My New Iron Man Helmet 23/10 Eye Lights!

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 11/10First casting pics

who told you that silicone doesnt shrink? LOL
if you look on any silicone MSDS you'll see that it shrinks
all materials do to some degree as they cure and age

same with people for that fact LMAO!!

it was amazing to see the real thing in person
it opened your eyes to how much can be hidden when done properlly

that photo as your muse is heavily modified around the eyes
because at that angle you would see the eye cutouts and the double
sockets

and since its only 3% smaller that is not enough to keep it from being wearable, it will be very easy for someone to get one of them and mold it and pop a wearable version

I would love to post all the pics I took but I signed something that said I wouldn't otherwise I would put up a pic showing you how they did it

but atleast on the SS they kept the double set sockets

how they mixed hard fiberglass pieces with soft urethane pieces and the clothe undersuit were so well combined that if your standing 15 feet away they combine perfectly to pull the design together

its only when your up close that you are surprised as to what pieces are hard and what are soft beyond the obvious choices

the one I saw was a partial hero as the wrist rocket was functional on it
trigger the servo and the plate pulls back and up reveling a rocket tip

I have heard a rumor that the morrons over at bronze armory might get the chance to offer copies of the suit straight out of the original molds with authorization from SWStudios.... I doubt its a real rumor.... more then likely that they will just recast a fanmade suit and say its real, just like they do with all their stuff

anyways

what I didnt know till today is that there were different head designs for the iron monger and that it was changed at the last second
makes me wonder what other versions there were of the mark 1 2 3

I appricate your comments but the thing about the silicone shrinking doesnt really hold water.

True, all materials shrink but silicone shrinkage is so minimal is really doesnt come in to it, hence the reason it is the main material used to accuratley reproduce things. I have it on good authority that the ss bust was made smaller for the reason i mentioned but this is all going off topic so ill leave it there.

I have the first helmet painted except for the back plate as i can out of candy. the eyes are now cast and i,, be experimenting with the number of led's and positioning.

I should have pics up of the complete finished piece by friday

Nice Job, even though I'd use a darker gold.
This helmets looks very good!

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 16/10 Painted!

Looks very nice! Can' wait to see the Mark II in all its riveted glory!

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 16/10 Painted!

Stunning, personally I think its the best of the fan mades so far, with no disrespect meant to others :thumbsup

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 16/10 Painted!

not to get into a debate over something so lite
but its a fact that silicone shrinks
check your MSDS and you'll find a shrinkage of probably
.03%

not much but it shrinks~
fact is fact

if you want your brass to look more like the real deal
paint the base black
then go over the brass with an aluminum
paint
then go over that with a semi transparent brass

then let it fully cure
once its cured
in one even smooth straight stroke
go from top to bottom with a scotch bright pad

this will give you the same finish that was used to give the
hero suit its brass look

thats the best was to get a great brushed look artificially

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 16/10 Painted!

That's looking great Fettster. I've been waiting for someone to sculpt one of these that I thought looked right. I think my wait may be over!

thanks for the brass tip but you cant beat the real thing so the next one will have a cold cast brass face plate.

as for the silicone, 0.03% sound about right but its not 3% as you first stated which is probably where the confusion started, 0.03% really isnt worth mentioning.

bygones

Well, it's not 3%, it's 0.03% or that's what he said! That's practically 0% So I think that the silicone is the best way!

And awesome work fettster, I love that Iron Man helmet. :)

PS: Cold cast will be the best :love

I never said silicone shrinks 3%
I said

"and since its only 3% smaller that is not enough to keep it from being wearable, it will be very easy for someone to get one of them and mold it and pop a wearable version"

the materials can shrink also you know

anyways, if the sideshow is not from the original molds then they lied
if they took the cad and made a new helmet then thats false advertising
isn't it??

either way, its the best thing out there to date

as for you doing a brass face thats kinda cool
wondering what kinda weight it will add to it once its
got a thin layer on it

then when you brush it , it should pretty spot on

what about plating one in nickle and polishing it for the Mark II look?

Speaking of, the MarkII that SS is offering if bigger then the hero MARKIII by what looks to be about 5%-10% from the one I held at SDCC, it wasn't made mention of during the film that it was a different size though??

I think this is the quote that states your shrinkage theory
"its also
slightly smaller then the original by about about 1/16 overall which is
only the shrinkage from the silicone"

you then go on to say its 3% smaller, im not sure 1/16 translates to 3% but this is where the confusion started. Im not having a go at you, im just trying to clear it up.

as for the sideshow piece, i agree with you about what is stated on sideshows website but i trust the information i was given so how about we just agree to disagree?

I actually hope I have been mis-informed about the sideshow bust as mine should be here any day now.

The brass wont really add much weight to the helmet, it will only be a thn layer about 2mm thick and will only cover the face plate a chin area, my helmet is cast really light anyway so it will be ok.

The Nickle plating idea is a good one, im not familiar with the process tho

Re: My New Iron Man Helmet 16/10 Painted!

Hey I found this from yahoo that shows the inside of the faceplate for those that want to try and make it look more authentic or cool.
