Hi, everyone.

I am new to this forum and I find it extremely fascinating to read

I am new to movie props an replicas

I am new to receiving my very first replica made of resin which needs painting

I understand it has to be washed a few times, sanded lightly to remove any flaws, etc., etc.

Now my questions: (I will be using spray cans)

Should a primer be used and if so, what is recommend?

For the finish, I will use a metallic gold. Which brand is recommend for a beginner?

Beaker probably covered it with his link, but I will type a response because it makes it sound like I am working. Yeah, sure I am...

A good soap and warm water washing is always good for a piece which may have residual release agent on it. I light sanding with 320 wet/Dry sand paper, and a good coat of primer to make the paint stick.

I like High-Build primer , as it fills in the pin holes. Remember: the paint is only as good as the prep.

It would help if we knew what it was, who made it, etc...

They are the scaled replicas of the Ark Angels from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Who made them, I don't know but I could probably find out.

Why I asked who is because sometimes a particular builder makes items in a certain/consistent way.

For example,

Just for the record, the only mold release I use is talcum-based baby powder. That way there's nothing on the resin that could cause any problems when it's time to either prime or paint (I also wear gloves when handling the castings to avoid any natural oils that may transfer from my fingers).

That's just how Shawn Morgan does it, other makers may use other methods.

If you don't know how the replica maker works, use clutch's method to be safe:

Just make sure that before you paint, wash the kit with some dishwashing liquid to remove any dust/oils/mold release.
