Need Help Urgently

Just for the record, not sure what dirty laundry she would have to air out? This thread was not set out to bash anyone as I had never mentioned who the painters name was aside from maybe 5-6 posts ago when Bill is it? Named her himself. The paint was poor, bad, ****, horrible, w/e you can pull out of a thesaurus plain and simple. if we scroll down to the beginning of the thread I also stated that it was merely the hands and the torso that were ****. Defend her all you want thats your praise allah given right but dont you dare come onto my thread and say she has any dirty laundry on me. I have saved every correspondance with Rhonda and still read them over from time to time when I need a reality check of when thinking of doing online business. I wore the suit twice and it fell apart, I sent Rhonda a message stating my displeasure and was replied to stating it must be my fault the skins were **** the hands were thin and full of hole ( there were 2 small ones along the seams from when I was trimming them) blahblahblah and also she never said she guaranteed the paintjob if I was to wear it. Really wtf did you expect I was going to do with it?

Defend the undefendable all you want I have no time for her or people who defend this particular actions. I have never said she cant paint I said THIS paintup was bad and I merely cautioned you about it.

I thank those who have given input as to what I might do in order to salvage what I had hoped to be a spectacular suit that Ive been wanting for years.

there is way more drama here then there should be for such a smalll forum

I have no dog in this fight----I don't buy anything from anyone because I prefer to scratch-build my own, and I don't sell anything to anyone because I have zero interest in doing that. But as an outsider, it certainly seems to me as if all the drama revolves, in some way or another, around money. I hate to see friendships wrecked and relationships ruined because of it.  It truly is the root of all evil.   :(

Sad work and ethics on the painter. Rob if you cant get the hands stripped well enough i will send you a new pair for the cause.
THIS is the sort of thing that makes the lair the greatest place on the web!  Kudos to you seahunter, kudos to you!

This is a fantasticly phenomenal community - and one thing we do, is look out for one another.

There are two-sides to every story; now let me give you the third side.

Steve told me in detail about the condition of the hands - now, let me give you a Rob-rundown.

The first thing that caught my eye upon receiving them, was that the paint in some areas was peeling off. You know when you were younger and in school, and you'd get bored and make "wounds" with Elmers School Glue, right? Well, it's kind of the same thing, and I spent a wee-bit just peeling off the "paint."

I can make out, at best, three different colors for the base coat. One is a white-ish tone, and the other is more of a brown-yellow-ochre color; and there's kind of a peachy looking color on the palm side of the fingers. I gathered the "whiter" of the two colors was the primer - it also has a sheen to it. Primers should never have a sheen (unless it's a commercial-grade primer). Two things real quick: Latex paint will have trouble sticking to anything with a sheen (unless the latex paint is a primer with bonding agents), as it needs something that it can bite into and grip on to as it cures. The other cause for a shiny coat would be that too many layers were applied. Yup. With flat paint, you can actually build up a sheen by adding multiple coats. This will result in cracking, and failure as the previous layers have not fully cured and will push-off the top coats - also, too much paint is evident also by the muddying of details on the skin. This would explain the lack of adhesion, and the latex paint just "falling off."

There's some weird sheen phenomenon too. The sheen(s) are sporadic, and in some instances it looks like it's coming up from under the base-coat. I don't know why... or how.

The black spots are just globs of paint thrown on most likely at the last minute - sloppily. They were not airbrushed on, but put on with a traditional brush. Some of the black paint is way too shiny to be latex. It's oil-based enamel. You never put an oil-based enamel on something that's going to flex with the wearers movements - it will crack and pop off. "Enamel" is a hardness rating. Anything labeled as an "Enamel" is not meant to flex; it's meant to take abuse and provide durability. You paint resin-plastic, fiberglass, and metal with enamels; for example - a bio helmet.

The black coating used on the "knuckle-duster" portion of the hand has some weird, iridescent shimmer. I think this might be India Ink or the pigment from a household Sharpie Marker. Or one of those industrial grade markers that smell oooooh so good.

