New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

I'm not sure he completely knew where everything was. There were enough instances where he'd throw a switch and the TARDIS would go off kilter. And he keeps leaving the parking brake on. :lol

True, but it's more like futzing with Control Panel settings in Windows 7 vs. XP and getting a different desktop picture instead of changing the resolution like you meant to instead of "OMG! What is that glowing box sitting on the desk that changes it's image????"

No. No no no no. Nein. Non. Nei. Nu. Nej. Yok. NIET!

I just saw the latest prequel for the Christmas special.

Madame Vastra is just walking around infront of regular people, proudly announcing the fact that she's a member of a reptillian race that predates Humanity, is in a lesbian, cross-species relationship with her HOUSEMAID and has a butler who she fully admits is a genetic clone from another planet?!?!?!!?!

And what reaction does the inspector from Scotland yard give?

"Oh, my"

I could kind of excuse the CyberKing as it kiiiinda fell into that blackhole of human denial that a lot of people in movies seem to have when faced with some fantastical event that comes and goes in the blink of an eye. But this?!?!?

That's..so...STUPID!!!!!!!!!

Seeing as how this has been discussed at length a couple pages back, I'm just going to re-iterate this:
1) The final episode is almost always very different than the impression you get by watching the trailer and/or orphaned scenes.
2) It's a fantasy (or poorly written SciFi, depending on your view) meant for pure entertainment.
3) It's stupid, but there have been worse.
4) You're either going to watch it and end up loving it, watch it and end up hating it, or refuse to watch it - none of which make any difference at this point - hold the indignation for after viewing and it sucking.
5) Repeat to yourself: "It's just a show, I should really just relax!"

However, the prequel should have it's own internal logic outside of the main episode.

Saying it's fantasy is not really an excuse. You can have fantastical things like this but when they go against the universe's own internal logic it just jars against the rest of the show.

I don't know about worse. This is the first time i've really railed against something in new Who being "stupid".

And I know it's just a show, but again, when a show contradicts its own internal logic, it just pulls me right out of said show. Then it no longer IS a show. It's an example of bad writing for which there really isn't an excuse.

And putting my rant in context; I love almost everything about New Who from VOTD to 10 surviving that fall in TEOT. So when my internal warning system goes off, I know it's bad.

This concept of "the universe's internal logic" is a fallacy - everything on screen works as it does for the purposes of the story it's telling. Some TV shows are better at it then others, but ALL TV shows will break down sooner or later and Doctor Who is certainly no exception.

You want stupid? There's TONS of it.
Earth has a molten core, right? No? It's the Racknoss(sp)?
How about the Titanic crashing was supposed to destroy the planet, but all it did was wipe out London?
How about TOWING THE FREAKIN EARTH??????

Ok, you can make those kinds of observations, but those examples still don't pull you out of the story in the same way, if at all.

Molten core? Check out the debate on that one. It still works.

The Titanic killing all life. That only proves the Doctor was wrong.

Towing the Earth? Using a science thousands of years in advance of our own...I can still buy it.

But I KNOW what the public reaction to the Vastra household would be. I KNOW it would raise questions, bring investigations and cause a lot of public outcry and most likely a mob or two.

If Towing the Earth doesn't "pull you out of it" then I am at a loss for any further conversation. That was just about the stupidest thing I've EVER seen (worse, in my mind, than "Warp 10").

Edit: And if you can believe that, I have a bridge to sell you ;-)

Not sure I'd call it the stupidest thing I've ever seen but definitely right up there. Whole bunch of people who clearly have no idea what they're doing smiling at camera around the console to boot. It was a bit of a circle jerk for the companions... :unsure

Am I going to have to add Doctor Who to the list of shows I 'used' to watch?

And I found it interesting that Moffat has already come out and said.... Douglas Adams wrote this one! So, if the fans hate it......

I have a 13 year old daughter who watches the show with me. I don't want these issues in front of her. And it's not a matter if the lizard lady is gay or not, could not care less. I would not want her talking about sexual exploits if she were a straight lizard lady!

Doctor Who WAS a family show at one time, we could all gather and watch it together, without having to explain to our young children afterwards, what "that" meant!

Get back to roaming the galaxy, saving alien life, and less 'modern social pandering' please.

Adams once pitched an idea of "what if the Doctor retired?". Moffat decided that would be an interesting concept, he's not even slightly suggesting that Adams wrote the script though.
