My Ultimate Doctor Who prop

I don't know about the US, but in the UK we have a Tardis money box with a light that flashes in time with the sound effect. Might be worth a look (try ebay).

Justin,

What a superb project. Great workmanship and finishing. As Barry said - it looks just like the real thing! You should be VERY proud of that!

Thank you all for the kind words, and I apologize for not replying sooner! I totally forgot I posted this here and I have more pictures to share!

I still have weathering to do, and I am looking forward to it, so the colour will deepen quite a bit, but I was not happy with the old colour so started with the one you will see and sets it up well for the weathering job, which as I said will darken it quite a bit.

What I plan to do is take what is left of the darker blue and water it down and give it a dark blue wash and then after that go on with the black to really accent some detail...I THINK it will work...

Anyway!

Some pictures of it up, though I have a level problem, its up now and I am very happy with it! I hope you guys like it as well!

Since I last posted alot has been done!

Windows were finished and I brought it home:

Then I set to get the roof filled and painted, and it worked out great! the fibreglass tape and plastic wood really worked well, and Sorry Kylash, I had to repaint the lamp, but it still looks great!

Then I worked on painting the signs, and repainting the whole thing, then recruited my wife to help put some second coats on it as well. Then I stole my little brother and he helped me put teh walls, posts and signs up:

He then helped me get the roof up and on and I must say....amazing!! I had to jump into my costume and though my hair is too long I had to have a little fun!

We also rigged a spot light inside JUST to see! :)

What do you all think?

EXCELLENT JOB! I really like the work. You should bring it to DragonCon this year if you can fit it in the car. ;)

One suggestion, it looks like the real thing has something similar to string lights that are put just behind the windows. Have you considered putting some of those up?

You can kind of see the lights in this pic but I know there are better shots out there: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/gallery/tardis/1024/04.jpg

Looks real good. It's great to see stuff like this built by the people who truly enjoy their props. I bet that will be the hit of the conventions in your neck of the woods.

Now between you and me - how many times did you hit your thumb with the hammer?

Thank you for the compliments Kerr!

As for the lights, they are actually 4 flouresent lights per window with foil behind it in a makeshift light box.

However I am planning on using the light ropes and tape up the corners to give the illusion pf a similar set up....just need to work out the money aspect and the 4 top signs are far more important ;) Already planned though :)

As for DC, not in the cards this year....this big blue box took all the free cash for awhile ;)

Erik! Thanks to you this was even possible!! A number of changes to your plans, but without them we would not have gotten this far!

Hammer to thumb...once...and thats because I was holding someting wrong when John swung....ouch!

Now Ijust need to find someone to get me a device to make it off/on/flash in time with an on board sound effect!
I have neon light tubes in my PC that have a card that flashes them in time with sounds. It takes up an expansion slot, but doesn't plug into the mother board. With a spare power supply you could hook it up and the sound from the TARDIS would make your lights go.

Will have to check some options out and hit up some tech guys....I am but a humble designer....

So I weathered the TARDIS up with a mixure of water and black paint...it was hit and miss but check it out:

that's so sweet. It is staying outside?

It makes me wish the tardis I started in highschool ended up completed instead of a pile of wood in my friend's garage.

You'd make a good Tom Baker doctor with the long hair!

Now I know why the Jedi Costume approvals for the Rebel Legion have gotten bogged down the last couple of months. :angel

Seriously though, great work, Justin. :)

How heavy is the final prop? Can you disassemble to move it? Especially if you plan on taking it to conventions or rather inside conventions? Hope you can find an indoor location for it to protect against the elements - the sun is its worst enemy.

Excellant job!

Apologies I thought I responded here!

The TARDIS will be an outdoor prop, it just looks most impressive in the backyard :)

kimncris, the hair gets chopped in October, and with that a more accurate 10 suit in the works!

Loreen.....mayyybe ;)

The prop is really havy as it should be, but it comes apart pretty simply and easily transportable provided big enough transport! :)

Thank you all for the compliments!

That is just a wonderful job on the Tardis! What a great thing to make. And it's such a cool piece to take pictures with. Love the costume too. My son wants to be the Doctor for Halloween. Any advice on the costume side?

That is very cool. Nice job!

If I did one, I had always thought I would put it out in the yard as you have done but now I realize that I would want it to be against a building (the garage, for example) so that it was actually the entrance to a larger structure.
I like what you did with the large photo image inside it too.
The weathering will look better and better as it ages naturally in the sun, you touch it up, it ages some more...
