My Studio Scale TIE X-1 Advanced

Well, it's not much progress, but it's something...

Right?! It's ridiculous! I got mine about 10 years ago, back when they were reasonable. Now, not only are they stupidly exspensive, but I can't even find any.

I made a little more progress. One half of one half of the fantail is done. (If it's not gray, it's not permanently attached.)

Unfortunately, when I cut the styrene out for the fantail, I didn't quite get the shape right, and it didn't match up to the pylons very well. I should have glued it on to the ship and then scribed, but I got impatient and scribed the lines in before I attached it. So I ended up having to glue it on, fill the gap, and rescribe a lot of the lines. I also ended up moving one of the "maintenance pits" after the fact. I'll have to move the mirror image one later.

Beautiful work!

Finished the wingstar for the Port wing today. I don't know why, but it has these weird areas built up with Bondo. And only on the Port wing.

I've been wondering about this as well. This is probably because the port wing has two versions, one with battle damage from the collision with the wingman. They would have needed to remove and replace one or both of the inflected panels with the damaged bits. The bondo might not have even been there when the model was shot for the movie.

EDIT: I realised my inference above about not being shot in the film is more likely wrong than not. It's simply a product of needing two different versions of the port wing without needing to cast them. As far as I can tell, the Vader TIE wings are not cast. Possibly, the undamaged panel(s) needed to be added back to the model for additional shots or re-shots and the bondo was used to shore them up.

EDIT2: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m14344844323
Well, not sure about my inference at all now! Looks like the damaged port wing was made as a separate, replaceable part. So, potentially the bondo has something to do with making two versions of this wing, but the stories I have told above are probably not quite right.

The top half is done. I'm sure I got every part in the small maintenance pits wrong, but close counts on this one. It could take me another twenty years figuring those out. Of course, the big maintenance pits aren't going to be much better. Haha
Now I'm laying out all the scribe lines for the bottom. I still have to fit the "droid strips" top and bottom and do all the chipping on the bottom.
