Newbie Ghostbusters Question

So I've been thinking about tackling this one, but I've no idea about the scope of the project.

I'm willing to settle on 'close enough' for some of the kit like boots, belts etc, but brass tacks, what can I expect to pay for items like a decent light and sound proton pack, trap, and PKE with light sound and motion? Any other advice or things to watch out for as I set off on this project?

Many thanks,
David

I would do a good search of the site and take some good notes. There's also the GB site that has endless information. You also might find some good price ranges in searching old posts in the junkyard or PMing fellow propsters.

I wish you luck , I would like to have a trap, backpack etc , but need to make them and this IS the place to learn how to do it.

I'm having a hard time getting a handle on the value of this stuff...proton packs seem to go from anywhere between $500-$2000, for instance.

For pack info check out this thread on GBFans: http://www.gbfans.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=13494

Like any costume you can spend $100 and wear a rubies or spend $100 on just boots. For an average uniform (flightsuit, boots, belt, elbowpads, patches, keyfobs) figure $200-$300 depending on what you go with. Mid-range pack with lights built yourself from kit parts figure about $500-$700, add $100-200 for sound.

As usual prices shift depending on real vs. resin parts, shipping, availability, what tools you already own and what experience you have. With GB props it's the little things that wind up killing you, $30 for thrower labels and $20 for split loom adds up fast.

Traps are fairly easy to build yourself, I made mine for under $50, kits are available for about $100 with light and motor kits available for about $150 IIRC.

Movie PKEs are one of the major elusive props in the GB community. If you're able to find the kit expect to pay upwards of $400-$500 for everything. You can get just a shell for about $100 or buy an actual shoe polisher and mod it yourself (no lights, sound or motion) for about $50.

check out "ghostbusterfans.com" that site has all the info you would ever need.

fiberglass kits to resin kits, huge price difference as well as ability level to assemble said packs...

You probably mean GBFans.com. They've got more GB specific prop information there than I can possibly hope to ever remember.

A good ballpark estimate on a 'kit' proton pack, fiberglass shell, greeblies, light kits etc., you'll probably be looking at somewhere around $1500, depending on your quantity of real and replica metal parts vs. resin parts, and the like. High end packs with all real parts can run over $2000 very quickly, those little accurate details add up very fast.

Traps are quite a bit simpler, I haven't really seen much in the way of trap stuff for sale lately, but most everything except the correct knobs are still rather available. I don't think anyone has ever actually tracked down the proper knobs used on the hero traps. There's resin knobs around though, cast off 'close' knobs, so for the most part, it's not a tough prop to put together.
