MY current project-Need some help

Ok...first off I'll admit I am a nugget. So if this post is in the wrong forum, please move me to where I need to be.....

So anyway... Here is my current project:

I am a school teacher in Wisconsin... and a huge VW fan and BSG fan. Have owned air-cooled VW's off and on my whole life... Currently I own 2 dunebuggies and a 1970 VW beetle. I am also now working on a new project based on a VW Bus chassis. You can see part of the project here.

Project Boonie

The project is the Boonie Bug based on a 1970 Popular Mechanics design (and coincidentally featured in the movie Total Recall as a background vehicle). I am modifying the design of the vehicle quite a bit to my own liking.

Giving it more of a BSG original LandRam look... with wheels instead of tracks.... :lol:lol

So anyway.... ( I get carried away):cool

I am hoping to deck the interior of the vehicle out in things that remind me of nuBSG. I would really like to do the dash along the lines of the Mk II viper cockpit and add other touches. I have seen listed among the auction items for Propworx - the BSG Props Mark II Viper Cockpit Blueprints. Anyone in the group have images of these? Detailed pics or the like?

I have several closeups/screen caps from the show but think that these layouts would be great references.

Also you can kinda see where my imagination is taking me.... got any ideas? What do you think? I am a newb (as previously stated) but I do love to tinker and learn... so I don't mind jumping into things....

Let me know what you think... look forward to your input....

Ok....maybe this just isn't anyone's cup of tea.... I'll post a few more updates and if nothing comes up then I get a mod to delete it....

Patience Young Grasshopper.
It's Sunday and most people aren't on during the week ends.;)

Cool concept, much better design than the original in the magazine.

Thanks 6....

Appreciate the input....and yes...I should have more patience..... hahahaha
Forgot that Sunda was for football... not new projects :p

I did spend some time this afternoon removing the remainder of the crapped out VW bus body.... 3 sawzall blades later and we are down to the basic chassis plus original front dash.... Using the original dash to take measurements off for the replacement dash... mocking it up in Blender with my 3D model... and will start on basic foam concept hopefully later this week....

awesome project, I love it.

But wouldn't a raptor interior be more suitable for this? I can imagine a carputer right in the center console, touchscreen and all. You could also have on board vehicle diagnostic on another screen; but I guess that's kinda useless if you dun have an OBDII system.

sounds like an exciting project though! Wish I was working on it, hehe.

Epi....

I am thinking of taking perhaps a Automotive DVD player... gut it and mount the screen in the forward Dradis position... finding or creating a dradis video loop that can play onboard from a DVD... Switch DVD switch display...or use it too to play movies etc on the road for the "onboard crew" :)

Other things I thought of were mounting rear and forward view cameras that could be added to the displays.

I say Viper MKII because in the images I have seen online...

It has a feel of "Old school" avionics and digital displays with a healthy dose of buttons and knobs :p

I have had a artificial horizon given to me along with several other aircraft instruments... so I thought I would work those in....

I love the raptor....I mean LOVE them... but haven't enough reference images of the cockpit to set it up....

Would love to get a pic or two of those Propworx cockpit layouts...

are you sure we aren't related? BSG check. Geocaching check. Love of all old school buttons, knobs, switches, gizmos, and red danger buttons. check.

hmmmm.... but I see where you're going with it, and I like it. perhaps a hybrid of the two?

Hahahaha...... too funny Squirl!

I got my TA-1 field phone in today... another piece to the puzzle. i also talked tot eh maintenance staff at our school where I teach. He is going to put a vacuform table together for me...and I might be getting a old stove from our FACE program. Once I get that I can vacuform a base for my phone and look at a few other pieces to mock up....

It's a slow process.... but I'll keep you and everyone updatred as it goes.....

:)

you do know that you're going to have to build that damned computer case now right? looking forward to the updates :thumbsup

The one for the deck computer? The trs80 Model 100? I have already started mocking it up a little in foam....then I figure I will cover that in clay and vacuform it from there... will have a lot of research and reading to do on vacuforming before we get to that point....

:)

I really love what your doing here. I wish I had something more useful for you other than
encouragement!

I do have a DRADIS display screensaver I found a few year back (that i still use because I LOVE it!) It's a fairly simple one, but it really looks the part. I'm pretty sure there'd be a piece of software that could convert it somehow so you could rip it onto a DVD.

Good luck!

Pete...

Thanks for the reply. Let me know which it is and I'll let you know if I have it or not.... Thanks man!

The one I have was made a while ago and was posted eveywhere, you can still find it through google with DRADIS screensaver. It's prob the one you have.

However, here is a less common one that believe has the 3D sweeping Dradis animated, not just the 2D one like I have. Alas it's written for a Mac in .qtz format and I haven't figured out how to open it on a PC

BSG Dradis for Mac

I have no idea if you'll be able to use this, but it's the only 3D DRADIS I've come across. Maybe a MAC user could open it up then convert it into something a bit more PC friendly? I've not coma across a .qtz file before, I'm not sure how it works!

Pete...

Absolutely... that QTZ is used for screensavers on Mac and it is a specialized format. It can be opened easily in Quicktime to be viewed... but you have to have Quicktime Pro to save the file in another format. If it was saved as a AVI, or even as a MOV that would be something I could work with....

Anyone have QT Pro? Send me a PM... let's get this sucker converted :p

Thanks again Pete!

Love the idea!
I drove a '71 VW bus "years" ago, had a Ninja Turtles scene spray bombed on the sides!
Cowabunga dude!

Oh, pshaw, 'twern't nothin.

Just some pics I had sitting around.

I like the shape of your green ... model. Hope it turns out real nice :)

Warpig was kind enough to convert the QTZ file and i recieved it this afternoon. thank you my friend....

However... after looking at it, I was not happy with it...it was rather pixelized... and had a few issues... So I decided to jump in and do a version for myself and see if I could create it myself. Now, I will have the Dradis layup, which I can work into whatever size format I wish... I will also be able to customize the colors to suit as well.... Still more to go... but here we are so far....

Input is always appreciated...
