Re: Ghosterbusters costume for under $300.00 Possible? started work on proton gun.

Ok so I didn't like the gun that much so I tried a different approach.
I had recently (yesterday) taken the speaker out of an old small speaker from a surround sound kit. The casing that I was left with looked like it might be of some use so I kept it, little did I realise I would be using it so soon.

My son has said he wants to be a Ghostbuster this halloween aswell, so I will keep the first one and if he still wants at halloween he can use it.

I love how you can see how to use bits of other things to create new things. Looking great!

Thanks, sometimes it can drive me and the wife nuts though, I am always looking at things before we throw them out. But I guess I am doing my part to safe the planet I do recycle a lot of things.

Looking great so far, good luck with the rest of your build.

Seeing this thread reminds me of my budget Ghostbuster build last year. One sunday my wife thought I'd gone into the kitchen to start preparing dinner, a few hours later she got intrigued by the noises and came in to see this mess...

Needless to say, she went hungry for a little while longer :lol .

Re: Ghosterbusters costume for under $300.00 Possible? started work on proton gun.

Started adding the lights, had to use a little bit of wood on the gun to give me something solid to put the switches. Not all the lights are in place yet but here is a vid so far.

Re: Ghosterbusters costume for under $300.00 Possible? started work on proton gun.

SO I just ordered a sound board from a member on the GBfans site. The only problem is the sounds would all come from one speaker, and I dont want the sound effects of the gun coming from the proton pack, so I asked the seller if he knew of a way to get the sound coming from two seperate speakers. he said I would have to buy two sound boards, but there is not room for one in the gun part so that would not work.
I havent recieved the sound board yet, but I have been trying to figure out how to have the sounds coming from seperate speaker, I PMed Crix and he said I would have to order two, unfortunately I can not afford that. So I have been playing around with this idea, I can not test it until I get the sound board, but the theory is correct. I think.

ANy ideas if this will work?.

Re: Ghosterbusters costume for under $300.00 Possible? started work on proton gun.

I think you'll need two switches. One to trigger the sounds and one to switch between the speakers. Depending on how the board works, you'll probably need a momentary switch to trigger the sound board and a toggle switch to change between speakers. It can be done.

Ok so I pinted the proton pack tonight, I applied silver paint first then once that was dry I did the toothpaste trick, then painted the whole thing black, after a few coats and once it was totaly dry I removed the toothpaste. It is the first time i have tried the toothpaste trick on foam and it worked pretty well I think.
Let me know what you think.

Looks good! This pack certainly doesn't look like it was done on a tight budget! :):thumbsup

I've not used this toothpaste method (as I just cheat and use rub-n-buff with a makeup sponge to touch-up the edges and make them LOOK like the paint is scratched). You're method gives you a nice 'curled edge' look to the paint... I might try that on projects that need to be more detailed.

Re: Ghosterbusters costume for under $300.00 Possible? started work on proton gun.

Wow, this is simply spectacular. Very, very well done!

Re: Ghosterbusters costume for under $300.00 Possible? started work on proton gun.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the kind words.
The toothpast trick worked really well, like I said it is the first time I tried it on foam. I got the tip when building my clonetrooper armor, a lot of builders use it. I find it really helps give it the "Look" Especialy when using it on ABS armor. some people use it when doing multiple colours, spray colour of metal, add some toothpaste spray rust colour or something, add more toothpaste to the same areas and a few different areas then spray finaly colour. Once dry rub off the toothpaste and you have multiple levels of dmage and scratches.

Re: Ghosterbusters costume for under $300.00 Possible? started work on proton gun.

Oh and so far the cost of the build has been..
Foam sheets 4 2x2 ft squares for $10.00 I have used 2 squares so $5 of foam.
Wood was laying around so FREE
Alice frame $30
Hot glue $5
Tubes came from a kids broken hockey net, FREE
Old sports drink bottle FREE
3 bolts with nuts (found laying in tool box) FREE
Paint had some left over I havent had to buy any cans for this build so technicly FREE
The lights were a gift from my wife she spent $150.00 on them. So for me they were FREE
The hoses and wires I had to ordered they will be coming in the mail this week hopefully they cost $50.00 for the set. So in total so far.
$90 for the proton pack.

Re: Ghosterbusters costume for under $300.00 Possible? started work on proton gun.

I can't get over how awesome this is turning out. Really inspires me to give the proton pack another go.

Re: Ghosterbusters costume for under $300.00 Possible? started work on proton gun.

Getting better all the time! Great Thread.

Re: Ghosterbusters costume for under $300.00 Possible? started work on proton gun.

Re: Ghosterbusters costume for under $300.00 Possible? started work on proton gun.

oooo A fett back pack, Now thats an idea!!..
Thanks guys I appreciate the suport in this build. I havent done anymore yet I am waiting for some tubes to come in the mail. I also managed to pick up a proper housing piece for the gun in the Pay it Forward Thread.

Re: Ghosterbusters costume for under $300.00 Possible? started work on proton gun.

I know you're looking into having a separate speaker for wand charge and firing sound but I would recommend it coming from the pack. I think you'd struggle finding a small enough speaker that can deliver the bass that those sound effects deserve. I got a car speaker in my pack and it's plenty loud and bassy and in busy environments like conventions and parties, you'd want it to be loud. I think it's the overall illusion of the sound effects and the lights working together that sells it to the public, not where the sound is coming from :) just my opinion pal
