My screen accurate gaderffii stick

As the title says, I am willing to create a screen accurate one. So, basically, as I did with the respirator and other parts in the past, I created a 3D model to play with. I estimated that the pinnacle head in about 11cm (maximum external) in diameter and 3.5cm tall. I took an idea from a friend that told me about build it parting from discs. So I did it. This is a just a model, final one will be done with spikes that resembles panganus fruit spikes.

Later, I create a dented disc and did the same:

Looks cool righ?

Any feedback about measurements will be welcome, as well any suggestion. You can check my progress here:

Once I finish the model and the simulations, will laser cut this in MDF, and will glue the small spikes all around. What do you think? will subtract enough from each disc to keep the measurement. Each spike should be 3mm tall, more or less.

Looking forward to seeing your results. Mine is an original from that place over in Fiji from way back when, but it's not as accurate as I would like...

Looks cool so far. I've seen a lot of less-than-accurate gaffi sticks out there. I'm excited to see a good one. :cool

I don't mind at all, but I'm not sure I know exactly what part you're talking about... :confused

The diameter and height of the pinnacle will be fine. Want to compare screen used vs a real one.

in the other hand, estimated that the "spike" is about 10,7cm long. So I created a new model to include both parts:

Not sure how I will do this one, but I am sure that will be a different part and will assemble them together. I also aware that will have to bend the spike a little bit. Did not calculate that yet.

Apologies for the late reply.

The measurements on this are roughly 5.25" in diameter and 3.5" in depth, not including the spike itself which is about 3.8".

I don't know what the original, screen-used dimensions were so I could hardly recommend using the measurements from mine as a reference. Try as we might back when these were being made for us in Fiji, I don't know of anyone other than Tom Spina who got one that was very close to the original. I'd really love to have one myself but it seems that the Fiji folks aren't even responding to enquiries anymore...:unsure

Good luck with your build and for whatever help it might offer, here are a couple of pics:

And as an FYI, a pic of the original to show that the spike is not centered, but rather tapered downward.

Thanks, and nice war club. I know your dimensions are far away from screen used one, but I have been reading some museum and auctions websites descriptions looking for a pattern. It seems that there are some measurements they respected. Average diameter is around 11 cm. Which is great, cause screen used one is very close to that.

And I noticed that the spike is bended. Did not calculate the exact angle yet.

Recalculated the pinnacle height to match the screen used one. Previous version was 32mm, now It is almost 40mm. Seems very close right?

Judging from just the photo, I'd say so.
Still need another validations, but I will go with these measurements.

Diego you're going Tusken on us?! :eek That's so.... un-Jedi! :lol I'm sure it will be great. I really enjoyed putting together my gaffi. Take a look here... Picasa Web Albums - Tony Perez - Tusken Raider...
Yeah, but don´t worry, I am still being Obi-Wan. And GOOD looking gaderffi prequel stick. Wish mine end up that way. And, GOOD looking mask too.

OK, now that I finished the moisture trap, will start doing the gaderffii stick. This is the plan. The hollow part will be 3d printed in resin.

and I am going to use those small wood beads to glue all around the hollow base.

the hand carved look will be achieved with some tool. Hammering each one of them to remove some material or deform them. Keep you posted guys.

Got the base part from shapeways. It is really amazing how this works.

Unfortunately, wood beans I bought won't do any good. So I am looking for some kind of seed to replace them. Keep you posted guys.

I finally found something good to recreate the carved spikes look: Gravel.

I separated bigger ones from small or mediums ones and glued them to the printed 3d part:

Now, that they were glued, I have to fill the spaces with a product called pastina. Basically a kind of powder used in construction to fill gaps.

Wow, the gravel idea is a really brilliant one! It really captures the look, can picture that painted. Prop building at it's best.

Went in another direction and sculpted the base. Just like the screen used totokia:

Have to fix the connection between the head and the spike and do something similar. Keep you posted.
