N7 Eagle (Mass Effect) (bunch of pics)

My second build was the N7 Eagle, again from Punished Prop's drawings. There's still a lot of room for improvement, but there was a marked improvement over my Carnifex build... the biggest being the quality of my cuts... straight lines being straight and smooth curves.

Center layer on this build was 1/2", instead of 3/4" of the Carnifex, as I wanted it to be thinner, lighter feeling than the Carnifex. I kind of had to guesstimate thicknesses on this build, as the drawings were side-view only (whereas the Carnifex had side-, front- and top-view). The next, and final, "main" layer was 1/4". On this build I cut a groove into the main body and mounted the PVC barrel into the body by a couple inches, as opposed to the Carnifex, which was simply inset into a a routed placement of about 1/4" deep. This allowed the barrel to actually be hollow somewhat deep into the body, giving it a more effective appearance.

On this build, I learned from my mistake on the Carnifex :cool , and notch-mounted the trigger. No one will be breaking it off by attempting to pull it!

After the central and secondary layers, all the rest of the build was done with a lot of little fiddly bits. Most of these were cut from my go-to thin wood... 1/8" wooden clipboard. But I wanted to have a little variety in the thicknesses of the different panels, and wanted to experiment with some new materials, and so ordered up a couple sheets of 2mm Sintra (I think that's the thickness). It gave the final build a little more visual and tactile flavor than doing them all with 1/8". Also used a little Apoxie Sculpt here to fill in the body around the top of the barrel.

I was very surprised at how nicely and easily Sintra shapes (with the Dremel) and sands down to finish. And even though it sands easily, it also seems to hold a very nice crisp edge. The detailing in the inset area in the sides of the body was a little tricky, but patience and a Dremel made quick work of it. I was especially happy with how the round, rod bit came out. It was simply a wooden dowel, with the back sanded down a bit for gluing in place, the back end sanded to a nice round finish, and a small inset carved into the side of it with the Dremel.

And there is the basically finished constructed piece next to it's older sibling. :D Next to them you can see the acrylic rod which I used for the light thing on the side of the Eagle. I'm not quite up to the point of working actual wiring and lighting into my pieces ... yet. ;)

After a nice base/primer coat of flat black, I used Rustoleum's hammered metallic finish spray on the grip. You don't wind up seeing too much of the hammered texture (a little bit on the larger flat areas, but that's it)... but it still effectively gives it a little visual interest, and also had a somewhat soft, satiny, very comfortable texture in the hand. The grey main color was pretty straight-forward, though it required quite a bit of intricate masking around the grip, fore-grip area and inset.

For the lettering, I cut stencils out of masking tape which I then positioned. The white was simply sprayed on, the red was brushed on red Testor's model enamel. The band on the lower guard, I first taped off the wide white band, sprayed it, then taped off the red band over it and painted that in with the same Testor's. You can see the cocker in the inset area, for which I simply screwed in a medium diameter socket-cap screw.

Here is the acrylic "light" rod mounted in place. I was hoping it would catch a little more light in the ends, fiber-optic style, and sort of "self-light". Unfortunately this didnt work QUITE as well as expected... it will occasionally, but only if the light hits it at JUUUUUST the right angle.

And some beauty shots. :cool The final, finished piece, next to the Carnifex. And then my first attempt at making a "scenic" shot... just used a foam mattress topper as a backdrop to give it a little more interesting setting.

Nice. I am building this too but based on a pepakura model. Right now it is on hold because the breather helmet comes first.

AWESOME JOB man!!! And way cool use of the mattress for a background. Kudos!

Sintra is the absolute best for those stupid little details that game designers like to toss in. I really wish I'd played around with it before I got my M-27 done the way I did it. I could have lessened my build by a week or more.

If you don't have one already, I'd suggest getting yourself a little paper guillotine for cutting the stuff. Also, there's 1-2-3 blocks that are absolutely indispensable for building with it.

Now you must learn the wonderful benefits of using pink sheet insulation foam instead of MDF for the core to make it easier on your arm to carry around Con's all day (Or be like me and tough it out...then cry like a baby for 3 days afterward because you can't lift your arm high enough to feed yourself...). :D

Can't wait to see what you build next!

