My Lifesize 1:1 Jawa Build - 1st Attempt

Re: My Lifesize Jawa Build - 1st Attempt

Thanks guys...I appreciate the feedback.

Best $7 droid caller I've ever seen. You just keep upping the creativity bar here.

It's funny because there were 2 or 3 other pieces of hardware I was going to add but decided since it's going to be in his hand and mostly covered, and because I want to stay close to my budget, why bother. Maybe next time, I have several other ideas for another one of these!

I love your project. But i think the hood is too large, too overhanging. The rest is awesome.

Yes, I have been looking at that also. I still need to play with the hood some to get it to my liking.

An amazing thread and great insight into how you really can make something jaw dropping for very little money, i love it.
As for the hood, hmm id maybe just tweak it back some, well, i like it oversized anyway.

Thanks!

About to finish this guy up, just need to work on the blaster.

Here is the base coat of brown that I mixed. I know there are some great tutorials out there on how to paint a wood grain pattern, but I won't be getting that detailed. I am using a combination of acrylic, enamel, and spray paint to finish this.

I then put on a scattered second coat of darker, redish brown. I also did a bit of weathering, which is not one of my strong points.

Just a little more and I can call this done.

And here are some final shots with blaster and droid caller in hand. I also did a slight modification to the hood to make it look a bit smaller.

And here is his final display location in my man cave:

There are a few things I could tweak on him, like fraying the cuffs, but I am fine with how this turned out for now. This took me about 5 days to complete. It's not my ideal version, but I think he looks great.

After tallying the receipts, here's about what I spent:

Pipe and Connectors - $8.00
Head - $10.00
Eye Capsules - $1.00
LEDs and Switch - $8.00
Black Duck Tape - $2.00
Head Fabric - $2.00
Robe Fabric - $18.00
Bandoliers / Dye - $37.00
Blaster - $20.00 (which I already had on hand)
Blaster PVC Parts - $19.00
Gloves - $1.00
Hand Hardware - $4.00
For Sale Sign - $3.00
Batting - $5.00
Black Felt - $2.00
Droid Caller - $7.00
Spray Paints - $8.00

I already had the enamel and acrylic paints on hand, so I won't count those. So excluding my time, unless I missed something, this sucker cost me around $155.00!

I think it was a good bargain.

Great work! Just goes to show with a bit of imagination you can build almost anything. Well done!

Thanks for all the positive feedback, this was a fun build and I was glad to share it!

Re: My Lifesize Jawa Build - 1st Attempt

This was amazing to read. What a tremendous guide. Thankfully, it's small, so maybe if I build one, my wife won't notice it!

Re: My Lifesize Jawa Build - 1st Attempt

Fair play that was an awesome little WIP, really enjoyed reading through it. Great job as the final piece looks fantastic. Especially Love the blaster.

Re: My Lifesize Jawa Build - 1st Attempt

Your jawa build looks great, and for the price it even looks better to me. i have been thinking of building my own jawa for some time. nice job

Re: My Lifesize Jawa Build - 1st Attempt

The last thing I wanted to do on this was add sound. I purchased a cheap recordable puck from Build-A-Bear, $8.00, added the Jawa sound, and placed it under the hood. This is just temporary until I can find another solution that sounds better, but won't break the bank. Sound quality isn't the greatest.

Here's a video if you're interested.

Re: My Lifesize Jawa Build - 1st Attempt

I just added sound the other day (I have a Jawa from Tom Spina). I used an old Ipod shuffle. I downloaded the different sound bytes of different jawa sounds (from starwars.com) as individual files and set it to shuffle on a loop. I have some cheap speakers in the hood right now but I want to upgrade to speakers with power (ac/dc, battery, or rechargable battery) so they will be louder. I also want to install the speaker in the head or chest but I my not want to risk screwing up the form.

Good idea! I may look into something like that. I was thinking about mounting the speaker on top of his head, where I have this one, that makes it definitely seem like it's coming from his mouth and is well hidden.

Re: My Lifesize Jawa Build - 1st Attempt

Right now I have a set of two speakers tucked into each side of his neck area. These speakers are bulky and and sort of flower shaped (but it was all I had laying around). The neck area is a decent place becaus I can squish them in there to hold them in place and the hood allows a great hiding place as you do not see the bulk of the speaker. If I can find a set odfsmall but powered (by some power source) speakers, I would prefer those.

Re: My Lifesize Jawa Build - 1st Attempt

LOL! The sounds are great!

I want my own little Jawa now! :D
