Here's some shots and praise of the Cross Of Coronado I received from Brenton. This is certainly the finest replica of the Cross of Coronado I have seen to date. Right out of the box, it was "the" Cross of Coronado. I certainly could have left it "as is," but I wanted to give it more of an "antique" or "aged look" one might expect from an antiquity of this nature. As you can see in the following pics, Brenton captured the details, shape, size and design of this piece perfectly.

After the initial "visual shock" (which everyone seems to experience when first seeing the Cross, ) the next surprise is the weight. Both the Cross and the sturdy chain have a heft to them that screams authentic and historic.

Though the finer, rope chain did not originally come with my Cross, Brenton recently sent one out to me which I have since "weaved' into the chain. The extra chain, which "marries" the two chains into one, is one of those little additions that add a lot to the look and uniqueness of this piece.

Since the Cross comes very shiny, in Antique Gold plating, I worked with it to give the piece a more aged appearance. Though the passing of a couple hundred years might naturally bring the finish of this piece to a nice patina, I wanted to be around to enjoy the aged look myself!

Here's a shot of back of the Cross, showing the darker areas I added in the recessed letters and designs.

Here's another, showing the effects that the years of handling and the elements have had on this treasure.

One aspect that Brenton "nailed" is the proper thickess (or I should say "thinness") of the Cross itself. Spot on.

If you have the opportunity and means to acquire one of these, I highly recommend them. However, you can't have mine...This one belongs in a museum!!! Namely, my own!!!

Thanks, Brenton, for bringing this awesome prop replica to the fans!

Thank you, Darth Brass and Brenton!

I did a lot of research before trying anything as I didn't want to screw this piece up! Since I was already familiar with metal oxidizers for use with Brass, I searched for a similar item to use on gold. I had no luck finding any, so I went back to the drawing board.

Using "Blackened Bronze Metallic Surfacer" ( a brownish paint product used in a three step antiqueing process) I gave the entire Cross and larger chain a "wash" with this paint. I liked the effect it had in the grooves, recessed areas and lettering but the large surfaces looked too dark, so I ended up using steel wool to remove the paint, while leaving it in the recesses, grooves and lettering.

This left the Cross very shiny again, overall, so I laid on a few spray coats of matte finish clear laquer, which dulled the finish.

Finally, after receiving the smaller rope chain form Brenton, (Thanks!) I treated the small chain with brass oxidizer which slightly tarnished it and gave it a more yellowish hue which ties it in nicely with the larger chain.

Mark (KramStarr) has commented on another forum that he has weathered his Cross, as well. I am eagerly awaiting pics as Mark is a master prop maker and the results promise to be fantastic!

Brenton, thanks again for this wonderful prop! IMHO, you retired the jersey on this one!

Hellboy - Thanks for the cool review- I have one myself - The cross is unbelievable.

Um.... has anyone ever told you that you look like John Locke? Just sayin' that last pic... it's an incredible likeness.

Michael mate --

As I mentioned on COW, yours is a wonderful interpretation of this gorgeous prop. Sorry I have'nt had a chance to grab some pix of my own version (a little hectic here) but I will endeavour to get something done and shared soonest…

BTW, many thanks for your kind words regarding my modest skills but although I have made a good number of props in my time, I can't claim to be a master prop builder.. Just a dude with a paint brush :lol

Thanks for sharing my friend and thanks to Brenton once again for giving us all a simply perfect piece of art!

Regards

MARK

Glad you liked the review, Thomas!

Hi Mark! I know that you never claimed to be a Master...that's the title I gave you and I stand by it!:thumbsup

Thanks for dropping in again and I look forward to your post!

Since Michael was kind enough to share his fantastic interpretation of RelicMaker's Cross of Coronado, I thought I would also bang my tuppence-worth in..

As Michael said, this is a gorgeous prop and I had to think long and hard before I started because Brenton's work is SO good, the act of ageing the Cross could be considered sacrilegious.. In the end I felt what makes the Cross so appealing (to me at any rate) is the fact that its a relic so I decided to dull it down and work in a bit of grime so that it looked more the part.

One strange thing did worry me though and that was the amount of detail I could see in the blue inlay around the pearls. Not that this is wrong, its just that I felt - while looking at the movie - that the extremities of the Cross tended to look more gold as they reflected the light thus flattening out the detail substantially. So, aside from making it look older, I was also keen to see if I could give the impression of less detail in those areas while still retaining the screen accurate tooling.

I used acrylic paint for all the ageing: Cadmium Yellow Medium, Naphol Red Light and Black for the grime then, for the dulling down, I used Rich Gold acrylic and a touch of Burnished Copper acrylic to add a little kick of red in places.

MR_Cross006.jpg

I first dulled down the gold surfaces using the acrylic Gold paint and after it was dry, I carefully rubbed away some of the paint in a few areas - especially on the ****** figure legs and torso - to expose the bright gold plating. I used the gold acrylic as a semi-translucent wash around the pearls which left a sheen of gold when viewed from one angle but you can clearly see the blue through the gold wash when viewing the Cross from other angles. This solved my dilemma of the (sometimes) unwanted extra blue detail in those areas.

MR_Cross007.jpg

Using a mixture of the red, yellow and black I started with a light wash in the crevasses and the ridges slowly building up thicker layers - especially under the figure where dirt is more likely to have gathered. Like Michael I also used the wash to detail the writing at the back. In addition to this, I added light brush strokes of the copper in places so the Cross has some of the tarnishing seen in the Archives book (this is not strictly accurate as far as gold goes but I felt that limited use of the copper added character AND it conformed to the original prop as seen in the publication).

The lighting in this picture shows how well the dulling down worked

MR_Cross002.jpg

This picture shows how when viewed from certain angles, the blue detail around the pearls is transformed into a semi transparent gold

Once again I would like to Brenton for making this magnificent piece of art available.

Kind regards

MARK

Hi Mark!

As expected, your aging process made your cross look magnificent! Great pics, as well!!!

hi all. i recenyl acquired relicmakers CoC and wanted some advice on weaving the small chain in the larger chains. any advice on the proper method or technique? weave through each loop or every other loop? I looked at several pictures to get some reference, but thought I would ask as well. thanks!

this is the best picture i have found for reference in this thread. any thoughts on a different weave pattern. i only want to do this once.... 011-10.jpg

This is a great pic and once you get started it's pretty easy and really makes a huge difference.

Lets hope down the road someone needs to sell one or Mr. Relicmaker does another run so I can replace it,...again.

BTW PM inbound Brenton
