New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

The only way they could really achieve that though, wold be to really kill off ol' Thete, and I just don't see it happening...ever really.

It's possible they could...and then bring him back to life somehow at the beginning of the next season. The Master's pulled it off so many times even he's lost count. Mind you, that's cheating. Dead should be dead but then with time travel and a multiverse of possibilities...

It is standard operating procedure here at the RPF to hate 75% of everything and loathe the other 25%...yet still covet all the toys they get to play with. It's in the by-laws you know.

Matt Smith & Stephen Moffat's incarnation of Doctor Who would pass muster as a 'meh' time-killer if it weren't for the fact that I loved the show so much before.

The cyber mat was cool, and the increasingly unlikeable Doctor's speech to the baby was surprsingly resonant, the rest was just.....*sigh* :(

To me Matt Smith is doing great as the Doctor it's the scripts that are not doing it for me. They don't seem to be able to find a rhythm this season at all and it looks like there's been some budget crunching going on since episode one. There have been some great moments but not much of a cohesive feel to the season.

I think Closing Time would have been a stronger episode without the Cybermen but again that seems like belt tightening going on behind the scenes. Cheaper to reuse an existing baddy than to make a new one from scratch.

I thought it was good. Not great but not the worst. I'm confused on where we are in the timeline though as far as the Doctor. He's suppose to be 1100 at the lake and I thought he was still the 900ish version. Does he wear the cowboy hat for another 200 years next episode, or what? I think they showed way too many details in the next ep preview especially River in the suit which makes me think she will be pulled out of it at the last minute. It's feeling a bit rushed.

Nah, the 200 years have elapsed at the beginning of Closing Time. He's leaving Craigs place to deliver the notes.

Petrichor from Wikipedia

Petrichor (pronounced /ˈpɛtrɨkər/; from Greek petra "stone" + ichor the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology) is the name of the scent of rain on dry earth.
The term was coined in 1964 by two Australian researchers, Bear and Thomas, for an article in the journal Nature.[1] In the article, the authors describe how the smell derives from an oil exuded by certain plants during dry periods, whereupon it is absorbed by clay-based soils and rocks. During rain, the oil is released into the air along with another compound, geosmin, producing the distinctive scent.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrichor#cite_note-Bear1965-1

The word was featured in the Doctor Who episode "The Doctor's Wife", Written by: Neil Gaiman, as part of a telepathic password to enter one of the TARDIS's old control rooms. To use it, Amy Pond had to imagine the smell of dust after rain.

In "Closing Time", Written by: Gareth Roberts, Amy is seen on an advertisement for a perfume with the same name, it shows a picture of her face and features a bottle of perfume and the phrase: "Petrichor - For the girl who's tired of waiting".

Well we know Smith is in the 7th season so they have something figured out :lol:lol:lol.

They could theoretically kill the actual Doctor and go back and resurrect him a a flesh. That would be a bit weird but would work. They already laid the ground work for that sort of thing in the end of that episode. The Sonic just dissolved them, that does not mean they could not have grown back or whatever (they were living unlike the kind that Amy was that was just a projection).

I agree with Birdie, if it weren't for how good the show used to be, I might not even be watching any more. This season has had some good moments, it even had one whole good episode (The Doctor's Wife), but the rest has gone from mediocre to complete crap. Moffat's finale for S5 was poorly delivered and didn't make a whole lot of sense, so I don't have any hope for next week's episode. All I'm hoping for now is that he doesn't drive the show into the ground (however many bad seasons that would take) and get it cancelled again.

Well for whatever reason we're not getting any Doctor Who next year. Maybe BBC is reconsidering letting Moffat continue to kill the Golden TARDIS.

I just have to say that Saturdays episode was about the worst thing I'd ever seen. Theres been a lot of tosh and rubbish this season but this beat all comers by about at least a mile and a half. I had high hopes the baby was at least going to be an evil cyber baby at one point but no it just sat around looking as bemused by Smiths performance as was I. Tenant got on my nerves towards the end with his endless monologing but this level of hyper activity chatter was used solely to disguise just how utterly bad this story was. He needs to " calm down dear " or stop doing coke, and I 'm not talking the pepsi challenge here.
As for the cybermen, killed by "love"?!!!! It was like hearing the Alien in your tummy could be burped out with stomach powders and a pat on the back!! Why the hell even bother having them in. Well,if they haven't learnt yet that they should at least beat their immortal enemy to death (or regeneration) on sight rather than let him run around like a scarecrow on speed then perhaps an overload of sheer frustration should kill them anyway.
Why build up this death and let Smith say hes in for another season? Whats the point? Interestingly Alex Kingstons River Song story may be the one thats ending as she has signed up for a major role in "Upstairs , Downstairs" from October and I cannot see that giving her much time to film in Cardiff. As she is about the only reason I can find to watch the series I will miss her terribly if she goes.

I was also pretty dissappointed by saturdays episode, the Cybermen were once one of my favourite enemies but it seems nowadays they never pose any serious threat whatsoever, the only thing I wished had happened was that Craig was fully converted to a cybercontroller, I think it would've brought some badly needed tension to the episode which was pretty much 'carry on cyberman' I sincerely hope things pick up for the last episode, although I think the viewing public deserve more than having to watch, quite frankly, sub standard episodes just because a tiny element of the episode relates to an on going 'story arc' throughout the series?

Just to clear things up, the show has just been pushed back until the fall (Unless someone has a better source):

Doctor Who Season 7 Delayed: To Premiere Fall 2012 - Cosmic Book News

This episode brought back some of the fun of the show for me. Moffat takes every episode way too seriously. Was this the best? Not by a long shot, but it definitely wasn't the worst.

I feel like this is setting us up for some End of Time Part II-Level sadness in the next episode, so I guess we'll see.

Now, back to rampant speculation: I think that the eyepatch simply allows the wearer to perceive the aliens we call The Silence (Even though we know they are not one species) which is why we see River wearing it in the next episode. She needs to wear it to be able to infiltrate something or other.

...you fill in the details.

Well, with 2013 being the 50 year anniversary they best pull on their big boy pants and strap on their Stupomotron Nine Gabillion Thinking Helmets and make some Epic Grade Awesome happen.

Yeah Doctor Who is on hold because of the Olympics being held in the UK next year.

I call BS! Priorities BBC, priorities! :darnkids

Seconded. The 50th cannot go by with some kind of awesome something. I vote for a 'Living Docs' special....and if Chris won't play, CG his ass in there ANYWAY! :love

So apparently it's come as a complete surprise that this once every four years event is scheduled to occur in the UK this time around? That they just in the last couple days announced this? Oh wait, they've known for OVER SIX YEARS. They're pushing it back because the show has gone to ****. Hopefully they're taking a good long look at what they've done these last two seasons, and what happened the with the pre-Matt Smith seasons, and what they can do to go back to that quality.

Good long look?

Every episode is watched by over 25% of the entire tv audience and rates "excellent" on the AI Index.

I'm sure they'll question the **** out of what they're doing wrong.

I like that idea. Maybe the eyepatch just has an image of a Silent so the wearer is always looking at one, nothing too complicated.

Ratings are just fine, even better than Tennant's according to a few articles I've read. Ratings outside the UK are rising as well. The live figures aren't all that matter, with people using digital recorders and watching it for the first time later, or watching it on iTunes or other online licensed means.
