New 52 - The Joker's Face WIP

Hey, all.

As the title suggests, yes, I'm attempting to make a mask of the Joker's own face from the Batman comic arc 'Death of the Family'. However, unlike many of the talented people found here on the RPF, I have no experience whatsoever with moulding and casting, and my budget is too low.

The next best thing would be to modify an existing mask. And I found the perfect mask to do this.

Since the face looks like it's decaying anyway, it would be a good start. So, I ordered, and got it. I traced out where I needed to cut, and here's the result.

I already have the belt, and will be attaching it to the mask soon.

However, I have encountered a problem. The inside is a plain grey colour, and I need to make the inside look as if it's made of flesh. I was thinking of using a vinyl dye since regular paint would crackle since the vinyl is so floppy (and I don't exactly want that on my face...). But can anyone recommend any alternatives to this idea?

(Due to the moulding process, there are wrinkles inside that look veiny, so for once, thanks to this, I am grateful for that!)

What will sell this as torn flesh will be the raw ragged red edges. Have you thought about thick goblets of gloss fabric paint?

I've cut the mask as rugged as I can imagine, and I've looked for something which will give that effect. The only problem I see with gloss fabric paint is that it would crack as the mask is flexible.

I'm not sure if this'll be of any help to you, but Joker 52 Death of the Family Severed Face Mask by shoggothassembly there's a link to a mask of the same style, hopefully it might help with the painting.
As for the paint itself, I've briefly looked at Perma-blood and it seems pretty solid, you can use it on fabric so its got a goo bit of flex to it, bit pricey for me though :unsure

Funny you should send me that link, because a few weeks ago, I kept my eye on that to see if I could afford it. Postage to the UK, however...that's a bit steep.

Perma-blood...hmm, might give it a go. But does it dry well, though? I'm putting this on my face, after all.

I'm hoping to get a custom mask from them myself. That postage is a bit steep but if it's for proper recorder delivery it's worth it, I've had things from the states shipped over and go missing for a couple of weeks in transit and it's a pain.

As far as I know it drys well, it's used on horror props that have to be handled, from what I understand it dries pretty quickly to.

Update on the mask! The belt has been added, so now it can go on my face!

Still no progress on the blood - won't be able to do that in time for Halloween, but it's going to be done sometime after - possibly even after Christmas.

Some lip retractors have been ordered, so my teeth will be exposed without the use of prosthetics, and some brown trainers have been ordered for the costume as well.

I would Consider you using Silicon, ive been working with it ALOT recently for TDK Joker Scaring and its great stuff, Smooth on products Re whT im usi g you can also get pigments so yiu could dye the silicon to look fleshy and just brush it into the interior of the mask, let it dry (cure abiut 15-30min dependi g which you buy) perfectly safe for your face, then u can always add swab a little extra in the edges of the mask to kinda give it that torn flesh look, its very realistic stuff super safe. Just make sure u follow details of saftey and protocol.

The uk distributer is a comoany called Bentley Advanced Materials Products Page - Bentley Advanced Materials i use the Skin tite but obviousky depending in Quantity etc, and ur investment value u can choose different.. Also... Id orobaly recomend the wound kit for yourself it gives a small amount of everything yiud need + ud grt alittle it of prop glass LoL hope this helps

I have painted a mask with cheap acrylic paint and had no problems with cracking. If you saved the scraps, you could experiment a bit.

Seeing how Halloween has just passed, I suppose a quick update is in order.

Last year, I used this mask along with a boiler suit and brown trainers, but with little to no resemblance to my original proposal. This year, things went a bit differently.

I lowered the forehead to expose more of the "flesh", and made the grin wider. I swapped the twine for the mouth with string (with hooks at the ends), and also made some fake teeth with some false nails and liquid latex. I also did a bit of editing to the boiler suit, shortening the sleeves, ankles, and getting a name badge with "JOE" on it. This is the end result - I'm pretty proud of it, being my second time.

Didn't really want to paint my arms white, due to the party being packed and the possibility of the paint rubbing off on people's clothing - I'll look into Pax-Paint next time I do this.
