New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

The CIN special and trailer are leaving me a little flat. Looks like Doc Who might be getting ready to jump the shark! Not crazy about the direction it is taking. If we wind up with the Doctor going into another..."Whaaaaaa I miss Rose!" type of crap, I'm done!

I liked it, but, like you, I hope The Doctor isn't going to spend the entire episode moping over Amy. I'm hoping that the moping ends right away.

Because Tennant spent two seasons moping over Rose (actually, longer than she was companion). Not only was it REALLY annoying, it was also unfair to both Donna and Martha (REALLY unfair to Martha - she could have been a GREAT companion if not for her crush and the moping over Rose).

I can take the moping for the first quarter of the episode, but then it's time to move on and move past Amy. For good. No more of this "I'm so sad Amy isn't here" or "Amy would know what to say/do".

Speaking of... I loved Amy (and Rory) as a companion, but they need to stay gone. They can never come back - not only would it ruin/cheapen their goodbye, but it would cheapen the very characters themselves.

Basically, everytime I even hear the name "Rose" I want to puke now. Her ending in Doomsday should have been the last we ever see of her and, the moping in Runaway Bride should have been the last we heard of her - it's one of the reasons I'm glad Tennant is gone, he never moved past Rose.

With Matt Smith, it seems like we were FINALLY past all of that - and we'll see now how he moves to a new companion. Obviously there's going to be some of that, but if they can contain it to the Christmas special and, basically, make a fresh start with the new companion, then I will be REALLY happy.
 
I actually don't mind it. Having these events have serious consequences for the characters makes it far more interesting. Star-Trek style resets really bug me. Genre programming these days really can't do that kind of thing anymore. Having the Doctor get over it in 30 minutes would just make him far to cavalier and care-free to me.

If my mother-in-law/best-friend (yikes) were to die, i'd take a while to get over it.
 
That also reminds me... Martha had the best departure for the new series companions.

First - there wasn't a "no going back" departure (she wasn't trapped in a parallel universe, didn't have some meta-crisis, and wasn't zapped back in time by angels) - Martha's later cameos were okay because the way she departed (on fairly good terms, still in one piece) was clean.

Second - The Doctor didn't mope about after Martha. Her departure was mentioned twice in the "transition" episode, but Donna's episodes belonged to Donna and she didn't have to spend any time "measuring up" to Martha.

Third - Of all the (modern) companions, her post-companion role was the most believable and least annoying.

Fourth - Because of the way she departed, return appearances didn't "compete" with the new companion.

Maybe, but the magic of TV is that they can say "The Doctor has been morning Amy for 10 years now" in the opening scene, then show the point where he's finally over her. We don't have to see it.

But the majority of the audience these days wants there to be repercussions. It's not to everyone's taste but that's what people want.

As long as these relationships don't bleed over into the next regeneration, i'm okay with these tragedies ****ing up the Doctor for large portions of his tenure. :lol

1. How do you know that? I'm not saying it's not true, but I'd like to see the evidence on that one.

2. There's a difference between "repercussions" and "mopey/emo". There's other ways to show repercussions.

3. The mopey/emo personality isn't really Matt Smith's Doctor (at least not for an extended period of time). Likely all he needs is a good adventure hook and a new companion - something to distract him.

4. Personally, I don't watch Doctor Who for drama - if I want drama I'll tune to the WB. I watch Doctor Who for "fun adventures through space and time". Obviously there's going to be drama along the way, but let's not blow it up to soap opera levels.

Well, first off, Tennant never got past her because that's how the character was written. But that's kinda how grief works. Sometimes it takes a while to move past it. I dated a young lady who had been widowed for about 4 years. Part of the reason it didn't work out is because she still hadn't gotten past him. Personally, I appreciate this kind of thing because it's much better than "Aw man... my beloved companion got sucked into a black hole never to be seen again.... WELP! off to see the universe!" You're essentially griping because he genuinely cared about someone and let it show.
 
I'm with TheDoctor on this one. Please not too much mopey Smith, it's just a pain to watch.

Also, Amy & Rory need to stay gone. Forever. Rose should have too.

Please don't mention that mother-in-law thing... Still bugs the hell out of me! :lol

To be fair they never had that connection. Never once did he or she act like they were in-laws. Their relationship was so much stronger when limited to "she was the girl who waited".

Was at a Q&A with him in August and he said that he wanted to but as of then there was nothing planned. I'm not optimistic although I'd be for it. :)

Really though I'd like a bunch of classic folks back for an appearance. :thumbsup
