New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

i still dont get why they had to "defeat" the sun.

from what i gathered, he eats "stories" but doesnt take them away from the host, as the doctor still knows everything. also what does a little girl have to offer?

all they did was take a source of light away from a inhabited zone.
 
I know I'm probably WAAAY off on this, but I couldn't help but think that this last half of Series 7 is all going to be centered around the Doctor's past. We have 2 episodes with the GI as the nemesis. We know there are Ice Warriors, & Cybermen in the near future. We're getting Ten, Rose, Zygons, & possibly a Dalek in the 50th.

For me though, last nights episode seemed like there was a lot buried right beneath the surface. We have the reference to Susan right off the bat, & then the entire episode has a 'bad guy' that is basically considered a god, that they refer to as Grandfather. He feeds on the memories & stories, & then the Doctor believes that all we are is made up of our memories & experiences.

It's hard to put exactly what I was thinking into a coherent post, so I'll just leave it at this-

It seem s like there were a lot of parallels between the Doctor & Grandfather, like how he is so old & jaded to the universe, the only way he really has joy is by experiencing the universe through the new experiences of his companions. They both need the experiences, & in a way, feed on them. The Doctor has expressed his joy when both Clara & Amy joined him, because of the new eyes in which he could see the universe, & Grandfather needed 'pure' or new stories or else he'd grow violent & consume everything. Since Who came back, it's been hammered into our heads that the Doctor can not be left alone or else bad things happen.

I gathered that while it was asleep, that was true. Once it awoke, it no longer played nicely and was going to literally devour the stories instead of figuratively devour them as it did while asleep.

I know, I know, it's just the title page.. but as soon as I saw they were holding paper, I was all "WHAT IS IT?!?!?!"

I always got the impression that Smith was a lot taller than Tennant.. is he standing on a box or something?

Basically if something seems impossible to you it is only because it is something out of your frame of reference. The more science learns of other planetary systems the more they're realizing how weird and unique every one of them is. Add to that technology that makes the impossible possible. You can accurately describe a smart phone to someone in 1950's sci-fi speak as a device which links you into a knowledge base spanning all available human information as well as allows you to communicate instantly to anyone with a similar device.

This is also a fantastic excuse for any science fiction writer to be as lazy as they want to be.

Fan: "...but you need a spacesuit to be in space!"
Writer: "Future Science!"

In the end, it academic what we categorize it (*cough*fantesy*cough*), the important thing is that we're being entertained. I can totally understand the complaint that Doctor Who doesn't make more of an effort to stay within the realm of plausible science - especially if it "takes you out of the show".

Moffet is a LOT more about Fantasy than Science Fiction, but you'd have a hard time convincing me that the show was EVER more about Science than Fantasy - it's just that older series had the advantage of less people caring about the fact that REAL Science Fiction was more than monsters and ray guns.

I respectfully disagree. Amy had some great growth - specifically growing into Rory being her knight over The Doctor, and growing into being a parent. Amy also learned to "settle down" (if you remember, earlier in the series the thought terrified her - Rory wasn't "enough" - by the time their story ended, Rory was more than enough and living out a quiet life with Rory was preferred over living alone or adventure with The Doctor.

Basically, Amy starts off as a little girl and has to "grow up" - something that goes beyond even The Doctor.

I see where you're coming from, and maybe it's just me, or that fact that she was made so integral to the happenings without any real payoff...then had the gaul to try to make Rory feel guilty for making her wait 40+ years for him, when he waited thousands of years for her.

I'm probably just projecting at this point. Haha

I get the whole fast-paced, loose-with-science, kids-and-kidults appeal of the show; it's usually fun, I enjoy it overall and try not to ask too much of it. But there are occasional episodes that I wish just hadn't happened and this was one of them.

Aside from the sheer rampant silliness of the whole thing there wasn't really any solid hook to hold it all together; it was just a lot of flimflam thrown at the audience in the hope that if the barrage was fast enough people wouldn't notice.

For starters, the Halloween pumpkin face on the ill-defined living parasite sun thing wasn't exactly immortal TV. Meh.
 
Regardless of how silly any of the "science fantasy" was, I loved the Doctor's utter failure to intimidate the parasite.

All of this mystery surrounding his true identity and all of the things he's done in his life and the parasite's reaction?

"Pfffft".

Though I did feel that it kiiiind of neutered this whole mystery behind the Doctor.
 
Wait. During his confrontation with the parasite, the Doctor says something along the lines of;

"i've walked in universes the physics of which were devized by a mad man"

That puts our "science-fiction" versus "science-fantasy" argument to rest. The Moff's not so subtle commentary on the matter? :)

The read I had on it was that it didn't actually feast on Eleven, it was going to and Eleven's rant scared it off. Clara's leaf was destroyed, so if it had fed on Eleven or the girl it wouldn't have been pretty I expect.

There was a line earlier that the girl had the collected knowledge of her people, all their stories. That's a big meal for Grandfather.

I was trying to go back in my memory and think if he was citing something from an actual episode here. The closest comparison I could think of was when he was in the Matrix in Deadly Assassin which was being manipulated by the Master.
