Neat animated Rocketeer Short

Does Disney own lifetime rights on Rocketeer or something? They haven't done anything with the title since the film came out as far as I can remember.

I had to stop a few seconds in. A tribute to Dave in the style of Wii cutscenes? Oy.

I don't know about movie rights, but comic rights are with IDW right now. They're doing a 4-part series called "Rocketeer Adventures" which are a bunch of short story collections done by other writers and artists, as a tribute to Dave Stevens. I have #1 and it's pretty good so far.

Yeah, this was more campy than I would have preferred. And the soundtrack was severely lacking.

Looked more like a senior student project from DAVE school or Full Sail.

I thought the boy at the beginning was right out of Pixar's "Up". I love it for what it is... a tribute to Dave Stevens and the Rocketeer. The only complaint I have is the music. If he had incorporated the original theme, it'd be golden!

Just because we're starving, doesn't mean we'll eat anything. Thumbs down, sadly. Very little here worked for me.

There currently is discussion of bringing back the franchise as they did with Tron. Rocketeer 2!

As for what future film projects Joe Johnston would like to be involved with, he said:

“I’d love to make a sequel to The Rocketeer. The film didn’t do as well at the box office as we all hoped, but it has endured and generated a following. It was great fun and I’d love to re-explore Cliff Secord ’s world. If there are other comic-book heroes who have as human a story as Steve Rogers, I’d be interested. Too many comic-book movies rely on spectacle when the story is weak. With Captain America, we got the story firing on all cylinders first so the spectacle was fully justified. More than anything, I want everyone in the audience to sink into the alternate reality of the 1940s, enjoy the ride and come out of the theatre humming the Captain America theme. The movie is a hell of a lot of fun.”

Also now that Disney owns Marvel I see some major franchising in Marvel releasing a comic book series or graphic novel on Rocketeer! Major franchising can be done with this one.

IDW Publishing owns the Rocketeer comics franchise.

I really hope Marvel doesn't get the rights to this.

For a tribute, this was pretty fun! I think an animated series could do wonders to drum up interest, though perhaps a different style and tone from this short would be best.

Sometime back in the '90's, when Batman, the animated series was the hot action / adventure program on afternoon television, I had attempted a letter writing campaign for Disney to hop aboard with a Rocketeer animated series to compete with Warner Bros. It fizzled quickly when Disney's Gargoyles came on the air.

If Disney were to do an animated series like that today, it would most likely be aimed at a much younger audience (Kiddified) than the more mature college student type audience these earlier series had been made for.