Well, I'm hoping you guys out there get the jist of what they look like. Now, I'm going to describe one element about the paint job that really, really, really pisses me off as a practicing painter; brush marks. Yup.... brush marks... where there shouldn't be, and not from a fine-art paint brush you'd use to paint a landscape. No, the brush marks are coarse, like that of a paint brush you'd use to paint your house with; and I should know, because I see that **** all day long. They're only present on the bottoms of the fingers and the palm. This... this just made me mad.

I've been nice in this post, and kept my mouth clean in hopes of just explaining the horror that Steve must have experienced when this got real.

Had this been done by someone who was new to painting, I would support that person and tell him or her what they did wrong, and hope that they would keep practicing to improve their work. No, someone paid for this. You can banter back-and-forth with "It was something Steve did!" Wh..w..what the hell could he have done to the suit to get this kind of end result!? Soak it in paint thinner with a follow up lacquer thinner bath? No.. because both would've eaten away at the latex. Why would he sabotage something he's paying for? I just don't understand the logic on that side of the argument. Why? Because it doesn't make any ******* sense. I have seen some of the other work done by this same person, and it's nothing like this - and to NOT stand behind or guarantee the workmanship? Come on... that's just lame and unprofessional - because when you start taking peoples' money, you become a professional, because you're being paid to provide a service. I say this because the painter has done work for other Lair members.

There's soooo many talented artists on the Lair, and I really hope that this little episode doesn't turn them off from having their suits painted by them.

Gene - that is incredibly cool of you to offer those!!! I would happily pay for shipping, or just buy them out right to help out Steve.

I will just point out the "marker" spots were in fact done by me per the advice from the painter as initially it wasn't that bad but then turned to ugly in a hurry. Also I can not ask anyone to be out of pocket for me,  I appreciate the offer to paint the hands Rob and Colm on the skins  but to ask anyone to pay something due to my misfortune I just can't do.  My hopes were to have a suit I could be proud to ownm and wear but alas it doesn't appear to be in the cards.  My apologies go out to everyone involved in one way or another Lee I'm sorry I had asked to have your mask painted over even though I did not want it done but at the time I really just wanted my stuff back. Tom for having to listen to me whine everyday about the latest report was on my paint job and anyone readin this soap opera.

I'm defeated!

This is the first time I read this thread and didn't really know what was going on and I feel bad for Steve's situation. I don't consider myself an artist, I just paint because it works like therapy and it gives me satisfaction to bring props to life.
I always look a way to better my paint work, and thru the last 3 years that I've been painting I learned from my mistakes. I painted a few suits and try different paints. Two of my past paintjobs were for DHB and for Pred4550, when I got commisioned and finsh the job I wasn't 100% happy with the paint since I used acrylic inks and even with the prosaid mix didn't work to great for me. I ship the suits and I told both of them that I was going to get info on rubber inks, learn to use them and do a whole new paintjobs at no charge for both of them. Just for materials, since I didnt charge them for my time and my lungs lol (since as many of you know this inks are toxic, don't worry i use proper ventilation but still.)
Pred4550 got his new suit painted with rubber inks and he is happy with it, no problems to my knowledge and as you can see I already started with DHB suit #2.

There is no one here that can guarantee a paint job, once i remember i was talking to Casey love and I asked him why he wouldn't paint suits for people in the Lair, and his answer was that he couldn't guarantee his work, paint  peels or rubs off, artists have to do retouching all the time in between scenes.
I didnt guarantee my work to Pred4550 or to DHB but it was the right thing to do, that after what they pay me , I felt that I couldnt leave them hanging just like that.

Now reading your post (steve) i think the artist should take responsibility for not meeting your expectations.
Like Rob and Gene that are two great member in this forum, this place if full of great people that hate to see this happening, specially since this ain't a cheap hobby.

I'm doing the commission for DHB at the moment, and I'm still waiting for parts. Maybe in between while waiting I can help you out with your suit, to try to make things right for you.
I'll send you a PM so we can talk better.

Chris

This community, despite a few bad apples, will pull together for you and help if you let them.   To see you stand proud in a finished suit thats not falling apart would be the ultimate ending to this thread.  I know it's not in your nature but I encourage you to take people up on their offers.  There's really nothing to lose at this point.