Thanks - it was a meager attempt, could've used more definition... definitely better lighting, but wanted to make a quick attempt
Got the idea from chinbeard's photography tips video. He mentioned using simple plastic panels from Home Depot. So I just looked for something interesting on hand.

Yeah, the Sintra is nice stuff. Though I do like my clipboards for thin bits too... just because it is nice and solid, and readily available (I haven't found any place local to buy Sintra - that's its biggest downside really). Are these what you are referring to by 1-2-3 blocks? I'd never heard of these before. Do you mean primarily for getting a nice straight cut, or ?

I've watched a lot of Da Frontline Trooper's videos building with that stuff. He does some amazing work with it! I wonder about durability though. I don't want to worry about dropping something on a piece and having to worry about it getting crushed. Fortunately, right now I'm just on small pieces...but if - sorry, when ;) - I move up to rifles, I guess I will have to figure something out.... maybe putting hollows inside the body.

Can't wait to see what you build next!
Thanks! :D Current build is the Talon on my FB... which is from Sorenzo Props' drawings... after that, I'm kinda thinking of trying my hand at making my own drawings for something larger. I'm thinking maybe the Graal spike thrower. Don't know yet... all depends on how much time I have too, right now a project at work is killing my free time. :thumbsdown Eventually need to get a costume together too though... figure out how to do that armour stuff you've done so well with your Cerberus!

I'm fortunate enough to have a massive plastics distributor just down the road. For the stuff you'll need/want, I'd check with local sign makers...I get most of my little stuff for free just for offering to sweep up their shop floor. You'd be surprised what they throw out.

Yeah, that's the stuff. I use them for gluing 90 degree pieces of pretty much anything together. If (hehehe...when :cool ) you get into more complex builds keeping your right angles consistent becomes a pain in the tookuss...Those little wonders keep you moving on with other things while stuff drys into perfect right angles. As much as I love MDF and hardboard, they don't hold a crisp straight edge like plastic will.

I've started playing with it on cores instead of using laminated 1/2" sheet MDF to bulk out the center of my weapons. I seal the exposed edge with heavy duty sandable wood glue, then back fill with glazing putty. Seems to be holding up fine and I can always add bondo to build it up if I need to. I shaved almost 4lbs off my second generation M-27 (still a massive WIP) just by switching the core out to pink insulation foam board. The only down side is having to be careful not to sand too much, but repeating the wood glue trick on any exposed bits seems to work fine. I still do all my exterior bits in MDF and plastic since I've yet to find a way to get good detail to stick in foam.

If you need some assistance starting out your own blueprinting, just let me know. I've been learning InkScape the hard way and I'd be happy to give you the condensed version of how to make your own drawings rather than suffering through like I did the first few times...It's only as difficult as tracing when you really get down to it if you're just doing it for your own builds.

Eventually need to get a costume together too though... figure out how to do that armour stuff you've done so well with your Cerberus!

The worst part about foam is learning how to get nice seams and transitions. There's no better teacher for that than just doing it.
Looking back was I little too ambitious on my first build? Maybe...But hey...No guts, no glory!

Great build, love the way builds just get better each time! Keep on creating!

Nice work! I do love my hand cannons in ME, can't wait to make my own soon :).

Thanks guys! Just finished the Talon; need to get a write up of that done. My favorite pistol in the game. It is great to watch your builds improve each time.

Killtime, you have one picked & planned already?

Yes I will be doing the same as yourself, a Carnifex is my plan. Simple and straight forward for my build, just made up the blue prints today actually. Sadly at work (I work away a week at a time) so I won't be able to start until I get home.

Might make a Tempest or Locust after that :).

Nice, locust! Was gonna modify my hurricane to make the locust not too dissimilar from each other!

Cool! yeah, the Carnifex is a nice simple one to start with. B) I'm just wishing now that I had painted mine as a Paladin instead... SUCH a better gun! lol

The Locust is a cool gun. Always liked that 'tink-tink-tink' sound it makes while firing. I've done three pistols now, so I'm looking at trying at something bigger too - thinking a Hurricane, Graal spike thrower of maybe Hydra missile launcher.

(Yeah, it sucks how life gets in the way of hobby time, doesn't it? ;) )

I would love to make the Vindicator or Mattock :3 I'm also tossing up to see if I dare make a Titanfall Titan.... one thing at a time!
