My Red Hood Build ;) Getting close to done!!

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

i need to look into that scissor hinge... that looks about perfect for this application ;).

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

Right on, glad to be of assistance. As far as the collar goes I'm thinking either wire that hooks over my ears and would be hidden with a foam insert, or an EVA foam collar piece similar to what they do with the Mass Effect armors. It could be easily hidden with a turtle neck, but I haven't yet figured a way to snap it on and off. Possibly magnets (2-4 on the sides to distribute the weight, and one in the back to keep it from moving front to back) depending on whether or not I could find a way to make it stick well enough. Feel free to use any ideas I post, it will save me the trial and error.

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

Wicked - I was also thinking about the separation factor, and i agree that magnets appear to be a winner, but i was also looking into something else ;). My idea, (that i have not yet tested, but currently working on), involves mini electromagnets. i figure normal magnets might work for display, but i worry that in a situation where its being worn they might not offer enough strength. My idea is to make miniature electronic magnets to attach to a small power source in the helmet... when they are needed it would be as simple as turning them on. this was an idea i had with another project im currently working on besides this one (not exactly a comic thing). - Allfate

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

Ok, after several layers of bondo, a lot of sanding, and about 2 tons of pink dust i came to this. The largest issue im having is getting the lines on the sides of the seperation to be perfect. i know in the pictures it looks a lot better than it actually is, but im going to work more on that tonight after the temp outside cools off a bit. We live in a 2 bedroom apartment and one room is the office... that leaves me with the 6'X5' balcony for a shop ;), and wow its hot out there. if anyone has segestions about getting the lines straight please let me know. I found a duct tape/ bondo way that isn't too bad, but a lot of clean up. And at long last... my updated pics: ;)

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

It looks like it's getting really close to being done. Looks good! The only thing I can think of is to mask of the section that doesn't need work with masking tape and build out the section that does. When the bondo is setting up and solid enough to handle it should be easy to separate from the masking tape.

Ironically, that is what I was doing with the duct tape, but masking tape should be a lot easier to remove. I also put it on the inside to prevent too much material from squeezing through the crevice. I've also got a few pics of it separated that I'll upload in a short bit.

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

Maybe you could cut a black rubber automotive glass gasket to go around the outside and use a hairdryer to shape it. Then the crack won't show as uneven, but it'll have enough give to close.

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

excellent job by the way, looking awesome. The bondo and sanding is very good. I did the same, BlackKaos file is awesome, hats off to you dude.
I've tapered the 2peices as one, but should have used support before resinning, as I've spent the night using a heat torch to widen the face so it fit over my big head(it did fit on my head before resinning).
I'm going to cut the eye's out as I've made foam sheet and aviator lenses to fit it when its all done. pics soon as it has to be finished for Batman Live next week. look forward to seeing when its finished

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

I myself found the same issue, but i'm planning on a slightly elaborate opening... partly b/c my head is bigger also, and just why not?? ;) This is a fantastic file... i wast thinking about doing the other Red Hood from BlackKaos also. i remember as a kid when they killed robin, but i didnt know until recently about the red hood... i really like the idea of this character. seems kinda a Punisher meets the Kingpin type of guy, and i can respect a man who doesn't mind getting his hands a bit dirty to better the rest. Maybe the bat could take a few lessons ;)

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

mcoatsey - Thank you very much for the compliment! I love it that you are taking my file and adding your own touch. I can't wait to see the finished helmet! Please post pics on your own or another thread, or send me pics of the finished helmet. Even progress pictures. I love seeing progress pictures, especially when its one of my files.

Allfate- I agree with mcoatsey in saying you are doing an excellent job with the bondo. Looks really good! I definitely agree with you about the Red Hood character. I also have recently learned of the character from being on this forum and the more I learn of him the better I like him. The Red Hood has grown in to one of my favorite characters. I just bought some fiberglass and resin today to start my own red hood helmets. I plan on doing both of my helmet files because, to be honest I like both concepts. Which the first is from Batman:Under the Red Hood. The second is a mix between the new concept drawings and Darth Movado's helmet concept which is very good to say the least. I have saved a couple more design concepts of the Red Hood helmet which I like and might do variations of myself.

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

Helmet bodyfilled and partially sanded, need to fill out eyes abit, using my RedHood statue as reference

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

pics in other thread and my album. Does anyone know how you can have the same pics in different posts? I get an error already used jpeg

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

Sorry for the delay in updates... ive been dealing with a few symmetry issues that ive been trying to correct, but work has been kicking me a bit lately also. Im going to try to have more pics up either today or tomorrow, but im also getting ready to pick out my red paint... this part im really excited about. I think i might get several and see what the opinion here at the RPF is on choice of colors ;). what do you all think?

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

I think it it looks terrific as of the last set of pictures. How is your field of vision with the eyes spaced so far apart?

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

Yes actually ;). Ive been working to try to correct a few issues I was having... it turned out that my faceplate was not supported properly. The issue i was having was partly that the faceplate was actually spreading out with the pressure and causing it to widen. I restricted the faceplate with duct tape and added another layer of fiberglass and resin to the inside of the faceplate. After letting it cure completely it corrected the issue and i continued with the symmetry issues. After a bit more work i put a coat of primer on it so i could see better where i needed more work. These pictures are from last night after the primer. Oh ya, I also removed the eye section also, but i plan on putting in lenses after the completion. And now... the pictures:

And last but not least... I went to the local auto parts store when i needed more bondo and searched the options for color. I didnt manage to find as much variety as i expected, but i did find one that almost matched what i was thinking of. So, what do you all think of this color? The flash washed the color out, but this is the best representation i could get.

So what do you all think?

Re: My Red Hood Build ;) More Pictures Added.

I think that it's looking really good! The red, even though it washed out from flash, looks good. I figured you would have taken out the eye section and would be putting in lenses... cause that's what I'm going to do with mine. I also see a notch in the back of the bottom half of the helmet in the second picture. Is that for a hinge system or something?
