New BMF coming

Man . . . how cool would it be if somebody built a MF "bigature" the size of a two-car garage?

I'm picturing a whole series of SW "bigatures". Disney could display them all in one place at a theme park. The MF, TIEs, X-wings, AT-AT, AT-ST, perhaps a Star Destroyer (have to notch that one's scale down compared to the others), etc. Sorta like those airplane museums where they have a bunch of small & medium-size historic planes on display.

It'll never happen but it would be pretty awesome if it did. You can't really display "life size" copies of a lot of SW stuff because of the scales of things. This could be a compromise. They could build them bigger than a SUV but small enough for people to walk around them and get a good look. Not to mention keeping the costs/space of the whole exhibit under control.

The 32 inch falcon is certainly within the HOT TOYS strike zone. It's a far cry from 1/6th scale, but they do have to draw the line someplace. They were showing off a 1/6 scale batplane from The DARK NIGHT RISES for awhile, then it became a 1/12 or something scale. Just seeing all the new HOT TOYS upcoming stuff makes me hope for falcons and x-wings.... for now...hasbro, we are looking at you to fill our voids (yeah that sounded just like I meant! ).. but come on hot toys, you can't release a 1/6 han and chewie and not give them something to fly around in! :)

Ok..back to surgery on the falcon!

Ok here are the comps as promised, they can help in a number of ways it depends what model you are pushing it towards.
The Hsmf is a photo that I took from about 9 feet away to minimise perspective problems. I spent a long time setting up the camera exactly 90% from the angle of the top elevation, once I had taken pics I set it all up again from scratch and both setup pics came out identical so I’m happy with the quality :)
The 32 inch model ref I’m using to base it all against is the Maruska plans because I just cant find a decent over head shot of the 32” filming model (which I of course would have used, if I could), every thread that I have read comparing Maruskas work is saying that its spot on to the 32” and even lines up very favourably to the Haynes blueprint drawing for example, here...

Here is the Haynes computer drawing and Maruskas 32”

Andres (Vfxsup) very sweet and accurate photogram of the 5’ and the Maruska 32”

And now the two comps we really need. (the following two comp pics were updated with more accurate Hsmf layers 7 dec 14)

And the Hsmf and Andres 5’ this one is a bit harder to see but you just about can.
All this was just to help me decide if I am going to bring the sidewalls in or extend the panelling out. It also helps with canopy and mandible decisions too.

So the question I have to have is "how can Hasbro get THAT close, and yet miss areas of the ship?". I mean, they're clearly paying attention to the sculpt, and it's not a case of incorporting play features, so what's up with that? So close and yet...anyhoo, so it looks like maybe the mandible sidewalls shouldn't be removed and set back while the aft quarter walls should? I mean, just based on the top view outline.

Just from looking at just 32'' studio model..I had come up with leaving the FRONT sidewalls alone and only moving the side/rear ones. I think the rear/side ones are pushed out for 2 reasons. #1 With the stickers, thats kinda where the details would poke out to #2 Makes the model more secure...the more overhang you have, the better chance you have of the overhang breaking off and making the model not as "play-able" for kids. The plastic used here is really not sturdy at all when you get down to something thin like that.

The eyes can do funny things tho.. there are some areas I know are round and should be perfect all the way around, yet in the photos above it looks like it come off badly in spots...yet its all about the camera angle being a tad not dead center (as you said)

My question is how did Hasbro make a better Falcon than all the model companies, taking in consideration, detail, accuracy, size and price?:lol

Just so that I contribute at least A BIT to this thread: what focal length did you use? :p I know, I know, but despite the 9ft distance it may cause distortion.

Good question,....is it too much of a coincidence that Lucasfilm has new owners?

Look how accurate the Bandai model kits are compared to FineMolds

.....or is it better modern technology?

I'm afraid I can't tell you the focal length it's not an slr or anything special, DaddyfromNaboo but already I'm so fascinated with the results I want to take as many pics using the different compact cameras and phones to see if there is any difference, my daughter has an slr camera and I'm seeing her Saturday what focal length would you recommend ?

I think its just to keep the price down, if you put the stickers on theres no problem about wall depth

Agreed. Or put in other words - just what is the history behind this toy? How was it generated?

Have we already been able to conclude if this is (or is not) a dead match for the ep VII MF (other than the dish)? Do we know if Abrams et.al. created their VII MF as indeed a hybrid, and if so then did Hasbro get digital files on the VII MF?

To me it seems unusual that a toy company would make such a big toy that doesn't do anything, that doesn't accurately match any of the previous filming vehicles, yet gets so many details and shapes right. Things that even model companies got wrong no less. I strongly suspect that we will see a re-release of this toy in a years time, modified to match the Ep. VII vehicle, possibly with added detail and/or working features.

Plus, look at it this way. Lucas retained ownership of all the original models after the sell off. More than likely, Hasbro got all the reference for this Falcon toy from Disney, not George. In that respect, I think this is a thinly veiled copy of the Ep. VII Falcon.

And business (toy and movie alike) strives to move forward. Hasbro is not going to be releasing Return Of The Jedi toys... Toys moving forward are film tie-in products (as they always have been), so it seems to me that this is an ep VII MF (dish still a mystery though).

My theory is that Abrams/Disney has homogenized the original two models to make their own ep VII digital model of the MF, and that Hasbro subsequently got copies of files to produce the toy.

Yeah, looking at the Disney diecast Falcon, (again, admittedly in its box) I was musing about the same thing - there suddenly seems to be both much improved proportions on ALL of the vehicle toys being produced since the sale AND a level of...consistency between them all. how likely that along with photo surveys, licensees are now getting either digital models or orthographic renders from them?
.
Anyways, I wasn't ripping on this Falcon, just puzzling over how they did SO much right but have a couple of weird areas that don't line up. You nail...NAIL...90% of the ship's geometry where nobody else has, but then just kind of wander off in a few spots for no readily apparent reason? Odd unless there's some master 3D file that's being referred to which has those differences. Not sure about this being the basis for an eventual E7 Falcon toy though (unless it's another Hero Series release) - based on photos only (Purolator just sent notification that I've got a package waiting for pickup this morning - woot!) it doesn't seem big enough to put figures in, and they would need to massively re-engineer the internal supports to make place-space in the hull. Plus Hasbro already HAS a nice big MF tooled which most kids and parents will be more than satisfied with. I suspect the BMF will probably see a new radar dish and new sound files - boom, one high-end Falcon out the door in time for Christmas 2015. If I'm Hasbro it just seems to make more sense to amortize the cost of developing that toy a bit further by doing another release based on it instead of starting over.

I think Timmy nailed the question on what is on the horizon for the next BMF..... A reboxed / tweaked Legacy falcon.

Interesting theories on how they came up with the design of the current MF. With 3D modeling being king today, I agree that there is a mystery file out there that is a bled of previous models/scans. Did it come from Disney? Who knows....all I care about is that we got a accurate, big display piece for the cost of a cheap model.
