New big-screen Star Wars Rey movie announced at SW Celebration 2023

Lucasfilm honestly reminds me of a home full of failed DIY projects…high on ambition but with no idea how to actually do the work and complete anything either on-time, within budget, or with quality.

Half-painted walls, stacks of tile that have been purchased and never installed, exposed plumbing, doorways with no doors, etc. The owner excitedly leading visitors from room to room and pointing around the house at all the things that they intend to complete “next month” and never get done.

How many projects have been announced and never completed, or have had to be completely redone at double the cost, etc.?

If any of these newly announced projects actually “happen”, on-time, on-budget, or at all, I would be shocked.

Agreed, and all I can think… what the HELL are
they thinking? Do kids love the sequels so much they want it continuing because they have doubled down on theme park attractions? There has to be some business rationale to this.
I'd imagine so, just like the generation that grew up with the Prequels loved them because that was what they grew up with. I think that the current generation of kids love the Sequels because it's what they grew up with and to them that's their Star Wars.

While that may be true, it's unlikely they'll feel nostalgia for the films as adults the way the OT era fans and the PT era fans held their love for their respective trilogies for the simple fact that the younger audience has much more to choose from than either of the previous generations combined. Even during the PT era, there weren't nearly as many tentpole effects driven films on the bleeding edge of the tech. Just that trilogy, the Lord of the Rings, and thinking off the top of my head, those are the only ones that come to mind.

The new fans also have more Star Wars film/ television content than any generation prior which ups the chance they could get burned out on it and lose all interest forever. The reality is that Star Wars content being made has no end in sight. They'll never get a break from it. You can't feel nostalgia for something that never leaves.

The rarity of content of the OT and even the PT with three years between films and almost twenty years between trilogies made us appreciate and value the films far more than we would have had there been a film or show every year.

Out of the 3 films, I ironically feel that Rey has the best chance of being good/decent, especially if it is a one off.

Rey is the jedi master founding a new order so it makes sense for her to be OP compared to her peers. She is what Luke was supposed to be.

Mando, dont really care tbh could go well I guess.

First Jedi is likely going to flop badly. Disney doesnt understand Star Wars, let alone the lore. Are they going to properly have knights using protosabers and the split with the Sith with the Sith inventing lightsabers (contrasting the jedi dogma vs Sith innovation?). Or is it going to be a surprise reveal that the founder of the jedi was a woman and wanted peace or something and make it a generic “star wars” film with lightsaber battles?

Not very confident when the best thing out of Star Wars has been “Andor” which has been praised because it is “not like Star Wars at all.” Sounds to me that its just a good show that didnt need the Star Wars IP to succeed.

I agree. How many times have we seen “ this generations Star Wars “ in marketing?

If any of these projects ever actually get off the ground.

It sounds to me like they are still spitballing…

Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars return begins with "the Jedi in disarray," says Kathleen Kennedy

And Mark Hamill is definitely not involved, based on these comments:

Kennedy added about whether Luke will be involved in the story: "I don't know if we'll spend a lot of time in flashbacks or Force ghosts or things like that, but certainly, the spirit of what he represents to her is going to be significant."

I am confused ? I need to take a moment and process this. You kinda liked the sequels? Like casually enjoyed them? Like you could take them or leave them? You kinda liked them?

Does someone who sorta likes something take every opportunity to educate the whole of the RPF on how good that something is? How it is irrefutably, absolutely, and meticulously planned out from the beginning by Hidalgo and his crack continuity team. That Rian was right and the Luke of TLJ was the natural and proper progression of the character? That the diad nonsense gave Kylo a meaningful arc and the Emperor being back made perfect sense. Now it’s “I Kinda liked the sequels” ?

I am not talking a couple responses here and there, you have more like hundreds(maybe thousands) in just the TLJ and Rise threads . You referenced screenshots from obscure ancillary materials: “page 213 paragraph 3 sentence 2 confirms yes that Luke originally was conceived by George in a 2012 draft to have a pointy beard and top knot.” You immediately shot down anyone who voiced a contrary opinion on the sequels. I honestly thought it was your job to defend them for a couple years there, dying on every single hill of disagreement.

Fast forward to now and it’s just a casual “I kinda liked” the sequels and “Disney sucks”?
THAT is a retcon of epic, Disney-esque proportions.

I think movies now are a different animal than the PT era. The sequels blur into all the other effects driven movies of today and I would be surprised if the sequels are this generations star wars.

How many times has something been marketed as “ this generations star wars” in the last 25 years?

Agree with everything here. The only other comparable franchise is Harry Potter in the 2000’s.

How many times have we heard “this generations Star Wars”? In marketing?

You could say I've had some enlightenment since then. Returning back to the EU, and remembering my first love, so to speak, has changed my perspectives. I still enjoy the Sequels. Heck TLJ still rates as one of my top Star Wars films.

Also one of my reasons for liking the Sequels.(same reason for liking TCW) was because it contained George's influence on it. And I kinda blindly consumed everything George touched.(heck I blindly consumed anything with "Star Wars" on it) I wanted to adhere to George's "vision." But when you realize that George's "vision" changes every year. Which vision do you adhere to? His "vision in 1977,1980, 1999, 2005, 2008?

So for me, these days. "My Star Wars", is everything circa 2005, with a few additions from then to 2012.

And yeah, Disney sucks. Even when I defended the Sequels, I still held disdain for Disney. That disdain has only grown. I used to be able to separate the new Star Wars from Disney. I can no longer do that.

Disney’s doubling down on the ST?

Seriously though, and selfishly speaking, I’d prefer Disney start off this new movie with Rey waking up to realize that the ST was a bad dream - see Dallas and Patrick Duffy. As a not so wise man once said: “Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to.”
