After getting a good look at a baby tusken at FX Show a week ago, I thought it would be something that my daughter would enjoy, so this weekend I put one together using an old doll of hers. Actually, it only took me about 24 hours to make, using material I already had. Here are some progress photos:
Yikes! I painted the face black so the eyes and mouth would be dark if any peaked through. I made the horns by cutting wood dowls to size and putting each piece in a drill. I then spun them against sand paper. That worked quite well, giving them the tapered look.
AAAAAAAH!!!!! Have you ever seen anything so creepy looking? I made the cheek tusks similar to how I made the horns. I put them in a drill, but this time I pressed the ends against a metal file to carve it down on the tips. I used a small bit to drill holes in the ends. The triangle mouth area was built up with sculpty, along with the "nose". I used Rub 'n Buff to make everything silver.
That's better! The final look. I made the eyes from PVC pipe. I heated them up with a heat gun and pressed a cone-shaped piece of wood I have into them to spread them out for the tapered look. I wrapped the head, arms and legs in small strips of torn fabric, just like I did for my full size mask. I had some old leather left over from the full size mask that worked for Tusken Jr.'s mouth. I sewed up a little inner robe that buttons in the back and used some leftover Ralph Lauren Estate blanket material for the outer robe. Mist some brown dye over it for weather and it's done! I tried to make the "aerator" but that was the only piece I could make with material I had laying around. I couldn't find a suitably sized cylinder. I'll pic up a larger dowel next time at Home Depot.
My daughter loves it. She carried it around all day and took it to the store. I think I may make another!
