New Member - Predator (p1) 3d Animated Project!

Thanks so much for the kind words everyone!


I've started some preliminary diffuse and normal bump baking so that I can incorporate my textures into 3ds MAX. Still lots to do, but I wanted to give an update:

This is just a beauty pass, no compositing or complex shader nodes yet. He's already rigged. The armor from the waist down still needs a lot of work. Let me know what you think! :)

Lots more to do! But he's getting better :) This footage is not rendered by the way, it's the real-time viewport in 3ds MAX. So any materials that seem a bit muffled or plain are not being textured and displayed in the way that they will in the final/rendered footage. I'll do another fancy render once he has a bit more to show.

I completely modeled his gauntlets, it's hard to tell from this render but they have a ton of small detail (this will show up better in an actual render as opposed to a screen/viewport grab). I also have to redo his facial rigging, sadly my MAX file with his facial bone/rig system got corrupted :( Not a big deal, but I have to redo it. Hence the plain facial expression throughout this video :p

Here's another update! I know these are super short, but I wanted to share the progress. The animation is the same segment as what I uploaded last time, except now there is added facial animation, and the dreds and arm straps are animated/simulated. This footage is not rendered by the way, it's the real-time viewport in 3ds MAX.

hi again ralph, i havent been actve for some time now and i come back and see this.

first thought: ...wow, perfect classic predator

the rag/leather he wears round the waist is more predator 2 though and that is brilliant if your pleasd with it (you should be its epic!) but if you wanted a more classical design you could use the guide i use for mi doodles

@beserker_elite: Thanks for pointing that out :) To be honest with you, everything from the waist down hasn't been finished. I'll definitely adjust the loin cloth to the reference your provided :)

It's been a very long time since I updated this thread, so here goes! :)

Here's a very rough, early stage test of my Predator model in Unity using the Mecanim parkour animations, environment and Mecanim system. I plan on making an indie Pred game. It'd be great to get some community support for this, but ever since Concrete Jungle, I've wanted another game that is focused on the Predator.

It seems like mobile devices have a new game, but it's another entry in the AvP series. I'd like to make one where you can customize your own Pred, and travel from planet to planet to do some hunting. It would also have co-op. This would be for next gen systems btw... I might contact FOX and start a Kickstarter soon.

In the mean time, here's a quick video. He isn't textured, other than the odd normal map here and there. He also is missing his cloth parts (since those will be dynamic). I also haven't set up any dynamics for the dreds yet.

Lastly, the animations look very funny because it is currently set up using the default Mecanim animations that came with the project. They're definitely not meant for the Pred.

Once I get Unity Pro (hopefully soon), I'll be swapping those out for my own Plus, I'll be able to do more fancy visual things (animation blending, light baking, render effects, etc.).

Again, it's just a test, but it's promising! More soon!

Wow, that takes allot of work. I almost died laughing at the first flip, wasn't expecting that. Keep up the amazing work, I agree we need another legit pred focused game. I think something with more free play like that would be more fun compared to the constant missions.

Thanks Henry! And yes, the Pred looks pretty ridiculous with the regular animation set. But now that he's in Unity, rigged up and incorporated into the Mecanim system, making new animations will be a breeze.

I am thinking of putting together a little "proof of concept" level that is set up as a sandbox. Still debating whether to use a jungle or the Predator's home planet. We shall see. But I definitely am serious about getting a cool Pred game going.
 
The detail you have put into it already, could be played as is. I'm not the biggest gamer but just from what you're saying, I'm pretty much sold on it. This may be a bit of a crazy suggestion, but a removable bio mask during game play would be awesome.

If you plan on going through with a full on game... You have my support. We really need to have a stand alone Pred game, you are right.

 Hi dude, your stuff is inspirational! I remember seeing your mime animation ages ago. And now seeing your recent work it is mind blowing! Would you mind giving some advice to a new zbrusher? My main gripe is how do you do the facial spikes and the dreads?

I usually make the dreads and facial spikes by poly-modeling them in MAX and then importing them into Zbrush. All of mine, so far, are essentially extruded cyllinders that get smaller towards the end :)
