New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

.
RTD had had his day, but Moffatt, judging by his appearances on Confidential, seems obsessed with throwing in anything that looks 'cool', without giving much thought to telling a coherent (or in the case of much of Series Five, interesting) story.
You have pretty much summed up my biggest problem with Moffat so far. He will do something that seems kind of cool, even when it makes no sense at all.

Why is there an elevator programmed to have a creepy girl read you a poem before dropping you to your death? What the hell does it mean to be half smiler? Did someone get a smiler knocked up? Why do the fish that swim in the air look like plain old fish and not some wierd alien fish-like thing? Why can the angels look at themselves now? Why can Vincent Van Gough see the invisiable chicken monster? Why were those aliens that wanted to blow up the world in "The 11th Hour" just a giant eye?

All things done purely because of the cool imagery, but made zero sense at all.

Why can the angels look at themselves now?

This alone made my sister hate Season 5 and Matt Smith (even though the writing isn't his fault). Blink was her favorite episode of probably any TV series EVER, so she was hugely disappointed when the angels were brought back and utilized so horribly.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

And your comment, directed at me, wasn't passive aggressive? It seems to me we're doing the same thing. Neither of us likes the other calling them out. Shocker. I'm right there with you that Moffat isn't doing the best he could, the difference is that I don't like to argue about TV. (I love to argue, just not about that.) No matter what we say in our little corner of the internet, Moffat's not going to change his style or rewrite the rest of the series. Instead of complaining about what it isn't, why not just try to enjoy what you can from what we're given? I was personally a big fan of Davies arcs and his style in general, still don't get why some people weren't. Probably just because that's when I was introduced to the show. Moffat's Who is basically a completely different show. I can enjoy some bits of it, but it's not "Doctor Who: My favorite TV show" any more. But it's still sci-fi, it's still got running around on space ships and alien planets (well OK, maybe not alien planets), and it's still got a character called the Doctor who wears nifty costumes. I'll take what I can get.

Not calling you out about anything, except for your passive agressive attitude.

Yup. Not to mention the biggest one of all, that the Doctor can be resurrected from non-existence and completeley restore history because Amy Pond vagueley remembers him. Somehow.

I responded in kind, if you look back, I think you'll find you fired the first round.

You're on an internet discussion board, we're discussing a show we are passionate about, and I think I've pretty clearly stated exactly why I think Moffatt is potentially killing the show. You don't think that's worth talking about, in favour of adopting a 'hey it's sci-fi, doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense' approach?

Casual viewers want reasonable payoff over a reasonable period, or they tune out. No viewers other than hardcore fans, equal no show.

If you want to play in the 'don't like it, don't watch it' pool, go hit IMDB or whatever, it's shallower there.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

Yea, I love it when people talk down to me. Keep it coming. I'll step down in this argument because again, IDGAF. I tried to agree with you and make nice, but you're much more interested in calling me out on my difference of opinion. You once called me an online bully; glass houses buddy. Anyhow, have fun.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

Ok, I for one agree that we have a long way to go before we can say that there are too many loose ends to tie up, Moffatt is a clever writer and I for one am excited to see where it all goes, we are only 2 episodes in after all. Personally I don't think its the last we'll see of The Silence, after all weren't they meant to be responsible for the crack in time last season??

Edit: not a big gesture on my part, didn't read your last post carefully in my haste to snark back, my bad.

Look, you weighed snarkily about people 'complaining' about this series, that kind of comment rubs me up the wrong way both in tone and content. We're trying to have an adult discussion, no?

Your right that our opinions don't mean a jot to Moffat, but that really isn't the point, is it?

I just get real tired of the 'turn off your brain' jibes that predominate on lots of the TV/movie discussions on the RPF. It's the enemy of well thought out and entertaining shows AND discussion of said.

Moffat stated that they were the big bad for the whole series, which is split in two this time round. According to the Radio Times (UK listing mag)
the 'who is River' plot will be resolved in the first batch, which will also end in a big cliffhanger.

The second batch will air later in the summer.

Why are the nurses on New Earth cats? How does a man-cat have sex with a human and make kittens in Gridlock? Why does the TARDIS translate most alien languages into English but not Judoon? Why is Tom Baker's scarf an impractical length?

It's a sci-fi show about a police box that travels in space and time. At some point, you need to accept that improbable, unexplainable things happen.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

I love how the American-set eps are not doing well in the UK but it's the best ratings BBC America has ever had. All Your Doctors Are Belong to Us!

I don't think it is more popular because of the American sets. It has more to do with the growing popularity of the show here and the fact that we are getting to see the show at the same time as in the UK. In the past, we didn't get episodes in the US until the series was over in the UK. Who cares about ratings after the fact?

-Those are just aliens that happen to have cat-like faces. Can't tell you about the Judoon one.

But those are continuity errors that still make sense in thier own reality.

Mine are things that just have no logic at all behind them. And don't tell me "its a sci-fi show, wierd stuff happens" becuase that is the lamest cop-out ever. Every shows still has the obligation to make sense of the universe it created.

I just don't understand why it's perfectly reasonable to have aliens that look like cats, but having aliens that look like eyeballs is completely out of the question.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

Oh man, I LOVED the pirate episode. Perfectly brilliant explanation to the whole thing. Very Star Trek: Voyager. The space pirates scene at the end gave me goosebumps. Previews for the Doctor's Wife look great.

3 for 3.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

...and they were flying towards the Dog Star! That was great, when the rest of the crew sidled up.
