New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

But in the new series, everyone knows that the timelords all died, even though, again, it all happened in the past. If that makes sense. *head explodes*

I would argue that only some do. The few times he's told people he's from Gallifrey they tend to get pretty scared.

Also, even if they know that they're all dead they haven't forgotten them. So theoretically the scanner should still have recognized him as the Doctor, maybe coming up with a "deceased". Afterall, it knew who Nefratiti was and by the time of this story she'd been dead for 2,000 years!

Any how, you're right. Doesn't make much sense. :lol

So we did a double feature of Asylum and Dinos last night. Couple of thoughts.

  • Wasn't Skaro destroyed? Didn't Moff say no more daleks for a while? Or did he mean after Asylum.
  • Dinos went down well at the viewing. I sort of got sucked into liking it for that reason. Personally, I'm missing RTD though.
  • Mark Williams was great casting, although all I could think about was The Fast Show.
  • Mark Gatiss had pitched Who to the BBC in the 90s. He didn't want the thing to be bogged down with continuity, so for instance, he suggested a scene were the Doctor and his companion go to Skaro, the daleks turn up and introduce themselves, and the Doctor says, "never heard of you". Thought of this at the end.

"No Daleks (for a while)" meant after the terrible reception the Paradigm Daleks got in 2010.
Throwing all the older styles that everyone loved into the episode was, I think, his way of saying sorry for messing with the design... Although the Paradigms we saw did have a repaint in darker-more metallic colours.

Now, of course, unless EVERY old style Dalek was in the Asylum, it means they can use any era designs in future stories. (Though I think they'll limit themselves to massed bronze with Paradigm commanders)

As for Skaro being destroyed.. there are a few options:
  1. Accept a novel as canon (and open up a canon of worms :lol ) and it was a decoy planet that got destroyed.
  2. "Destroyed" doesn't mean "planet go boom" just "surface in ruins"
  3. Anything is fair game after rebooting the universe with a TARDIS-powered Big Bang and a reality as remembered into being by Amy Pond.

Yeah, Skaro being back doesn't keep me up at night or anything, was just curious if I missed something. It's such a great name for a planet, be a shame to see it go!

One thing that bothered me about the Dino episode was the constant putting down of John Riddell (the hunter).

OF COURSE he wasn't in Amy's history texts, he wasn't a flippin' Monarch!

Tired of this show putting people down for being a product of their age. In his time a big game hunter was one of the paths that adventurers took to see something exotic. Leave the poor guy alone.

Not to mention the overbearing anti-gun sentiment (not specific to this episode, just in general). The Doctor from the classic series didn't mind the odd gun. ;)

He once wielded one of the baddest of them all.

Overall, anti-gun sentiment and DW go hand in hand though.

Ya, but it's pretty overbearing now. "Guns are bad!" "Oh, you need guns! How silly!"

Then an alien attacks and if the Doctor wasn't there they would NEED GUNS to survive. Just drives me nuts.

I miss Eccleston, he knew when force was required...

What says Solomon was human?

They didn't even make a slight effort to make him look otherwise. It's a fair assumption he was human unless told otherwise. Someone mentioned the Family of Blood being punished worse than anything else. Again, not human.

I'm not saying he's wrong or right to change this stance, but it IS a change in his moral code.

There are plenty of "aliens" that look human in the history of the series.

Not a big deal to me. As others have said he just left the guy to the fate he had already chosen for himself.

Maybe Tharl Robomen? I don't really think that was the intention, but like you say, it would be cool! :)
