Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress

When it comes to the details, they're not at all alike, but in general, or at least overall....I think they both share a common denominator.

Sharp dressed men. :lol

EDIT - And the fact that I do both of 'em. :lol :p ;)

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress

Savy - I sent you an email to your yahhoo addy with a MH site - I just threw up a ton of HUGE ref photos for you

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress 12-09-09 Shoes DONE!

The shoes are DONE! So this means that 1/8th of my costume is completed!:confused

Finished the metal toe tips and added shoe laces.

Placing and hammering in each and every cobbler tack. That was a pain!
IMG_1065.jpg

Square toe tips and my attempt to recreate the engraving. I know I could have gone to Tandy Leather and purchased a leather stamp of the design but I couldn't justify the cost. A Dremel is a costumers best friend.
IMG_1066.jpg

I tried an angle shot to cut down on the shine on the toe tips. I used bronzing paint to dull down the shine but it doesn't really show with the flash turned on.

Trying to match up the detail of the engraving.

Again NO images of the outer part of the left boot so we had to "wing" it!

My custom design as lifted from Tim Burton's drawing.

Wearing of the boots and pairing with the socks!
Mad Hatter Feet!

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress 12-09-09 Shoes DONE!

I use a straight razor blade and cut a "V" shaped grove into the leather. Pull out the little strip of leather that is cut out and pull the leather apart to expose the underbelly.

Use some shoe polish or black / dark brown leather stain and a damp sponge. I mean damp not soaking wet. The leather stain I used was water based so it went on easily and I could wipe off the excess from the leather before it stained. Basically your filling in the groves. You could also use acrylic paint but you will need to use a leather sealer to prevent it from running if your shoes should get wet from the spilling of tea!

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress 12-09-09 Shoes DONE!

Very awesome, sounds like something even I could do. :lol

Unless of corse I cut to far into it!

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress 12-09-09 Shoes DONE!

how did you get such detailed ref photos of the shoes? or are these solely [soul-y] based off TB sketches?

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress 12-09-09 Shoes DONE!

I would be very proud of those boots!! I have been searching on Ebay for a similar pair, and I swear you got the only ones out there!! Nice find!

Thanks. From my research I have not been able to find lace up square toed boots. I have found many for women but none for men. I also tried lace up cowboy boots but again only womem fashion.

Google Kenneth Cole and you will find about two different types of lace up, tan/brown, ankle high boots. Better yet just keep those terms in an ArrBay saved search and eventually something will pop up.

Now on to the hat, hatpins, and peacock feather.

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress 12-09-09 Shoes DONE!

Those would be a great base.
Lower the top a bit, add the toe, and you're in business. :thumbsup

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress

Well some new updates and revelations (to me at least!)

Chains ends at the upper left side of the chest and connects to a metal bar. After that it is a linked chain to a circular link with another metal bar. That is than connected to a vinyl looking strap. The circle and bar connection reminds me of the chains you see carried around by punkrockers as their wallet retainer chains. Need to find this.......:angry
MHchain.jpg

Another view. Shows the same connectors and the fact that the spools of thread are NOT under the lapel of the frock coat. Time to move some spools around. Is it me or does that look like a dragonfly on the lapel???
MHchainfront.jpg

Lastly the vinyl looking strap that runs down the back and connects once again to the chain. No good views of how it connects but it is there!

To me that strap looks like a harnes conected to a camera.. It has very similar structure based on the last photo with the dense #### quilting.

Re: My Mad Hatter - Work In Progress 01-05-09 Mojo Turbo Rocks The Bird Patch

Sparrow or a finch. Toucans have much larger beaks.

Behind the scenes costume photos that I cannot reproduce confirms it is chain.
