New BMF coming

Just thought I throw this in for all you version spotters, I'm still learning,

EpVIIweb.jpg click little falcon to make a really really big falcon :)

My first impressions when I saw the Ep 7 Falcon in the teaser was that it had some elements of the 32",.....now the closer I look & with an HD version of it, I can't see any,.....the back end of it looks all of the 5 footer,....my mistake, HH, you were right mate

Side.jpg

Looking at the top view of the Greenham Common full size Falcon, I also see the 5 foot version.....apart from the 50p shaped opening on the starboard hull beside the cockpit, which looks large like the 32"......but the 2 red stripes beside it are painted as the 5 footer,.....theres still a missing part that goes on the mandible/ hull....the piece that goes there is probably the mose identifiable between the 5 foot & 32", so I guess we'll have to wait till we see a good front on view,

Its a bit hard to see but the trianglar piece looks like it has the Jagdpanther part, like the 5 footer,...the cockpit doesnt look too long either

.......so all in all the Episode 7 Falcon looks like its the 5 Footer they're working off.....& adding more fine greeblies

The Hasbro Hero Falcon gets 95% of its details from the 32",.....apart from the mandible/hull parts (McLaren), the Jagdpanther part in the triangular opening, the spacing of the 4 vertical pieces on the engine deck & the cockpit looking a bit stumpy

So,.....the Hasbro is nothing like the Ep 7 Falcon

BUT.....they have got the dimesions spot on

... my daughter has an slr camera and I'm seeing her Saturday what focal length would you recommend ?

The rule of thumb is for 35mm SLR a focal length of 50mm for the reproduction of focal length closest to the human eye with a low amount of distortion. If you know the model of the SLR, I presume it is a digital SLR, you can calculate the equivalent using this http://www.digified.net/focallength/ calculator.

BUT !!! You can get the least amount of perspective distortion with every camera that has an optical zoom. Just move away from the object as far as possible and then zoom in as close as you can. Do not use digital zoom!

Regardless of the above, kudos for sharing your comparison !!!

Maybe it got overshadowed in all the hub-bub about the new lightsaber and the black stormtrooper, but I haven't seen any complaints about the Falcon in the trailer clearly being CG and that it no longer has the all white engine glow. I sincerely don't care about such stuff, but I know others were really moistening themselves over the return of practical effects and models (as if the PT had none, but I digress) and usually these are the kinds of things that cheese some people off. Yet, nothing.

And even if this sequel trilogy sucks, people will still say they were better than the prequels just because it's a thing to say.

I don't want to derail the thread with a PT, OT debate (because, kill me). As far as I'm concerned, all Star Wars is like sex and pizza. Even when it's not great, it's still pretty awesome! :D

As much as I LOVE real models, there is just no way these movies are going to go big with old school models in the action scenes. Cg lets you do all the crazy camera stuff, and lets the directors adjust the scene 500 times. It would be cooler if they developed a more advanced motion control system and went that way...but the directors would have to give up the control to the fx guys somewhat that way.

So far in the star wars movies a lot of the details of the full scale x-wings and Falcon are way off from what the models are. It would be nice if for once they were spot on matched to the cg version.

Also remember J.J. is a big fan of the original star wars over empire. Would make sense we would see the 5-footer take front and center in his project.

I wonder if the HASBRO designers didn't just get a ton of 32 inch reference photos, with a few 5 footer ones mixed in :) Because I didn't notice a difference in the 2 until the internet came around and showed me what was what :)

ILM made the 5 footer & the set builders did their best to replicate the model full scale, maybe this time around they made the full size set, then crammed the real greeblies on the sidewalls from the set onto the CG model of the 5 footer

Dont forget that every time you see the Falcon in ESB without motion blur, youre looking at the 5 footer.......(not including the full size set, the ones stuck to the Avenger & the ones hanging from the Medical Frigate):D

Its crazy now, It's like a fashionable, unwritten law, you have to say you hate the special editions, the prequel trilogy and CGI.
I wish we could go back to the old days before 97 when just saying you hate the ewoks was enough to be a "real" star wars fan.
I for one, no matter how good these films are, will miss George above all.

I feel the same way about ewoks as Darth Vader does when he goes camping :)

This question is for the 3d shapeway gods in here. How exactly do you set up the proper scale for printing from 3ds max to shapeways. I may make a few oddball falcon parts myself that I doubt anyone else will make/want. Since Im pretty handy with 3ds max I thought I might try it out. Just don't want to have 50 test runs getting the scale down...anyhow..any help would be awesome! :)

I'm getting this awful feeling that I want to move the mandibles out lengthways about 8mm. (This is now definitely wrong after making better comp pics 7 dec 14)

If you are in doubt the I´d suggest you model a cube with defined lengths, i.e. 1 inch each axis, export it and upload it to shapeways, you´ll get a preview with measurements. If not the correct size, change accordingly ;)
