Need help with a motor and gear

Hi gang. I'm working on putting a motorized head in a replica kit instead of a spring loaded release. I just think it'd be cooler if the head rose and lowered by itself then popped up and then had to be put back in place. I can go to Radio Shack and get some of the parts but the small electric motors they sell have insanely hight RPM rates and can only be stepped down so much. I also need a little help figuring out the right gear size to attach the rod to for max travel up and down. I'm guessing it's probably simple (diameter of the rise/fall gear controls the rise/fall distance of the attached moving piece) but confirmation is always appreciated.

See the attached file for what I'm looking to buy and build into the kit. The interior space is slightly under a half inch by 4 inches by 6 inches so installing the motor straight on won't be possible. A right angle achieved with bevel gears seems to be the way to fix that though.

Naturally the rod would be pin mounted to the gear and swivel mounted to the head allowing for movement.

Any, the floor is open. Comment and postulate away folks.
