My Rocketeer Jetpack

Abso-freaking-lutley beautiful Adam! I knew that the pack needed to be dulled down but I had no idea that it would make that much of a difference. Can't wait to see it finished.

That looks amazing! By far the nicest finish on a rocket pack I've seen yet. Can't wait to see it complete. Wow.

That looks amazing! Taking the shine down has worked wonders.
Always been one of my favorite props and now I've seen this, I don't think I could be happy with one that didn't have the plating.

I was an idiot and didn't take pictures before I hit it with the spray paint. THAT was the key to warming it up and bringing out the detail. The difference before and after was remarkable. Because you never get rid of all the paint.
Makes it pop, makes it three dimensional. I've got some LED lights and I'm going to work out the flaps so that they give off a red/orange/blue rocket glow. I'm also going to add some amber lights inside, and around the fan. Did I already mention that?

I've wanted one of these packs forever. If you're on the fence about it, get it, I've rarely seen castings this good.

One thing though: the plating on an object like this takes a while, and it can build up in places you didn't expect. Added almost 1/4" of metal to where the flaps attach. Had to sand and cut a bunch to make the flaps fit. And chrome is HARD. Trying to figure out how I want to display it, I might just have it attached to the harness and slung over one of my chairs in the mancave, like I just landed...

I don't know much about these...talked about 'em a bit with Bob Lindenmeyer years ago...I think his shells were, what? Fiberglass or the like? I think he said the Hero was simple silver paint in layers, rubbed. So I've always thought it was a fiberglass shell, too.

So the fact that yours is nickel plated has me wondering what the parent material is. Is that some form of composite that can be plated; or did you actually handcraft that puppy from sheet metal?

It's beautiful either way. :thumbsup

VBR,

Pat

My jaw literally dropped seeing this. I actually liked the chrome look too, but I don't think you could get any closer to realistic than you did with that paint job and finish.

This is a dream prop of mine (actually #1 on my dream prop list), but I have to agree with a comment. I don't think I could ever be happy unless mine turned out just like this. Dangit. :)

The base material was an ACME kit. Urethane resin. The way it's done is that they spray a conductive copper paint on it, then they copperplate it, and THEN they chrome plate it. It certainly makes the sucker heavy.

I'll throw it on a scale but it would get tiring in a hurry to wear this puppy.

Adam, that is beautiful!

The Rocketeer is one of my favourite movies, and this rocket pack is on my 'one day' list.

Can't wait to see the whole thing in all its glory.

I might just have it attached to the harness and slung over one of my chairs in the mancave, like I just landed...

.....AND I AM SURE I SPEAK FOR ALL OF US WHEN I ASK.... WHEN IN THE HECK ARE WE GOING TO SEE PICTURED OF YOUR MANCAVE/COLLECTION?"
:confused:lol

I am saving a full mancave tour for later in the year. More like the fall. Some renovations happening with it.

Nice to hear that the chrome process over resin came out so tough! A big prop/costume piece like that is just asking to get bumped around and messed up normally.

That came out beautiful! Wow...just wow.

Are you going to give the flaps the same (flame) paint treatment you did with the hose lines?
