New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

Tell me, did anything actually important in any way happen in this last episode? I was so bored with it I just kept fast forwarding through it.

I'd say it was the worst season yet, but I saw some of Colin Baker's stuff.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

heh I'll watch it either today or tomorrow. I"m not expecting much myself consider how fan pandering it is in nature.

If it's any consolation, I think it's fine to criticize moffat. I wouldn't think he's ruining the show as such, but this concept of payoff is certainly starting to wear on people, myself included. The episode before last, my eyes practically glazed over. I can't take anymore sleight of hand stuff.

Really, on the whole can you blame anyone? After such engaging stuff such as Victory Of The Daleks and Vincent And The Doctor, we get a Pirates of the Caribbean episode, really?

I agree wholeheartedly, that moffat is not above digging into a bag of tricks just to wow and then fluster the audience. What about the paradox of the pandorica? The future doctor doesn't have to return to arizona to meet his fate in the future now?

On the whole, I just don't consider myself a fan anymore. Sure I watch and discuss, but I keep out my ten foot emotional pole with the new stuff. That doesn't mean that i'm a set in my ways old guard fan, it's just that where the old stuff could have been slow and over cautious in it's approach wheres I find the new stuff to be someone's personal playground.

I personally think there needs to be more of a middle ground in the tone and style of the writing. The show isn't sustainable as is IMO anyway..

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

So after everyone complaining that there was too much going on in the opening episodes, now we're complaining that there wasn't enough happening in this one? Great work RPF! :lol

After the frenetic pace of the first episodes, this one was a much needed pause to breath. It was a fun, easy-to-follow romp with pirates and a couple of small hints at the series arc. I liked it a lot.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

Since 5 years ago i've been wanting a nice weekly story that wraps itself up nicely without any sensationalism. :lol

the only reason i'm dissing the pirates episode is because it's fan pandering. I'd really hate to see DW slip into the charmed or buffy thing and start doing fan service episodes.

Can you please explain how this episode "panders" to the fans more than any other episode? I mean, should ANY show be made for people that DON'T like it?

Quick appearance from eyepatch lady and more fretting over the state of Amy's womb. It was pretty much the arc-free episode that everyone was clamoring for.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

Still had some nice thematic touches here and there throughout.
"When it's your time to go..."

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

I'm also not getting the 'fan pandering' thing?

Are we saying that Disney are the only ones allowed to do pirates now? Elucidate, man! :lol

I must admit I spent much time thinking about Amy's womb.

meaning that it's gimmicky and aimed at stroking the egos of the fan/geek community at large. I'm not saying doctor who can't do a pirate story, but to call it the curse of the black spot is obviously a tie in. I mean, why can't he then run into zombies, land in an anime world etc. :lol

the problem for me is that it's nothing other shows haven't done.. but other shows haven't been able to episodes like blink or victory of the daleks etc. I'd just like to see some moderation instead of the chaos that's ruled the series for the majority of the last 5 years or so.

Weren't you saying that you thought moffat's writing was ruining doctor who? :lol

The Doctor has run into zombies before, as well as pirates.

Were those episodes "tie ins" to...something? Was the season premiere a tie in to "They Live"? Was "Vincent and the Doctor" a tie in to my college Art History class? Is next weeks episode "The Doctor's Wife" a tie in to the Royal Wedding? I mean, it's the longest running sci fi in history! Others in the genre has borrowed from it, and then it's borrowed back. They've self plagiarized more times than anyone can count.

This ep was about two ships from separate universes both stuck in respective doldrums with an automatic doctor cleansing wounded through a rift which could potentially wipe out the Earth and that's "nothing other shows haven't done"???

It's funny you keep holding up "Victory of The Daleks" as an example of high storytelling seeing as it's an episode that is essentially resolved by the Doctor yelling "The secret ingredient is love!!!!" over and over until all is well.

There's a time traveler, a police box, and a girl who says "Doctor". Everything else is just icing on that cake.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

the curse of the black pearl, er spot.. *cough* tomato whatever.

I haven't seen it actually.. it's sitting on my DVR right now.. the name? the previews of amy walking around in pirate stuff? scruffy men on ships? oh please, lulzy tie in indeed.

oh thanks for ruining for me.. ungroan.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

i believe i mentioned offering to snog her crotch at one point..

Ruining? It would seem you owe me a favor. :)

oh noes, you've left me in rueful anticipation. I feel so conflicted. Will it be good or bad? Near or far.. space madness..:lol

my point anyway, is that moffat has been eluding to taking the show back to a story of the week sort of format without the huge overtures. many people, myself obviously included, are feeling that we're just being played with in that regard.

we just wish he'd hurry up and
