My first model: Stargate Atlantis' Daedalus

Well, I recently decided that I was too fed up with making costumes, so I decided to try model building. I started this afternoon, and I'm liking it :)

I decided to start with a model of the Daedalus from Stargate Atlantis. I'm working up from a frame. The frame so far is built from yard sticks, with popcicle sticks occasionally stuck in.

Tonight I hope to finish the frame, and then start on covering. It will be covered with foam-core board.

All opinions and advice are requested and welcome :)

Me thinks somebody got a great deal on rulers at staples :D

seriously though it looks cool. What did you use to hold the ruler pieces together?

Hell of a way to break yourself into this model thing, ain't it? :D

Heck yeah. :lol

I finished the framing for the nose:

The 'wings' I plan on making from foam core by itself. Right now it's close to 35" long.

Technically they're yard sticks from Lowe's.

It's all hot glue holding it together.

I don't remember the nose being that BIG. I remember it was shaped similarly but I think you need to scale it back some. It looks good though, and I'd have never thought to use yardsticks as a construction source.

Yep, I do think I need to change the nose a good bit. I think I know a way to do it.

EDIT: I spent a little bit of time on it. Here's the reduced nose:

I also started adding the foam core. Here's a shot of the engine arrangment so far:

Next I'll start covering the engine/hangers, then the nose. Then I plan on filling between the pieces with Bondo.

I spent the afternoon working with the foam core. I managed to get about 1/2 the surface done.

Soon I hope to bet some bondo and get to work on the edges. Then I move on to the bridge area and the wings.

Looking good so far. Its amazing what can built with common house hold items. Its nice to to be reminded that not everything needs to be built with resin, acrylic and styrene.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I've made a few changes, but don't have pictures just yet. The major thing that I did was that I removed the engine/hangers from the main body, and made an undercarraige for them. I also threw out the two long engines, and am going to replace them with something of a larger diameter.

You know....the fun part about this technique is that you can also make whatever suits your fancy, whether it be seen on screen or something from your own imagination.

This is way cool. Can't wait to see more.

Well, I've gotten a lot done. Been doing a lot of Bondo work. And I finished adding all the foam core, the wings and the bridge section.

Still looking for larger main engines, and I have a lot of work to do with the bondo.

Well, it's been finished for about a week, but our camera has been out for repairs. Here are some pics of it, fully painted and hung:
