Floquil Enamel Reefer White and Grime. Those paints are harder to come by nowadays

This is what QuartZ used on his amazing 1:72 FM Falcon...

Wow thanks for the link, Lear60man! Why does it seem like the ILM modelers didn't employ pre-shading on the Falcon? .

It's my understanding that they didn't pre-shade -- or very little anyway. I think there is some around the circular gunport discs and very subtle around the circular openings on the manibles, but that's it. To my eye is doesn't even look like they gave the model an overall wash, but were very selective with colored washes (rusts, yellows, grime, etc.) -- mostly in the sidewalls and heavy greebly areas.

Wow I used to follow Dana's blog but it stopped, where you his buddy who was building theres along side?

Its a pity that his images are gone,......I think I have saved most of them to a folder

J

Yes, he and I spent many hours in my shop working together on these.

Hard to believe it was so many years ago. Sadly I am no longer in touch with him...

Wow thanks for the link, Lear60man! Why does it seem like the ILM modelers didn't employ pre-shading on the Falcon? Almost like they just gave it a thick coat of gray straight away on those small parts, with shading sprayed on afterwards. With all those nice detailed parts one would think they could've sprayed black first so that shadows can be built in. One thing I love too on the 5-footer are the frayed plating edges. Those dents really make it a hunk of junk.

I have no idea how they painted the 32" or 5 footer". I just went into my specific bag of tricks to find what worked for me. They could have painted them differently who knows.

Guys,

Ive hit a brick wall. Ive got an led lighting setup consisting of 4 bright leds but do i need more than this to give me the powerful light needed for the rear light?

Thanks

Lee

For my 1/144 I used a 50-50 mix of Model Master Camouflage Gray and Light Gray, which I got from Jay Chladek's scheme.

But the exact ILM colors I gathered are 50-50 of Floquil Enamel Reefer White and Grime. Those paints are harder to come by nowadays, so I think Deck Tan and White that John mentioned are a good combo too, if not the Model Master Camouflage Gray. The weathering does make the ship darker than the original base shade especially when you overdo it - when you start the weathering there's a tendency to go crazy just because it's fun.

Phil's thread (http://www.therpf.com/f10/32-falcon-progress-more-new-piccys-page-23-a-48473/index15.html) mentions these exact Floquil enamel colors for the die-hards. I just wish there were a visual paint guide somewhere showing where they all go. I'm at a loss even for which color to use for the streaks. I just did it by eye.

Oh, Astroboy, did you just order online from Walmart?

MicroMark has a microlux and vallejo air line of paints. You may be able to find a lot of those old railroad colors in that line. The microlux ones, are made by vallejo, just relabelled and exclusive to micromark.

They are supposedly color matched to the old polyscale colors and many use the same names. I am not sure if these are also color matches fo the Floquil enamel line, but...

There may be matches for these under different names, or available in the line but not stocked by Micromark

LOL the look on his face is priceless! "Dad I am so going to get my hands all over this new toy of yours, I don't care how cool you paint it up!"

Went and picked-up the Falcon from Walmart today. It's a lot smaller then I thought it would be, and much smaller than I expected for $60.

It doesn't seem much bigger then the old Kenner one in overall size, just correct in proportions and details.

I do like it and I'm excited to work on it when sidewall and cockpit detail kits are available.

Does Model Masters Camouflage Gray work for the Star Destroyers, AT AT, AtSt, X wings, etc??

Honestly they all look the same.

Typically I use warm gray tones for rebel craft and cool gray tones for Empire ships. So Camo gray can work well for X-Wings while Light gray is a better shade for a Tydirium shuttle.
