New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

I don't get it either, personally. Especially considering there hasn't been a Dalek story so far this season. I doubt they'd scrap 'em that fast. I figure they'll be around for one or two stories and then mutate again or something. Really, I think that they need a good story, rather than just a cameo at the end of one, for people to judge fairly whether it matters that they're multi-colored.

Exactly.
And Moffat's already stated that this series (6) would not have a Dalek episode. Maybe series 7 will, or maybe not. I think he knows the story needs to be worthy of including them. I think RTD went Dalek-crazy.

I don't get the hate. They're bigger and come in colors. What's the big deal? The main actor has changed 11 times.

I think that's a somewhat simplified description of the redesign. The Daleks have not been signicantlyoverhauled like that since their inception. RTD actually improved on the design by subtly adding armour and sturdier build quality.

The Moffat total overhaul makes them look like dayglow plastic toys with huge butts and some kind of retro collendar on their heads. Very menacing...

I think if you don't get the hate, you kinda don't get the Daleks. Can't remember if you are a classic Who fan or not? Certainly, in the UK, they have became part of our culture, easily equal to the Doctor himself, perhaps moreso, since, as you stated, he keeps changing.

They are utterley iconic, and in the UK there was a kind of collective national sigh of relief when 'Dalek' aired and Davies was seen to have retained the classic design.

I've seen far superior re-imaginings at cons. It's like Moffat wanted to make them absurd or ridiculous for his own ends. Certainly I've not noticed any other such jarring failiures of judgement in the art direction of the new regime.

I like the Tom Baker and Peter Davison series... but, yes, as an American I don't have the same view of Daleks as my British friends. Even as a boy I thought they were vaguely silly and certainly not monstrously threatening. It didn't help that I originally misheard their catchphrase as IN SEM I NATE!

I'm a fan of classic who, so I like to think I "get" the concept of the Daleks. I get why they're generally darker or drab colors (the 1960s non-canon films notwithstanding), and I personally prefer the design during the RTD years.

All I'm saying is that the change doesn't automatically make me HATE the new Daleks. It makes me a bit wary, yeah, but I'd rather see how it plays out in practice. If they can construct a good story around the new look, I'm in. If they can't, then yeah, dump 'em or revert 'em.

Now, all that said, let's not forget that there have been some wacky Dalek designs in the past even outside of the movies. The Dalek Emperor (both the regular one and the Davros one), as well as the Dalek Supreme have all been a bit different looking. And the Cult of Skaro thing was another foray into different designs.

I agree that none of them quite did what the movies did, which seems to have been resurrected by the TV series, but I don't think it necessarily bodes ill merely because they're brightly colored. I mean, nobody complained when the Silurians changed, and I thought their story was pretty good overall. (And man will they EVER get it straightened out with the humans?!)

Anyway, I think that, given how the fifth and sixth seasons have gone thus far, and given how his other stories during the RTD era went, I'm inclined to give Moffat the benefit of the doubt. I think he's a pretty good storyteller and, while he might be skewing a bit in favor of easier merchandising, I can just as easily see the story itself ending up being cool.

Wasn't moffat saying it was also time to backseat the daleks since they have nothing really to offer plot wise other than failure?

i've said it before and i'll say it again, I dont think the head writer and exec producer should be the same person.

that said, yea, I get the daleks. In fact, because of that I think I hate the episode with the last dalek more than I do the new colors, which I don't really care for either. Obviously, it was moffat's own "i can do what I want" thing (see my above point), but hey, as long as their blasting people to ions without discretion, I dont mind so much.

daleks with feelings.. feh.

Looking awesome! Glad to see its coming the end of August. For some reason, I had it in my head we would not see it until late September or October.

Yep, just a month out, which surprised me too, especially considering Torchwood will still be airing. But I'm ecstatic none the less that we'll get some answers sooner :)

I don't think this is a spoiler any more I'm just glad that we have finally figured out what / who River Song is and what her relationship with everyone is. I still want to know if they ever bring the Doctor Who clone back that was created a season or so ago the clone that was reborn after the Doctor left (end of Episode) it would be interesting to see her and River Song and the Doctor in one episode.
