My GROOT wip

Back texture completed. That spot that isn't done is so I can glue another bark piece there.

Left arm is coming along as well.

Hope to have the whole top part done on the weekend since it's Thanksgiving here in Canada. Then back to glueing piping on the legs (I'm actually sick of that part of the project now... I've had enough hot glue burn blisters to last the year!)

Still looking good. I know the pain of the hot glue blister, I have a large one on the webbing between my thumb and index fingers from clamping some foam by hand yesterday when it bubbled out the side.

it looks really good! I like that you're using the foam tubes as root type covering rather than just using foam pieces. So many people just end up with foam armor rather than a Groot costume. But yours is really awesome! Are the feet stable btw? it seems hard to walk around like that, but I guess if you get used to it then you're good.

Walking is not bad.... could use a tad more ankle support.

Hit a snag... The tissue idea didn't work as well I was hoping. My test pieces worked great... But it began pealing off the actual suit...

Two options. Redo the tissue but use latex cocking instead of glue. Or carve the foam with the dremel like the bark pieces.

What kind of glue did you use to adhere the tissue?

Also? It's "caulking."

Don't want you getting something you weren't expecting. ;)

Caulking. Stupid iPhone autocorrect :)

It was just white glue. test pieces worked great. may not have put enough glue the second time around....

I can't imagine the white glue gripping the gloss-like texture of the pipe insulation very well. What I'm using is Super 77 spray adhesive. Give it (preferable both sides) a spray, wait at least a minute, bond sides, boom.

I'll give that a shot. Thanks.

Picked up the Super 77 adhesive and did a couple of tubes to try it out.

Once it was good and dry I try the paint just to make sure there would be no more pealing.

I'll give this all a good 12 hours of drying and will test all of it. Hope this works better than the last test :)

I love your progress. Everything is coming together great.
With spray glues they work best if you spray to the contact area, and the thing you want to stick. Wait until they are both tacky/dry. then put them together.
Have you tried looking out of the mouth? the neck seems a bit short when you wore it all.

Good luck with the spray adhesive. The only downside I've experienced is that, although it sticks really well, that can be its downfall, too. The foam pipe is flexible while the tissue paper is not. So while the paper doesn't peel up, when over-extended, it may crack a little. I don't know what kind of paint you're using, but I plan on using a latex based paint myself to help bind everything together and prevent cracking.

Looking great, though!

Totally saw this on my build as well. Going use the mouths slit as an opening to see through. This will elevate the mask to give the body more neck

Just wanted to say that your groot is coming out fantastic! It helped inspire me to build my own as well! Thank you for all your pictures and trial and errors! Looks awesome man keep it up!

I use a thinned down acrylic paint. I've used it on costume for my kids and painting pics on tshirts with no cracking...

Nice. Yeah, come to think of it, acrylic paint is added latex as pigment, and both are thinned with water. So I may use a thinned latex/acrylic to get a nice, stretchy base.

Are you priming it with anything before you paint it? Or are you applying the spray adhesive, letting it dry, then painting it with acrylics with no primer?

I'm using the adhesive to glue down crumpled up tissue paper. The tissue is black so that is acting as my primer. I'm just painting directly on it.

I've taken a couple days off from Groot to help my kids get ready for their school Halloween dance. Since I will need a handler for Groot who better then my son as Star Lord to help :)

Jacket was found at Salvation Army store. Shirt and pants (not pictured) from Value Village. For the mask I started with the nerf toy to speed up the project.
