Need to make a Spacesuit!

Heres a pic of the LEVA shell helmet that Larry sent and my Mig helmet for comparison. Both going to be "ANSA" style when I am done.
THANKS LARRY! :love

(cant seem to get my Flikr photos to show anymore, ???)

I used the Aeromax Jr. helmet for my halloween costume last year. I cut off some of the details and added new one. Gave it some paint and quilted lining. The space suit is a vintage snowmobile suit that I removed all the insulation from the inside to keep the quilting look. The neck ring is from a 5 gallon bucket lid. All told less then $100 to complete. I will be adding to it for this year as I ran out of time last year.

One other piece of the suit I am trying to figure out is the coupling on the stomach for the suit's air hose. Then there's the air hose itself. Any ideas folks? Bear in mind that the suit may range from being rather thin materials to the thickness of a snowsuit.

There's a million PVC plumbing fittings that are lightweight and look good:

I've used that black one, second from bottom before; I don't think I ever knew what it was called, but they were less than a buck each at Home Depot. For air hoses we used those corrugated plastic tubes with the slit down the middle called Cord Keepers (you know, that you're supposed to use for your computer cords or stereo leads or whatever to keep them from untangling. We painted some and covered others in the same material we did the suits out of.

you can also use some great looking robes.
like the Ripley space suit had parts of Tyrell's robe in it.

COMPLETE NONSENSE !

:confused

Those costumes had nothing in common... Besides, The A L I E N spacesuits were made in England and Tyrell's robe in the USA... Oh yes, and also A L I E N came 3 years before Blade Runner !

:lol

Awesome advice, Larry! As usual. I'll have to swing by Home Depot soon. There's one right down the road from here. :)

I see an "ANSA" Space helmet here.
How much for shipping?????
:cool

AMAZING THREAD!!

Could some one please tell me the dimensions.. i.e. diameter of the dome used here.. I'm ordering one on Monday for a replica build and I thought it was 350-400 mm.. but upon inspection of that picture it looks much bigger??

Aww... My hopes have dashed. Kinda.

This was the image that first popped in my mind when I started reading this thread.

Mine's a 13" acrylic dome, which is what... 330mm? We use it to fit to 10" neck rings which we used to make out of corrugated hosing but are widely available on ebay now with those MiG helmets or by themselves.

Found the globe here.... | Plastics cut to YOUR size | eSheet Ltd

But they only do a 300mm? and it's expensive in single units.. will 3cm be that noticeable?
The 400mm looks as if it would be massive? and also which is best, acrylic or polycarbonate??
The guy is saying that acrylic isn't firesafe, and it would be an insurance issue??

I'd have to cut off the base flange and widen the neck hole.. then fit a neck ring..
Which I can't seem to find on Ebay at all?? Any suggestions??
I've contacted a seamstress who can do me the hood in heavy white Nylon.
So it's just the neck and the hose fittings to find.

Can I post WIP piccies on here??

Aha!! a pressure cooker.. If I cut off the pan and the top of the lid.. remove the handle.. It would leave the twist to seal rings..
In retrospect a 300mm globe is way too small once the aperture is cut.. which knocks at least 2 inches off the base..
Looking at some of the sizings here - Helmet, Pressure Bubble, A7-L, Shepard, Apollo 14 - Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

It would appear that the helmets were only 10-11 inches tall, plus the same wide..
400mm may have to be the way forward.. but the price goes up further.. dammit!!

Success.. Just bought a cheap 30 Litre Biorb acrylic fishtank.. Now to remove the flange top and drill holes for the pipe fittings. It'll be here on thursday.. I'll post some WIP piccies.

Ok, think it may be a bit big.....
I butchered a clasp ring form an old resin barrel to use as the neck seal...
The filter ran though a hole in the base ( now the top) , but it'll be hidden by the white nylon hood..

No, I don´t think it´s too big. If you add something to the top like some kind of lightsource, and probably a more elaborate neckseal, and wear some kind of headset with that cap etc. I think it will really look in proportion with the rest of the suit, I imagine.

Ah.. reapproching this.. After finding some construction details..
I'm going to hack up my dome to make some fiberglass tooling for the inner and use the rest for a hinged visor..
