New Davy Jones Costume for Disney Cruise 2014

Re: New Davy Jones Costume for Disney Cruise 2014 - Animatronic trials started

So heres the first trial of a generic tentacle .
Its being run off a battery drill. but I'll be sourcing servos / motors etc later - I just wanted to prove my thoughts out first.

This would be one of the "side" tentacles which would simply "slither" repetitively, so minimal controls required, but its not too shabby so far.

keep plugging away :D

This is awesome!

So ,......... I've started to sculpt the crab style leg.
I made a lifecast of my bent leg, then using a base of foam and plaster, created the main shell.
after a quick coat of acrylic paint to seal it, I covered it in oil based clay, then textured it.
Im just in the progress of sculpting a placing the barnacles and other sea life, then I'll make a mould from the master.

I made the last leg from latex covered EVA foam, but I'll be making a full fibreglass, or carbon fibre version for this version.

comments and tips welcome, cos it seems like everybody's steering clear of pirates these days lol :D:cry

Hmmm... If you sculpt the face tentacles with a slight curl to them it could add some bounce once you cast it.
Just like a rubber snake toy giggles around when you pick it up ( Not to that extreme though).
Another advantage to adding a bit of a curl would be the illusion of motion. Angled lines have a wider since of motion than straight line.

With the tentacles being straight I imagine they would just sway side to side.

i did that in the old mask, and it was ok but I used the same tentacles over and over. I also put some twists etc in them with acted like "springs" if that makes sense.
I'm doing the same in this one, but I'm making more and varied types of tentacles. I'm also fitting mini servo motors to the tentacles so some will move under power.
im hoping that the ones which move, will "nudge" the others , to create the impression that they are all moving or slithering around............. Well that's the theory lol

Just a wee quick update.
mask sculpt is progressing with some more tentacles completed .
ive took a time out for some studio art :D (See other post in replica props)
i also wanted to make a new key this year, so started soldering the master up.

I'll make a mould of this then cast the finished one.

Started making a brand new pipe.
i like the way Tony Cipriano works when he does some of his maquettes, so I've sculpted the bowl from clay, then made a mould.
ive poured a plaster master of the bowl for final working. I can then get the fine details scraped in.
after I sculpt on the crab claws, I'll made another mould of the whole thing etc etc.
The sharper eyed among you will notice its very slightly larger than the original one I made last year.
i wanted to make it a wee bit bigger, but also be able to " light it up" with a standard LED tea light, although this time without having to strip it all apart.
it should just drop in now.
we'll see lol.........

Nice embroidery. If I had one of those machines I would have a lot of fun personalizing things.

It is pretty cool.
My wife has made a lot of gifts for people since she got it at Christmas.
I've dealt with the software and digitising for her, but she is getting up to speed with that too.

I need to do some " man stuff" with it, that's why I'm looking and trying leather etc. :) lol

Thanks alpha.
the only hat I've ever made was the same one last year ( check my 2013 posts).
for this one I specifically wanted to try leather, so I did a bit of research on the web.
i still don't know what I'm doing but making it up as I go along :D
The design I did on coreldraw and it was all trial and error really.

leathers a bit more difficult than felt but hopefully worth it in the end

Re: New Davy Jones Costume for Disney Cruise 2014 - UPDATE April, first mask pull

Ok chaps - First mask pull.
ive found done minor issues after pulling , so I'll fix these in the plaster mould with some additional plaster.
other fan that, not too bad

Y, it was a bit of a bugger, but I cleaned out what I could , then washed it down with some alcohol and some naphtha
The first pull usually drags the remaining wee bits out.

Decided to make my own leather belt and buckle.
this is the belt in black leather, but I'm going to change it to brown leather.
im going for the bronze buckle (left hand one )
the buckle was sculpted in clay from reference photos from the film, and it's still to be "dressed " with barnacles etc.

thoughts welcome...... If anyone still watching this long running soap post lol.

Just thought I'd post this .... Fairly chuffed with my first time doing metal casting.
this prop is to tie in with my Davy Jones costume .

I made the original from metal and plastic , then made a silicon mould.

I then poured it using molten metal on the kitchen table lol.

Its not perfect, but now I know it's ok, I'll redesign the master key and make a new mould.
