My 'Inspired By' Power 5 / DL-44 Blaster

First post. Veteran lurker. I've always loved the mauser blasters. My favorite constantly switching from the Merr Sonn Power 5 to BlasTech DL44. The P5 always seemed like the 'dark side' blaster for Han so that always intrigued me. In addition, I always thought the P5 was 'too cool' of a blaster to have been manufactured for the Empire. So, as a symbol of my love for both pistols, I decided to craft my own from an airsoft C96 and see what confusing small gadgets that I can qualify as greeblies.

I was also confronted with the question, does anyone else have any 'inspired by' SW blasters that I'm unaware of? I tried to research before my build endeavor and found nothing. I even studied the Episode 1 Tatooine Blaster for inspiration, which is actually an awesome blaster despite the ever so slightly small handle. I'd love to find a subculture of space swine making their own blasters just to see what's out there. Anyway, let me know what you think!

The beginning. The actual pistol I picked up at a comic book store that sells old toys and army guns, as well as vintage figures, etc. At first I wanted to build my own 'dollar store' version of Han's ESB DL44, but that failed miserably. So I decided to make my own.

Due to time constraints and work, I dont have any mid-work pics, just the end result.
The 'lighting' section of Lowe's is probably the best place to look for greeblies.
Used spray paint primer and gloss black.
Glued some parts with E6000, but mostly everything is screwed together.
I tried to make most things connect and look purposeful instead of pulling pieces off of a model car or something (i.e. the notorious half pistons)
The flash hider is totally a light bulb socket adapter and the wires to ground it.
The two tubes on top are wire protectors, a huge pack at the hardware store for $2.50.
I never ended up doing anything with the light switches as seen in the original picture.
It's a very sloppy version but I like that quality of it. Kind of like a 'beater' version of a guitar. More soul.
Still can't decide on whether I should make a holster or buy one made for the Power 5.

Damn, that's an awesome looking custom blaster you made there! It's got a real mean look to it, almost giving it the impression of a "snub-nosed" DL-44.

Updated photos of the weathering and new holster. Not over the top or anything; just took fingernail polish remover and made some of the silver parts shine thru a little bit. The holster I got from eBay. The seller makes them for DL-44s and Power 5s so I was in luck.

Also, here's the Episode 1 Tatooine Blaster that I bought off eBay for $7 way back when. I ripped the color scheme off of Rey's NN-14 Blaster and added the same 'flash hider' as my other blaster.
Cut the original barrel off.
Painted the handle black, then taped it off to primer the rest of the gun and paint it silver.
Weathered with black paint.
Bolted on the flash hider.

Since you asked, here's my Merr-Sonn build thread (sadly in need of updating). It's "conjectural" in the sense that no "Hero" version of the blasters was made. I like your approach as sort of... *thinks* ...It's like someone "liberated" an Imperial Model 44 (the snub-nosed version) and worked on it in their workshop to boost the power while still keeping the size down. If having specific design cues matters to you at all, a lot of the Merr-Sonn and BlasTech bits can be found on Shapeways for not a lot. Nice if you want to put heat-sink grilles on anywhere.

As far as other "inspired by" designs, I also have this thing I've been fiddling with from time to time.

Thanks! Your input saturates my happiness. Your builds are great, of course. I really dig the Westar, but of course your Merr Sonn has my heart (are there any finished photos that I'm just overlooking? I wanna know!) Shapeways has been on my radar for a while, but I've never made the plunge to actually purchase anything. Buying online usually doesn't cooperate with my desire for instant gratification. Design cues are mattering more and more to me as I grow with my building abilities. I've also been tinkering with dollar store blasters and even managed to come across a cheap Chinese version of the Blade Runner PDK that I hope to eventually convert. If a SW blaster looks like it's been illegally modified, it gets me hype.

Ii think it's badass!

ScottD has a custom Dl44ish somewhere around here too. I'm itching to try a blaster-- but I don't see the fun in kits that I'm just sanding and painting, and the scavenger hunt for legit parts to match everyone else... there's a reason I'm mostly into custom sabers.

I wouldn't mind a custom blaster thread to see more of this sort of thing. Blasters that are original, but based on the Star Wars aesthetic and building style.

Yes! Repros are great, but custom stuff is too interesting to ignore. If we had a custom blaster thread somewhere then I would be in RPF coma.

Thanks for the love! Your lightsaber builds are impressive to say the least!

Let's see... In addition to the "inspired-by" blasters I mentioned above, I also have some faithful and anally accurate (or better) things like Vader's lightsaber, a DDC Defender, an E-11, an SE-14R, ESB and ROTJ EE-3's, long and short DC-15's, DLT-19, T-21, Scout Trooper holdout blaster... In the "inspired-by" camp, I also have an E-11 carbine in the works, and am planning for a left-hand/mirrored Scout blaster. I'm also doing my "movie-style" interpretation of Fordo's blaster pistols. (Plus several others I don't feel like typing out right now...)

But then I have my customs. ;) My own bowcaster, a half-dozen or so blasters, and my lightsaber. So I hear ya on that. :D
