NBC Passes On Wonder Woman

The good news is there was strong interest in the character, people love the character, she's iconic and deserves first class presentation as other DC characters have gotten.

I mean for chrissakes, Green freeking Lantern gets a movie before WW?????

No offense to GL fans I know it's quite popular now, but that is a 2nd tier character.
WW is part of the up front DC holy trinity!!!!

To be honest I think she is only in the DC Holy Trinity just to have a woman there. Think about it, how popular is the character today? She hasn't been featured in a movie or tv show in decades, and most people couldn't even tell you her human alias, backstory, or even what her powers are the way the average person could with Superman or Batman. Shes kind of a dead franchise.

Yeah, that tends to happen when you do NOTHING with the character and instead choose to focus on your pre-established franchises like Batman and Superman. You can't blame her franchise for not being well known if the people in charge decide to do nothing with her. If you had read any of her stories, you would know that she is more than "just the woman", but also a very different character when compared to Batman and Superman.

Even if this show was bad but still managed to air some decent worthwhile episodes, that would have at least show cased Wonder Woman to audiences who were not familiar with the character.

So, what will this likely mean for women in super hero movies?

Especially when you consider their direct-to-video movies. While not huge sellers, Wonder Woman sold more copies than Green Lantern: First Flight, but now all the focus and attention is on Green Lantern now that he not only has a movie coming out, but also an animated series and ANOTHER direct-to-video animated movie.

In fairness, I suppose that beats the "refrigerator alternative", but only by a fraction.

Looks like you'll still be stuck with Joss Whedon for female badassery. Well, once he's done with The Avengers, that is.

Well, let's not forget that Marvel has already signed Scarlet Johannson for a Black Widow movie. If we can get a decent film out of that, it might just prove to the studios that a female character can carry a profitable movie.

No, not dead at all.
Her costume changing in the comic still makes news.
The wonderful animated film got great reviews and showed how to handle the character properly.
It's all there to do, if they had the wisdom to do so.
I think it is an intimidating character for studios so it's dead to them.

Keep in mind, the execs may have been COMPLETELY justified in their decision. Could be that the pilot was just plain terrible.

Also, it might be a mistake to dismiss EVERYONE in Hollywood as incompetent because a small team of people could not pull off a good pilot. Just sayin.

There are so many factors at work here as far as relevance. They put her in long pants because in todays world its objectifying to have a female super hero running around in bikini bottoms fighting crime....but then the male audience starts complaining about the long pants. A bustier probably isnt the best top to be running through the streets fighting crime in either. Wonder Woman was created by a guy who was in to BDSM. This isnt news. She was created out of his own rather sordid fantasies. She has evolved through the years but has not been given the attention that her male counterparts have. I maintain if they had treated this character on screen more like Thor instead of straying in to this Ally McBeal nonsense they would have had a shot. This pilot looked more like Electra Woman then a serious contender. Id like to see an Alex Ross WW...a serious badass Amazon that will tear stuff up but the powers that be seem afraid to go that route. Personally I think it would be MORE interesting to see WW come to 'man's world' with the message, "Knock it off or else" as opposed to the naive WW from the 70's show. A cartoon is far different than live action and I think they would be far better off trying this as an Epic movie where she comes to lay down the law as opposed to that drivel of a script that Kelly came up with. She is very much teh female equivalent of Thor and I think they would be better served going that route.

Honestly, I'm convinced the only people who can make a TV series with a strong female superhero lead are the creators of Xena and Joss Whedon. Everyone else just seems to **** it up.

Re: Wonder Woman NOT happening

NBC strikes again... it's official, they are passing on the Wonder Woman series and it appears to be dead now. The ONE show I was looking foward to next year since Smallville is over and they ruin that . So no superhero shows in the works, I need a superhero FIX! It's reported on ksite tv.
Need a superhero fix? NO PROBLEM! Here's what ya do:
  1. On June 17th, 2011, go to your local movie theater and see GREEN LANTERN!
  2. Go see it AGAIN...
  3. ...and again...
  4. ...and again...
  5. ...are you sensing a pattern here yet? ;)
  6. As soon as Cartoon Network debuts it, start watching Green Lantern: The Animated Series! :)
  7. Rinse & repeat. ;)
See! Do you see? It's just that simple!

These are really only things that matter to people that follow the character. To the general public, shes dead.

I have nothing against the actress playing the part because it looks like she gave it everything she could, but the series looked like a Dud from the start to me, changing the established character, getting rid of her mythology and changing the costume so drastically to where it looked like a bad Cosplay suit I think Killed series before it was even released.

The general consensus sees like most people hated the costume and the series concept was just too far away from the characters origins.

Imagine how Crappy Superman would be if they drastically changed the origins and the characters jobs, it just wouldn't fly...

How bad could that pilot have been though? Anything comic book turned into anything visual makes money...and NBC will air anything for one season. Look at The Cape...nuff said. Sad, sad day this is...

Again.

Wonder Woman is out as Diana Prince, everyone knows her secret identity.

She's the CEO of a makeup or toy company, I forget which, which is specifically setup to fund her as a superhero, and done so publically.

She makes jokes about her **** popping out of her costume with her staff.

Dropped everything about the island she's from that I can't spell.

It was a steaming pile of ****.

I didn't see much in the snippets we saw and the info they released that made me think it'd work. Network exec's do make a lot of bad decisions, but they make some non-bad ones, too. This could have been a steaming pile for all we know. Unless they release the pilot publicly to try and prove othewise, we'll never know.

Plus, NBC's decision makers are in NYC aren't they? Not so much hollywood making this call.
