MR Falcon Cockpit damage?

OK, now that I know that my paint job on the Falcon was similiar to all of the others I unpacked it and set it up. I noticed on the side of the cockpit that it looks like it has been filled in between the plates and then sanded? And then under that is some kind of damage too?
I have included a picture to show you. I have looked at a bunch of pics and can't seem to find any from this point of view on the cockpit.
Is this part of the "damage/weathering" scheme or actual damage? If anyone can check out theirs or post pics of that side of the cockpit that would be great!
Thanks for all of your help!

OUCH! Have you called MR? I would not be happy paying what you did and not getting a perfect edition. I had the same issues with the compulsion gallery when I bought my Vader, the helmet was on crooked. But after contacting them, the paid for shipping back to France and then sent me another statue shipped free of charge. That is customer service! (the shipping loss to France and back alone was over $300!)

Or perhaps MR's new Motto is

"MR, Where quality is just a word we like to use!"

At any rate, I feel for you. Get it replaced!

thomas;)

Oh no, that does look damaged then touched up. Hope you get it replaced. Where did you buy it?

My god thats awful, and whats with the touched up paint?..is it paint, or plaster, looks bloody terrible, agreed get a replacement for what you paid for her...that should never have been sold at retail, MR tightwads :angry

Thats not acceptable and can't believe it passed quality control.

I had similar problem in various places, especially along the cockpit side, you could actually see fingerprints in the crappy putty work, I returned it without any problem, it turned out in my favor at the end as I got lower # and a much more accurate paintjob as the first one was way too dark and overdone airbrushing

Man, thats what I thought!
I just got it from redfordfilms.com and emailed them with the same pics I posted here. Hopefully they have some left to replace it with!
Thanks ,Tom

Just fill it, primer it, primer the rest of the beast, and repaint the whole damn model.

Hope you get a better replacement. Did it have the factory seal tape when you received it?

Yes, it had all of the factory tape in place as far as I could tell. In all the excitement of opening it tho, maybe it was just regular tape?! :)

Yep, I thought of that too? I'm not sure that redfordfilms has any to replace it with!
But I have zero skills when it comes to that sort of thing, I wouldn't know where to begin to repair it myself. I'd only make it worse!

Eegah, im sure you could do it buddy, hell the guys here could take you through it step by step, maybe not a full repaint....as thats for the insanely brave like Andrew (gunpowder) but certainly the cockpit area?

Whatever happens, and whatever you decide, i hope it all works out for you, id still love one of these things, but man i lack the space, she's a big girl!

We can coach you... There's an out-of-the-bottle Model Master brand paint that's a dead ringer for the base color.

Really?!
So would I just sand down the damaged area and repaint? Would I have to repaint the entire cockpit or just the area that I sand?
Thanks so much for your help!

Yeah... I'd fill the gouge in the smaller orange box with an easy-to-apply and easy-to-sand filler (Personally, I suggest Elmer's wood filler - cheap, water-soluable so you can smooth it on, sands with 220 grit if not applied too heavy).

Paint over the area in the bigger orange box with the base color. May even be able to brush it on if you use thinned coats, but you can mask the boxed area and airbrush it too. If you airbrush, you might consider masking the top, left and right edges of the boxed area, and allow the paint to fade out on the bottom to blend better.

Get some black pastel chalk and apply artistically and you're done!

If you go with Magisculp, you could pretty much eradicate any need for major sanding IMO.
Wet paste it in, and smooth out with a finger, and finally a small wet paint brush, once cured, you literally have to breath off the surface texture, it would help in this tricky area buddy, this is a trick i always use when i dont want to go nuts with the sanding sticks!

To smooth out some of the "grit" in the raised panels, try very fine wire wool, its so finite in its action, itll smooth her out great again, without any need to harsh sanding!

If you really want to go to town, clean out some of the crud between the panels (below Rob's orange edit) with a very small ballcutter in a dremel, ive done this before and it really does work, just takes a steady hand and patience!

Id fully agree with airbrushing the area, and fading it back in, once any weathering with pastels etc are carried out, you wont even notice!

And fix that damn "=" sign while you're at it! it should be level! :angry ;)

Lee, I'll have to try Magic Sculpt. Sounds ideal.
