My new Firefly Mal pistol--finished??

Hi all,
Just wanted to throw some pics up of my recently completed Mal pistol from Firefly. This was one of Phillipe's resin kits with the added brass thumbscrews and real wood grips. I purchased it from another member here with 99% of the clean up already done. I'm just anal about my prop kits, so I spent a total of maybe 45 minutes with some fine grade sandpaper going over a couple of the seams here and there.

Now, I'm primarily a "Star Wars guy," but since my [late] discovery of Firefly/Serenity, I've become a big fan, and out of all the props on the show, I feel this one is the most iconic. It's definitely not your standard, run-of-the-mil sci-fi sidearm! It has that strange "retro future" look to it, and I just really like it a lot. :) This will probably be my only prop that I do from this franchise. It was a nice change of pace from my SW props!

Here are a couple of pics.
This is an overall shot of the pistol. The colors are really hard to capture. I painted this in a multilayer paintjob, starting with a flat black base coat, covered by bronze.

The paints I used were spray cans from the Design Master series. They make a product called Mess Master, which is a sprayable compound that softens the base coat slightly, and allows additional coats to 'float' on the surface (their description.)

Once the bronze coat was dry, I used this Mess Master, and then put on a very light coat of Navy Blue, which did break up and take on a pretty mottled appearance. Then another coat of Mess Master, followed by a color called Walnut Wood Tone. Another coat of Mess Master, then a final misted coat of flat black. *Whew!* :lol

Another, closer shot.

I gave the whole thing 24 hours to day, then went back with some 'Treasure Gold' brass. Treasure Gold is a product like Rub 'n Buff, but it comes in a little plastic pot instead of a tube. I used the Firefly, The Official Companion book for reference pics, and used my high-tech index finger to apply the brass. :thumbsup I tried to match the pics as closely as I could.
I also used some Pewter color for the strap around the grips and trigger/trigger guard.

Here's the other side of the gun.

For the wood grips, I used 2 coats of Minwax Royal Walnut Satin stain. Then rubbed them slightly with steel wool.

To attach the grips, I went to Ace and picked up a couple of button head hex screws and a thread insert. I screwed the thread insert into the resin grip frame, then screwed the grips into that. So they're totally removable if need be.

Oh yeah, the only other mod I made was to reposition the safety lever. The person I bought it from mentioned that it had been repaired after he did some clean up around it, and when it arrived, I decided to remove it completely to put it in the 'fire' position. I sliced it off with a razor saw, and mounted it to a small piece of .010" styrene, then sanded it to shape. That way, since the part was already cracked, it wouldn't break completely.

So that's it. :) It's a beautiful cast of a really cool looking gun.
Now my question is, being that I'm not nearly as familiar with Firefly as I am with SW, is it finished??? I've seen some pics that make the backstrap/trigger/trigger guard much more 'steel' looking. Does it need some more pewter rubbed onto those areas?

Thanks for looking! And for any input. :thumbsup

Fantastic paint job! Very convincing, I am quite impressed. =)

As far as your "silver" bits, I am almost positive that the trigger and trigger guard are a silver color, as they are the only visible parts of the revolver that was underneath the brass outer casing. I'm not so sure about the little thing on the butt of the handle (is that what you're calling a "backstrap"? I really know nothing about gun terminology), but part of me feels like that one should be silver as well.

Thanks, Patattack!
Just today, I picked up the 'Companion' Volume 2, and it has a picture which shows the bottom of the gun more clearly.
I think it does need some more silver on those parts.

And the backstrap is the part of the frame that shows between the grips.

Brilliant work! I love the paint job, and you've done a great job on the wood grips. Add a couple of silver touch-ups and you'd be set.

Again, brilliant job. :thumbsup

Yup... paint it steel from the front of the trigger guard, trigger, and all the way down the grips and up again and stop when you reach about 1" from where the grips stop at the bevel near the aim sight.

Otherwise... that's one heck of a paint job. I love it! :thumbsup

WOW that was quick Eric!

Glad to see it went to the right person who got it done!

Looks great!

Thanks, all!
I will be going back to redo the 'steel' portions of the frame.

Andy,
You did an awesome job removing those resin grips! Made life a lot easier on my end! :) :thumbsup

Thanks, all!

Thanks! Nothing a dremel, wood rasp, old pocketknife used as a crude plane, and a sanding block couldn't handle... :confused

OK, did some more pewter on the trigger/guard and grip frame.
I took these pics outdoors under more natural light.

Now it's done. :)
Thanks for the input, guys! :thumbsup

The work you put into it really does show. Great job. Love seeing these!! Thank you for sharing the work!

Hi all,
One last update on my Mal pistol.
I like to case my props. I think it makes for a nicer display, and it helps keep that bad, bad dust off my props! :lol

I wanted to make something that would set this gun apart from my SW props. In keeping with the 'Old West' philosophy of the show, I wanted to make a wooden case rather than my standard clear acrylic cases.

Now, I'm no woodworker! Gimme a hunk of resin and I'll build me a blaster. . . but I don't have a lot of experience working with wood. I decided to build a simple box that I could slide a piece of clear plexi into. I got some basswood in 3" and 4" widths and built a 16" x 7" open sided box. I just picked that size based on the size of the pistol. I added some very thin strips just inside the front to make a slot for the plexi to slide into, and finished it off with some pre-made trim I got at JoAnn's. (Man! That place has a lot of cool stuff! :thumbsup) I put everything together with butt joints. . . I know, what an amateur, right? :) But I covered the corners with some 3/8" brass angle trim.

For the backing, I got some matte paper in a pale blue-gray, and cut it to fit. To support the gun, I found some birch dowels that kind of flared out, almost like clothes pegs. I just marked where they should go, drilled 2 holes, and glued them in.
I finished it with some Walnut stain. The same stain I used on the pistol grips.

And here she sits! On display with the rest of my props. Shiny!

This was a fun weekend project. If I were to do another wood case, I think I'd actually draw out a plan before I start cutting and gluing stuff together. :lol
Thanks for looking!

wow thats awesome!
i think the backing needs to be a darker color tho, but the case looks great, and the gun is spot on perfect!
The best mal replica out there......... so far........ hehehehe

Thanks, all! This was one of my rare forays outside the realm of Star Wars.
Firefly is just such a unique show I had to do a prop from it.

Beautiful piece and great display. Want to sell it?? hehe.... ;)

Sure, I'll sell it. . . for one miiiiiiiiiillion dollars! :lol
