MR Assualt Phaser Delivered!

When they actually work, and can vaporize something.
Then I won't care about how much it weighs. :lol

I wonder if it comes apart easily?

Lead weights could go a long way to adding some heft.

How long before Art Asylum makes one for $40 and all you'll have to do is cut off plastic emitter and buy a fan-made aluminum one?

Yup, whole thing was supposed to be Zymac with some die cast and ABS parts. Go to the MR site and unless I'm mistaken the discription has changed from when pre order started on these.

High quality machined and die-cast metal and injection molded ABS construction

Don't they call that the old bait and switch :eek:angry:confused
Maybe in the future some can copy and save the description of a new MR prop
so we all know for sure how much they change it from the original description
to see how much it changes when it finally gets released.

Word. :thumbsup

Let's hope Art Asylum does make the assault phaser!

Exactly what I noted. There is no way to justify the cost on the MR piece.

From the email originally sent back in January:

Assault Phaser
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Star Trek VI: Undiscovered Country

• Limited to 1,500 pieces worldwide
• Removable Phaser I
• Removable magazine
• High quality machined and die-cast metal and injection molded ABS construction
• Made from a digital scan of an original prop seen on-screen
• Digital sound effects from the original sound files
• Authentic LED light effects
• Includes display base with acrylic cover, Prop Story and Certificate of Authenticity

Looks to me like nothing changed (unless it wsa prior to this email). It is diecast and it is ABS. Just not as much diecast and people were hoping for.

I always say "It's all about language" and it's sleazy. Greasy hair car salesman sleazy!

"High quality machined and die-cast metal and injection molded ABS construction "

Technically I suppose their claim is correct but there is an implication being made here by emphisizing one ("High quality machined and die-cast metal") before the other ("and injection molded ABS construction")

They know this. Their marketing people are well aware of it when they set the sales pitch to type.

The description should read. "injection molded ABS construction with high quality machine and die cast metal" Period. No excuse Don't con your customers, Loyal customers I might add.

This is just wrong and indefencible. Since no actual product existed for review when they took my pre-order their description should have portrayed as accurately as possible the compisition of the product.

After this I'm done with MR. They owe us an explanation.

We've not paid for cheap plastic toys!

Pete, you hit the nail on the head. Because of the high price tag, I held out until I saw the final product though I really wanted this. Now I'm glad I didn't order one. I'll stick to my static resin/metal version. It so much more satisfying.
MR: VERY misleading. :thumbsdown

I was going to get one of these origanaly but backed out. I figured they would Hi-Ball the cost and Lo-Ball the construction. I am kind of sad to see my assumption was correct. I have the MR TOS stuff and really like the phaser. I agree that the heft although maybe not technically correct really helps to sell the piece as real.

I read in another review that the P1 attaches to the top of the magazine, so you have to remove the P1 before taking out the mag. Still can't understand why MR chose to make this with the P1?????

Damn this is disappointing. I am not sure if I want this now or not. MR is just not worth the trouble or money anymore.

I don't know about U.S. laws, but when a description of a product's components are listed in the U.K, the material which makes up the majority of the product percentage wise, MUST be listed first.

I'm still looking forwards to getting mine - although it'll probably be off eBay some time down the line.

And yeah - if AA produce one then I'm all over it and Russ'll do the metal parts.

(Hi all...lots of old friends in this thread!)

I received my phaser Friday and am having the same disappointments that everyone else is having. In addition, I feel the display case is too small (compared to the TOS phaser) in that it crowds the phaser some. The hollow phaser I was a surprise, and the battery compartment on mine doesn't allow the batteries to make good contact. But yes, I would've really liked more heft to it.

My question to the phaser gods:
Is this assault phaser painted accurately?

I was expecting a "new" gloss or semi-gloss black finish...Federation issue...but this is semi-flat or flat and looks like it needs about 4 more coats to completely cover it...were my expectations inaccurate? Or did I get a dud?

Thanks,
cdw

Well, mine will show up tomorrow, we'll see. I've never returned a product to MR over dissatisfaction, maybe this will be the first.

Also note, the pre-order e-mail,

Limited to 1,500 pieces worldwide

The MR site now,

Limited to 2,000 pieces worldwide

Here’s a link to Figures.com showing the finish on the piece they were showing at Toy Fair.

Not close to what your describing. Like the photo, the one I saw on hand at Toy Fair had a great semi-gloss finish.

I think MR really went cheap on the paint job. They didn’t even bother to paint the piece under the sliding cowl the correct color. Also the details look a little soft compared to pictures I have seen of the real deal but I suppose that could be due to the crappy paint job or lighting/camera resolution. Here is a pic comparing the proto with the production piece:
