Re: My Mad Hatter Thread - W.I.P. 03-25-10 Lotsa Updates
So alot of updates!! Some with pictures some without!
1. I ordered ALL my sample buttons! They should be here by next week. I am looking forward to getting all of them ready for the coat!
2. Upon further investigation! The sleeve and back coat buttons....let me just say two words "Thread Buttons!" Yes I have embarked on copying exact from the "hero" costume! Just a bit of background on thread buttons:
"A great variety of buttons were used mainly on men's clothing during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Generally thread and fabric covered buttons were most common on civilian clothing and metal buttons were used on military clothing but button molds (used for making thread and fabric covered buttons) have been found at all military archilogical digs in some cases in great numbers. Some extant garments have metal buttons covered with fabric. The least common of the buttons were horn which were made in small numbers in England and exported."
3. The hat has taken on a new life! With the recommendation of fellow Hatters I have removed all the wire, reblocked the crown, and restitched all the brown string. I also stretched out the circumference of the head band for a better fit and less falling off! I finished creating the leather and ribbon piece that are on the front. The ribbon piece was basically constructed with ribbon, Heat N Bond, and scissors! I frayed the edges of the ribbon as it is on the hero costume.
4. My recent quest for "fobio" ended up in some simplifying my pocket watch. I ended up getting a silver locket that will have my kids pictures. I am using my grandfathers old Seiko pocket watch circa 1930s. A gift from my aunt after my grandfather passed away in the 1970s. I have had this for almost 30 plus years but never had a use for it except NOW!
5. I have started reducing the overall size on the costume pieces. I started off with the ribbon pin for the jacket. When you can't find the same type of safety pin as found on the "hero" costume...make your own. I reduced all the ribbons down to 3/8, 5/8, and 1/2 inch width. I await my special order black and white diamond ribbon spool! Not cheap!!!!
SDCC version! Not SA at all!
New version based upon "hero" costume from El Capitan theater!
6. I have diagrammed the scissor holder, purchased quite a few vintage scissors and started to cut the leather for this costume piece. Should be completed by next week.
7. Coat sent back to "the creator" for refining and adjusting to the hero costume pics.
The TWEAK of death!
