Need Help with Potentially First Cosplay of a Character Ever

Hi guys! New to the RPF. My girlfriend and I are going to SWC next month and have decided to do our first cosplays. She's decided to go as Sana Starros from the main Star Wars comic but the problem is, there are a few pieces we need help first of all, identifying what exactly they'd be called and secondly, where we could purchase them (as our crafting skills are pretty limited).

The main piece we're having issues with is the scarf....wrap... sleeve... thing? I can't even figure out how someone would pattern it or what you might call it.

There's a few more angles of it. She even wears it as a hood in some panels, although it's certainly not 100% necessary for our needs.

The other pieces we need help identifying are the boots and gloves. I believe the most accurate name for the gloves would be considered "gauntlets"? Not super complicated.

Then there are the boots, which, as you can see, have this fold over the front of them.

I'm going as Han Solo by the way.

Welcome Chaser! Making costumes and props is a great hobby and I'm glad you're here. I'm not familiar with the character of Sana but I can give you some suggestions. The main thing I turn to are THRIFT STORES. Look for anything and everything to keep costs low and creativity high. For that cloak/wrap/scarf try to find a hoodie or raincoat that you can cut up. Those gloves look like leather welding gloves. The suit itself looks like a bodysuit or wetsuit type outfit but yoga pants and a matching long sleeve shirt would work just fine! Remember, you're going for the ILLUSION so don't get hung up on metal buckles and leather holsters... use cardboard and paint! Most importantly, have fun!!!

Scarf and belt sash are just long pieces of cloth (same material as the shirt), for the scarf you could try something like Jyn wears in R1

Gloves look like leather gardening gloves or maybe even fashion / driving gloves. (Google search leather gloves women)

Boots look like they just have a top cover over a shoe base or maybe even soft slouch boots (Target sold some for a while)
Google leather slouch boots for women also.

The boots look like they are supposed to be "diceshaker" style jackboots. It's a very Star Wars-sy look (Han Solo and most of the military on both sides used WWII surplus jackboots). Any high brown leather-looking boot without lacing will do. Like Holy Wookiee said, the trick is to keep the price down.

In the pictures you have sent, she's seen with both a Han Solo style DL-44 blaster in a shoulder holster in on shot and at the hip in another, and firing a DH-17 rebel blaster in a third. Really, whatever blaster you go with will probably be fine. I'd paint a squirt-gun black, ad a scope made from PVC-piping and concentrate my efforts on getting the gin belt to look cool. Unless your girlfriend insist on waving the blaster around, you're going to see the holster more than the gun itself.

One of the guns she's carrying is an EE-4. Similar to a Boba Fett blaster but without the stock and an added handle.

You don't need a lot of skills to make a great costume, you just need to be creative. Like the others have said, hit up some thrift stores and see what you can repurpose. Good luck with your project!

I agree with the other folks about thrift stores. They are always my "go to" when I first start trying to build something that I'm not going to sew together from scratch. Thrift stores are a wealth of stuff to repurpose; you just have to think outside the box a little sometimes.

Another great option for me, personally, is eBay. I loved to used the "saved searches" feature because then it gives me a list of any new items that have been listed that day that fit within my search parameters. It has helped me a lot over the years, but sometimes it requires quite a bit of patience if you're looking for the "right" item.

To get into specifics, I think the folks above have all listed great ideas for boots, body/suit (matching pants/shirt), gloves, etc. But I wanted to offer a thought on the scarf/wrap/sleeve thing. I like Holy Wookiee's suggestion of finding a hoodie/rain coat to cut up, and I also like division 6's idea of a scarf like Jyn Erso. Another idea to throw in the mix there might be to length of fabric from the store (WalMart, JoAnn Fabrics, Hobby Lobby). If you have no sewing skills, don't worry. I'd wrap the fabric around you and use safety pins or plastic sew-on snaps to create the shape of the garment (you could even use safety pins/sew-on snaps to make the sleeves).

Good luck! Hope to see you both rocking your costumes at Celebration. :)
