My Jack Sparrow Compass Conversion

Well, I have an extra Toy CJS Compass, so I am attempting an overhaul inspired by the lengthy thread I found here.
I went to Michael's and found the clasps I need (Thanks PHArchivist!) and I am going to the hobby store tomorrow to get a pack of styrene strips. as of now I have a couple questions for anyone who has done this...

1) What was your glue of choice to secure things like the styrene trim, or the new sun dial ring some of you fabricated?

2) Did most of you make a new sun dial or has anyone simply modified what is already on the toy? I'm undecided as what to do there.

3) When putting the new clasp on the front, did you use the nails that came with it or did you use small screws? And what do you suggest for the peg that the latch hooks to?

4) What's the best way to pop out the panel from inside the top lid? I can get it to pop out on one side, but I can't get the other side detached and I don't want to force it.

5) Did most of you use the compass rose disc from the toy, or did you print a new one? I was wondering if there is one out there that looks more antique.

I have looked thru and read a lot of the posts so i think I am well on my way. Any additional help is ALWAYS appreciated!

Regular styrene glue sticks wonderfully to the plastic of the compass

Made a new one.

3) When putting the new clasp on the front, did you use the nails that came with it or did you use small screws? And what do you suggest for the peg that the latch hooks to?

Super glue, and the very end of a plastic apitn brush

Dont' recall... :unsure

I think I used the one from the toy

Best of luck! Fun project!

Thanks for the tips!! I got the panel out of the lid, I just had to really be tough with one corner. Thought it might break, but luckily it didn't. Then I can get the leatherette or similar material for it.
Guess when I go to the hobby store, I'll get some extra of a thicker styrene to fabricate a sundial!

PHArchivist - Do you mean like standard model glue or super glue? That's what I was probably going to use.

WOW thanks for the compliment! I really think that is what helped me have the edge at winning the contest that I won. In costume people tell me I look a bit like Depp!
