MR Assualt Phaser Delivered!

How much does Rod.com have to pay to license that piece?

...I don't think anything, as part of a deal that was made with Gene R. If they did, I'd bet pricing would be higher.

I don't know if Rod.com get a special deal for licensing but at least the kit is made in the U.S.A.

The instructions for the kit also tell you to remove the seam - shame MR didn't follow suit...

I don't believe they get any special deal. I seem to recall their stuff being much cheaper until Viacom shut them down and said they need to pay a licensing fee.

Personally I think their stuff is a bit pricey for simple resin kits (even if they are high quality) but then again I do understand that they are paying for the license.

The only deal I know of Gene Roddenberry made with Paramount over future licensing was that they couldn't ask for anything for any technology that was made real from Star Trek. That is you could make a real dermal regenerator tomorrow that actually heals human skin and call it a dermal regenerator. Paramount/ Viacom/ CBS get nothing from it.

Since most of you have your assualt phasers already
can somebody put one on a scale and weigh the dam thing already.
Since this was the big complaint before the paint job complaint.

I don't have a precision scale, but when I weigh it on our bathroom scale, it comes out at 1.6 pounds and to me, it feels about the same weight as my MR TOS Phaser. I think it feels very nice and well balanced when you hold it.

For those of you having the problem about how the P1 rattles around inside the Phaser, I've found that it is actually supposed to snap on to the top of the magazine. If you take the mag out and try it, you will find that it holds very nicely. It is a bit tricky to get it to snap into place inside the Phaser, but it can be done and once it is, it does not move around at all. You do have to un-snap it before removing the mag.

As for the Rod.com kit, I would love to buy it, but I have a couple of issues with it.

1) It is a kit - I can't build a kit to save my life, so that means I would have to contract it out or wait until Rod.com offers it in a built version, which means it might cost 2 or 3 times as much.

2) As far as I know, there are no electronics available for it yet. I'm sure that at some point, Rod.com will make some available, but that means you would have to wait until they are available before you can get the Phaser built.

I will say this, if Rodd.com ever does offer it already built with electronics, I will buy it in a second, but until they do, I'm going to have to go with the MR. I've wanted one of these ever since I first saw STV and I'm not waiting any longer.

Jeyl, thanks for making the video and AndySertin, thanks for posting it.

I would like to address a couple of his complaints.

1) The bottom plate on the mag is not correct. Winston posted pictures of a couple of screen used phasers and one of them had the exact same bottom plate, so it is correct to one of the screen used phasers.

2) The P1 is loose inside the phaser. This is because it is supposed to snap into place on the top of the mag and once you do that, it holds it in very tightly. It is tricky to do, so you should try doing it with the mag out of the phaser first, so that you see how it is done and then do it with the mag in the phaser.

Other than that, I think it is a great video, even though I don't agree with everything he said.

On the other side of that,he also did not center on the bad paint job on these as well the construction and seems on the piece.
He did not go over the display either although that should be secondary to the piece itself.
I think the review was a fair piece, certainly with the video you get to see and hear what you are getting. Nice review, have to agree with the judgment on it.

Looking forward to the better constructed, nicer finish and electronics of the 40 dollar Art Asylum piece down the road.

Well without wanting to sound like a stuck LP, I really do think now is the time MR advertised their products as finished what you see is what you get pieces on their site, before they go on sale.
Time and time again we've seen changes from proto to production, making collectors order on the face of the proto, which in this case is clearly different from the production piece.

And how about this MR.
If a fan can post a youtube review of the product, what's stopping you doing the same of the actual production product before it goes on sale?
Might save you a hellava lot of jammed phones lines at your CS centre.

Well... the action on the slide seems solid, seems to have a bit of a kick as well. The sound effect when the clip locks in is nice. I wonder about metal fatigue(sp?) from the slide slapping back & forth. Looks like I be making a replacment P1. Honestly they could have added a few nice touches on that. Any body out there got one of those kits Wakal made a while back...how hard could a detailed P1 be, although I like how the did the lighting effect on it. They could have made the p1 lock in a little better, if at all. It's practically flying out when you advance the slide.

Mine is sitting at home in it's sealed box still - didn't have time to open it last night but I will today when I get home and try and get some pictures. I know it's # 97. I ordered direct from MR and it cost about $400 with the CS discount. I am hoping the "cool" factor with lights and sounds helps a lot and I'm hoping the finish isn't too bad. Being a huge Trek fan and collector I am hoping I don't have to return it. Keep in mind there are a lot of comments in this thread based on just a few that have been seen. I'll wait until it's in my own hands and decide what I think.

Pete,

On mine, the P1 does lock into the top of the magazine, so that when you open and close the slide, it stays in place. It is hard to get the P1 to snap into place, so I took the mag out and tried it a few times before trying it again with the mag in place. Once it is snapped into place, it holds nicely.

As the P1 is a "fantasy piece" you can make it look however you like. MR obviously did.

It's shape is identical to Wakals minus the surface detail. If it's a "fantasy piece" that shape has got to be coming from somewhere.

Good to know it locks in better than the vid shows.

Not happy that the magazine will get worn going in and out.

Maybe some teflon put in strategic areas will help this problem?
To keep plastic on plastic contact from happening.

I keep thinking, modifying this beast is going to be necessary.

:confused

So, I have heard both sides on this P1......that it was made and never shown in the movie, which I suppose makes it 50% fantasy. OR, was it some proping afterthought?

I received a PM over at the RS Forum from Jeyl and he asked If anyone has any inputs or thoughts that they would like to see updated into his video post it here. (can't post on the RPF, registration down)
Yes, it would be nice to see how the P1 attaches to the magazine, so that we can actually see that it can be locked down.

Could you ask him about the bottom plate. In the video he mentions that the bottom plate has NCC-1701 even though the originals have NCC-1701A. Winston posted pics of a couple of screen used pieces and one of them has the exact same bottom plate as MR used.

Thanks,
Tony

Guys, I've got mine unpacked now and I have to say it's pretty darn cool! After a quick inspection my opinion:

- The weight is fine to me. It's heavier than people are describing IMHO.
- Mine has a little of the "haze" on it and I think it's intentional. I kind of like it. Too clean of a black finish wouldn't be as weapon looking I think. Not sure the exact color of the real prop.
- Fit and finish isn't too bad. Could of been a bit cleaner and tighter, but again not too bad.
- The sounds and light effects are nice. Love the sound when you start it and put the clip in.

Overall I'm pretty happy and will be keeping it. I'll get some pics up soon.

Ok, here are my very quick pics. I'll probably take some more this coming weekend. Again, if you are a fan and have this on order I would wait and see what you think when you get it in your own hands. I think it's pretty nice considering everything that functions and works on it. I'm satisfied! :)
