Nerf Gun Props? YES!

Hey all,

I'll try to answer a couple of the questions. Once again I'll take very little credit, for I've only been doing this a couple months. Johnson Arms is the guy we're all trying to emulate.

Q - Hey great job. I have one that i want to paint. can you give me some details? What paint did you use? how many coats? did you take it apart at all? did any parts get gummed up? thanks

A - I use the cheapest flat black paint I can find (walmart - .98). It took a good 2 cans to do the Vulcan. 2 coats of black. I don't take many of my guns apart, but a lot of guys do, and as I'm starting to mod most of mine now, I do take some apart. I'm decent at masking, and I do A LOT of masking. The only gummed up gun I had was the Barricade (which I did take apart). I use flat paint when ever I can, the silver used a rustoleum appliance paint, I like the look of it. Most other silvers are too gloss. Forgot to add, sand the hell out of the gun 1st. A palm sander with 150 grit gets rid of the NERF logos, then hand sand the rest with 220 grit.

I've got some more almost finished picks to post of the Vulcan. My technique for aging was posted a page back or so. And for dirtying it up I've been using a thinned down testors flat black, or black rub n' buff.

Q - Do any of these guns in this thread are able to shoot? How long does it take? And how much would it usually cost (range)?

A - All my guns are able to shoot, they have to IMO. I've taken to modding them so they shoot double as far, there are lots of videos on youtube. Length of time depends on the gun. The vulcan and my newest steampunk longstrike took forever, 20+ hours? Smaller guns take less time of course. Start with a Maverick, they're cool, easy to deassemble and lots of reference out there. Prices depend on the cost of spraycans. In Canada, where I live, we pay through the nose ($7-9.00) per can. I usually head down to walmart in the states and stock up. You can usually get 2 smaller guns per can of flat black. Then it depends on what other colors you want. It takes a bit of money to get a selection of colors (I'm about 50 cans ATM), but it's not bad.

It's a lot of fun, pretty easy to do something cool. This started as a high-school 3D modelling assignment for me. We got a 3D printer and I needed something cool to intro it. We had kids paint guns, model steampunk parts, print them and then attach them to their guns... err blasters. It was very popular.

Like I said earlier, grab a maverick for $10.00, get a couple cans of spraypaint and give it a try.

Any other help, let us know. I do recommend reading through the 50+ pages, it's required reading for getting started with Nerf guns.

I've got quite afew guns I'll post up as soon as I figure out where I placed the USB for my camera. I've only got one nerf gun that's still in the works, but I've got quite a few airsoft and cap guns I've put together. All with a post apocalypse theme goin' on.

How did you do the metallic finish on them nerf gun?

That's drybrush painting mostly. There's some other black magic going on, but that's the stuff you learn from doing hundreds of these things :)

That will be great! Good luck in your search :)

Awesome new work being posted. I've been after one of those space above and beyond castings for a while too, I love the way you finished it.

Looks great!

I ended up with only about 5 hours to do my Firefly Jayne Cobb Vera, so I couldn't do the finish detail work, but here's what I ended up with for dragoncon 2012:

And as promised the MIB versions of the Buzz Bee Tommy 20 and Hawk.
My buddy added a lightsaber soundcard and green leds to his tommy 20.
I added a iron man 2 repulsor card and blue leds to mine.
They where coated with some nice silver paint and detailed with carbon, black paint an d metallic blue. We had a blast (no pun intended) making these and carrying them to a fair today.

Hope you enjoy because we certainly did.

Thanks! I was hoping to get Adam to sign it, but when I found out his agent wanted $60 to sign it, I passed. My wife and myself also were wearing our Jayne outfits, and also one of our BIG dragoncon goals was to get a pic with Adam in our outfits.. and sadly AGAIN, we were told he was signing only, and we had to set up a photo shoot session in order to get a photo... and he was already booked up solid.

He was still quite gracious and apologetic, and spent some time with us chatting, so the sting was assuaged somewhat, but still we were disapointed, especially since he had to cancel dragoncon the year before.

Maybe next year, and I'll have my Vera done then?
