New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

Then you'll really hate to know that I'm one of those freaks who thought RTDs writing was all rubbish and Moffat's reign represents a literary ascention.

That being said, based on your posts I can absolutetly understand why you believe the opposite.

There are few Tennant episodes you can put up against any of the Matt Smith episode and call the Tennant ones the worse of the two. "Love and Monsters" and "Fear Her" would be the only ones I can think offhand. Almost everything else has been vastly superior in every conceivable way than everything Matt Smith has been in.

And sorry, the ratings of the Matt Smith episodes have really begun to show that more people agree with me than you.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

I vote for keeping this thread active because Captain Bringdown and the Buzzkillers are playing a free show in the other one. All ages. And the line for the bathroom sucks.

Why blame Matt Smith? I think he's great. I blame Moffat for the flaws. Also though, I think The Doctor's Wife was better than most Tennant episodes, and I loved RTD's writing.

I'm not blaming Matt Smith himself, though I'm just really not liking him that much, but the writing after he took over in the role has been really losing quality as time goes on. It's just worse and worse.

"The Doctor's Wife" was good, granted, and I think stands up with the Tennant episodes, but better than most? No.

"Family of Blood" and "Human Nature"
"School Reunion"
"The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances"
"Dalek"
"Bad Wolf" and "Parting of Ways"
"Father's Day"
"Unquiet Dead"
"The Girl in the Fireplace"
"Impossible Planet" and "The Satan Pit"
"Blink"
"Utopia" "The Sound of Drums" "Last of the Time Lords"
"Silence in the Library" and "Forest of the Dead"

The above ones are just ones I can think off the top of my head that were brilliant and well written. Let's compare that to the really good Smith episodes.

"Vincent and the Doctor"
"The Doctor's Wife"
"The Pandorica Opens" and "The Big Bang"

Four out of 20 so far since Matt Smith took over. The writing isn't holding up and ratings are declining. How far do they need to fall before BBC decides we'll have to wait ANOTHER 15 years for another series??

Anyhow, great episode. This season has actually started to get pretty creepy. From the next episode trailer it looks like the Doctor doesn't have any problem with killing his clone, so maybe the real Doctor was in the space suit.

Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe the real Doctor gives the clone Doctor a chance to visit with Amy, Rory, and River out of compassion with the understanding that after that he had to go :lol:lol:lol.

He has not met River yet but who knows where the season will take him.

I watched the episode again last night and got the same vibe. He said something like he must have tried wine at some time in his life as if he could remember it but had not experienced it. There were a few other things in there like that.

One thing I am not sure we have had answered, Is this Doctor "Rivers" Doctor? I remeber her saying something about the fact that Tennets Doctor was not the one that she was married to (or whatever) but did they ever say that Smiths Doctor is?

Where are you getting your information? The BARB ratings aren't even in yet for the latest episode. The reported ratings are rising since episode 2, and overall this season averages 7.995 million UK viewers per episode. That's up 3.4% from last season. It's a front-runner. I'd say they call it a "nice little earner".

Let's quibble, shall we? There've only been 19, and we're adding in "The Lodger," because you're mad if you don't. So that's a 26% hit-rate that even you admit.

Looking at Tennant's first nineteen eps (because we have to compare apples to apples) only... four... on your list appear, giving them a bit better hit/miss ratio. And that's not even counting RTD should know his bit, having a whole series of Eccleston to practice. :)

Let's give the lads a bit to find their feet.

This isn't the first article I read, but shows how BBC is having to justify ratings dropping.

They had a whole season already, and continue to slip. The list of episodes I included were just the ones I recall off the top of my head. Looking back at the full list, there were only three episodes I remember feeling a little lacking in the first season with Eccleston. "Aliens of London", "World War 3" and "Boomtown" Theres a reason, they have the Slitheen, a poorly designed alien menace if nothing else for the constant fart jokes. That means there was a 76% hit ratio on the first season as far as I'm concerned.

Tennant's first season there were two really lousy episodes "Fear Her" and "Love and Monsters" which gives that series an 84% hit rate. That's up from first season.

This season for Smith there's been one good episode so far out of five. We're at a freaking 20% hit ratio.

In series 5, the only episode I really liked was Vincent and the Doctor. This season though, I've liked them all. The pirate episode was a little weak, but I still enjoyed it.

You're at a 20% hit ratio. Mileage varies. :cool The AI (Appreciation Index) is between 85 and 88 so far this year, which says the UK viewing audience, at least, likes it well enough. It clearly doesn't suit you personally, of course.

That's really the ONLY one you liked? C'mon, Eleventh Hour was awesome - probobly one of the BEST series openers. I really liked the whole series except for The Hungry Earth....still haven't been able to sit through that episode from start to finish...

Dont' Moffat write...

The Empty Child & The Doctor Dances
The Girl in the Fireplace
Blink
Silence in the Library & Forest of the Dead.

The Empty Child & the Doctor Dances - I think are the best from the Eccleston's period.

and the other are the best from Tennant's run.

Yes, he did.

So why has his writing gotten so poor? He's delivered **** since taking the lead role. He needs to go back to just writing episodes and let someone else handle the production.

He did write those, proving that he's a good writer, it just doesn't say anything about his overall storytelling ability. How Moffat and Gatiss created Sherlock after that steaming pile Victory of the Daleks (IMO the worst episode of Who ever, although I haven't seen any 6 or 7 yet) is completely beyond me.

Frosty: I didn't like Eleventh Hour much at all. That time lapse steadicam deal they tried didn't do it for me, or apparently anybody else either, because they didn't try it again. The pacing didn't feel right, Amy annoyed the crap out of me (although not as much as she would later) and Prisoner Zero being done with CGI instead of practical effects was a slap in the face to MFX, who have done some amazing work on the show and are now doing less and less thanks to "improvements" in CGI. I don't argue that it wasn't good compared to 9 and 10's intro episodes, but Rose and Xmas Invasion were complete garbage.

I have to agree with Risu and Kerr Avon. The big over all stories are ok but there is something missing that used to be there. It's the little things that matter the most sometimes.
