New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

Really? you didn't know the St. Johns Ambulance logo used to be on the Tardis during the 1st Doctors era?

That aside I get the idea that this season was originally written for Tennant since he didn't back out till...I do believe during the filming of the 2009 specials so I get the idea that this season was supposed to be for Tennant. It's kinda like when McCoy was working with the Colin Baker scripts for his first season and then the whole character changed. I am wondering if that will happen with 11.

To be honest I became a fan of the new series 5 years ago I just couldnt get into the older seasons for that I am sadly guilty. Rose is what got me hooked to begin with then David T then I became a new fan of Doctor Who I guess it was more hipper and tech heavy kinda like comparing TOS of Trek to say Voyager etc... Thank you for the history lesson I now have learned something new:)

I like the new Doctor and Amy, it's just I haven't really liked any of the episodes since he took over. The stories really haven't had the kick of the earlier ones for me personally.

Don't feel bad XD It can be a real culture shock going from the modern series to episodes nearly fifty years old. XD though I do recommend going back and watching the originals. I always found it highly fascinating to see where it all began.

Yeah, my initial thoughts on these things are "oh hell no" but Kylie turned out good

Kylie got her start as an actress, so that was a non-issue. Gaga would be pure stunt casting and I'm not keen. But if she shines then ok, fine, whatever.

Actually Billie Piper was pretty risky casting too...what is it with all the pop tarts on this show? :)

Girl in this week's upcoming ep looks awesome, btw.

Now as to why the St. John Ambulance Association sign was on the original TARDIS -- it's because it was on many of the original Police Boxes, to indicate that first-aid was available there as well as police services.

Now if only they'd get rid of that very visible wood grain, too. The originals were concrete. :D

Well, I don't recall seeing wooden doors on a police box but I'm sure it's possible. All the ones I've seen were pretty definitely built of concrete, it isn't something you can mistake for anything else when you take a close look.

Given that Hartnell's Doctor was running around 1960s Britain, you'd assume the TARDIS was attempting (imperfectly) to mimic what was most common at that time. Wooden ones were built for a short period and in the UK climate, it's a safe assumption very few would have survived into the Sixties...

I just started watching the first 2 serials over the last few days. Almost done with "The Daleks". So far I really can't get into it. The first serial bored me half to death. It all moves so slow. I'm definitely going to stick with it though as I know it'll get better over time. Plus I'd like to know as much as possible about The Doctor and his time line so I can enjoy the current seasons even more and get every little reference made on the show. Hopefully it just doesn't stay this slow for too long.

As for the St. Johns Ambulance sticker, I find it funny that those posters burned away in the recent episode but the sticker stayed there untouched lol.

The old runs of the series have their own appeal and charm, if you expect it to get close to the new series 'action' levels I believe you will be disappointed overall... The old series are really a night and day difference all around vs the 2005 reboot... For me, I have been a fan all my life so I love the old and new, but there are a lot of people that simply can't get into any of the older series at all...

Although once you hit the Tom Baker era you might start to feel more at home, but it's still not the same as the 2005 reboot...

Stick with it and enjoy though, you will get a very good grasp of the history and background of The Doctor...

Reading A Writers Tale at the moment, and it was pretty clear that Tennants departure was planned years in advance, although he did briefly consider changing his mind when Moffatt agreed to take the job for season 5. That said, you can't help having Doctor 10 in the writers subconsious until they've gotten used to Matt Smith.

I just caught up on the last two episodes. My sister warned me something big happened last week, I wasn't really expecting that at all though. I think he'll be back. But if his coming back means erasing the Davies era any further, then :thumbsdown to that.

Yea, I'm pretty sure Tennant had planned to leave before production on series 4 ended.

Gaga on Who could be awesome, or it might not be. I'd like to see it though.

Unbelievably excited about Torchwood coming back. I wasn't a very big fan of the show and didn't particularly care whether or not it came back until this new series started airing and I realized just how much I like Davies and that we'd never get Who in that style again. I like this series alright, but somewhere between the writing and Smith's portrayal of the Doctor it just doesn't measure up to Eccleston and Tennant for me. This latest episode was really great, but it still doesn't compare to my favorites from the last 4 series.

It gets better byt the time of the War Machines tough I think you'll find it more akin to the modern series by the last series of the 7th Doctors run XD

As for the "sticker" well...it's not a sticker, it's a part of the Tardis so it wouldn't burn off. ;-)

Well considering he was only on the show for three years and a few specials, saying it was planned years in advance is almost redundant, wouldn't you say? From his interviews I got the impression he wasn't decided until sometime around the Next Doctor episode and Moffat was already writing his new series prior to series 4 being filmed. My logic there being that Moffat was already setting up for his new series run when he wrote the Silence in the Library episode. Therefore he would have already been writing the 5th series with Tennant in mind so the dialog would have been written to match. Same exact thing happened with Sylvester McCoy.

I truly miss David T as the Doctor as this new Doctor seems just a tad off. This season is just like series 1 new Doctor, Companion and Tardis. I am still trying to figure out why they added the ambulance decal on the other door. I also miss the carry over actors from one season to the next. Last nights episode was great but had a hard time with the Doctor calling Vincent Van Gogh as Gof I thought it was Go.

All the Doctors when they start seem a tad off at first, but then they settle in. Just have to get used to him that's all. I know Tennant is popular and missed greatly , but so was Tom Baker and he played him for seven years. I remember when Davidson took over I wasn't too sure of him myself. He soon became a favorite. After years of Baker it was like a breath of fresh air. The series needs that once in a while , so it doesn't become stale.

Aside from the first ep of this season, I find nothing Tennant-ish about this season at all. The first ep was a brilliant send off/transition ep from tennant.

If my memory serves me correctly, DW announced Tennant's departure in Q3 of 2008.

I have to admit, I've been mostly disappointed with the stories. I wasn't expecting the greatness of "blink" every week, but I was hoping for more than what we've gotten so far. Maybe Moffatt's just letting the new Doctor get settled, and letting the audience get settled into the new series and all the changes before he wallops us with a mind blowing story.

Overall, I think it's watchable, but I don't love it near as much as the past 2 doctors/companions and their adventures.

Are you serious about Gaga if that did happen I would truly tune out. IMHO Susan Boyle would be great in an opera setting

Bumperoo

I really liked this "low-tech" episode. The only thing I thought was odd was how the doctor was great at Soccer. I know Matt Smith used to play but it just seemed odd.

This episode was actually really awesome. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I loved that the upstairs
was another TARDIS
that was just really creepy. I hope that comes up in either the next 2 episodes or as the big story arc next season. The design of it itself was really cool.

Is the black Tardis a precursor to the Dark Doctor that we saw in the previous episode?
Kinda like the crack is opening a bizzaro world?
