Need to make a Spacesuit!

Hello fine people of this amazing forum. I've only recently discovered this site and I am hoping to find a way to solve a problem of mine. I've gotten in touch with a small film-maker and he and I have discussed making a short film involving a female astronaut encountering an alien. Now, we have pretty much all we need to proceed, except for a space suit for her to wear.

Now, I'm not huge on realism at this point, but I have a few specifications. Namely, the actress is very attractive so I want her face visible and the suit would fit her rather snuggly, but still be thick enough to look like it provides protection. I have some sketches of what I'd like it to look like, roughly, with a few alterations. The sketches are for a different project entirely.

The main issue I am running into is finding/building an appropriate helmet. I need something that has a neck ring and locks into place, but I can't find precisely that. I thought about using a helmet-diving setup, but they don't quite match up exactly. I'm thinking something along the lines of the 2001 helmets or something similar. Something where you can see the character's face. Not sure on the best/cheapest materials to use and I don't want to just grab a motorcycle helmet. :)

Any help is greatly appreciated! Now, I am on a budget, but the suit is the most important prop in the film.

Thanks!!!

On average, most Schuberth motorcycle helmets are open enough that the whole face can be clearly seen through the visor.

Removing more of the internal padding would show more face and some creative addition of greeblies would make a great helmet.

Another option is the open face helmets that have a full-face visor.
Some of those have detachable chin pieces. Onto these you can add all sorts of fancy extras to disguise it and the overall look would resemble the 2001 helmets.

Check out the deep space salvage guys in the opening scene of Aliens - Their lids have a sort of headover along the skirt, which makes the airtight seal... a bit like a hazmat helmet.

Failing that, you can alwayz jazz up a plastic goldfish bowl!!

Ah, one of my fave female space pilots...

Female alien. Why do you ask?

Haha. :lol

I'm making a space suit right now, but it's a very different kind. For a neck seal though you can find some kind of rubber bellows or sleeve that will fit the bottom of your helmet and a plastic or metal ring on the suit. The easiest and cheapest solution for the ring would be a knitting or crocheting ring, Jo-Ann's fabrics, a couple dollars. Paint it black or add some other stuff to it to beef it up.

Good ideas for the neck ring. What kind of suit are you making?

I've actually looked into snow suits. They fit the bill pretty well, but it is hard to find the right kind of pattern or a full suit that is without a hood or fur lining. But they do look nice!

Huh... I actually think that snow suit is a excellent idea. Any seamstress could modify the collar and add straps or something to cover the logos. A neck seal, pair of good gloves, and boots would make that suit go far.

I always liked these two threads...

A bunch of good helmet stuff on this one...

This one has a steam punk look but could be made in a more modern style...

Just my two cents.

The trick would be to find the right color of suit, as well as a neck ring for the helmet. Cutting down the helmet would be a cinch, too.
