Just released on Max this Friday. Watched it twice so far. Won the GG for Best Animated Film, which most assumed would go to Wild Robot and up for two AAs.

For an animated film with zero dialogue there’s a lot going on. Lots to think about and talk about, but I’ll wait to see if anyone else wants to chime in.

I coulda sworn there was a thread about this already and I commented in it. Oh, well. I'll post what I said last time because I can't talk highly about this movie enough.

I absolutely adored this movie going into it cold when I saw it last month. Long takes with pinpoint,laser-precision camera movement, constantly reframing, restaging, and reblocking effortlessly from one moment to the other; no dialogue whatsoever and it's clear and concise in vision and execution. I left this movie elated and elevated seeing it; it was as close to a "pure cinema" event I've come across in recent memory.

The fact that this was made with a small team using Blender, of all things, and rendered in real time is impressive. Truly impressive. I wish the US had a nation-wide arts grants to fund endeavors like this as Europe does, but I'm glad that it exists there because this movie needed to exist. I hate that idea that animation is "for kids" and is often treated that way in the West, often pandering and condescending to the audience. This doesn't do any of that and is something for everyone to see.

Will definitely be picking up the Criterion Collection release of this when it drops on physical, for sure.

Wow. Couldn’t have said it better, all of it.

It’s not oftentimes, even when I’m really enjoying a new movie at home, that I’m not distracted by something. In theaters, I’m very disciplined, but at home I’ll pause a movie (or won’t) and grab my phone to do something trivial not to mention bathroom breaks, folding clothes ect, but not during this. There were moments I was so fully engaged, the house could have fallen down around me and I wouldn’t have noticed.

Even on subsequent viewings im finding new things I didn’t see the first time. One of which basically changed my entire perception of the film.

As far as the funding, that truly surprised me. There are so many logos at the beginning before the film event started. It was like the entire country had a hand in getting this put out. They certainly deserve the dedication and recognition.

This movie is just so beautiful and moving. It was a glorious fever dream of a movie and may well be one of my new favorites.
